forestry: Water Quality on Forest Lands, Best Management Practices - 10/03/14 02:49 AM
Water Quality on Forest Lands, Best Management Practices
We do a lot of Audit work at Woodland Management Service, generally for Investment groups and stock holders of corporate lands.
This month my son Nick is doing a different kind of audit, he is leading a team of multidisciplinary professionals who are auditing some State and County lands for Water Quality BMP's or Best Management Practices.
BMP's are important in that they help us to manage our forests in a way that will have a positive impact on the forest as well as the soils and waterways that inhibit the forest.

forestry: Cruising Through the Woods, Good Traction is Important - 09/24/14 05:20 AM
Cruising Through the Woods, Good Traction is Important.
When cruising through the woods it is important to have Great Traction, smooth wimpy boots will not do.
With good traction you can concentrate on the compass point in front of you and ignore whatever you are stepping on, because your boots will handle it and keep you from slipping, tripping, or breaking an ankle.
One day when I was working for the Forest Service I saw how important a good pair of boots was when I left my good boots back in town and had to wear my cowboy boots out to … (8 comments)

forestry: Diameter Breast Height (DBH), Why is this so important? - 09/22/14 11:25 AM
Diameter Breast Height (DBH), Why is this so important?

No this is not a new measurement that the ladies are using.

Rather it is an old measurement that every Forester is intimately familiar with.

Every Forester knows where Breast Height is on their body even though it is seldom where the forester's Breasts are actually located; on some it is as low as their navel, and others it it closer to their chin.

It is a critical measure in our need to have consistent measurements while measuring tree volumes.

We all know that Diameter Breast Height … (13 comments)

Chippewa County Wisconsin Wildlife and Forests
Chippewa County is the home of our first office at Woodland Management Service just north of Cadott.
This office was opened in 1988 and is now run by our Wildlife Specialist Jesse Kulesa and one of our lead Foresters Nick Crane.
Our clients at Woodland Management Service own a lot of forest land in this county and they are quite happy with the bountiful wildlife here.
Chippewa County is home to more than 275 thousand acres of forest land, most of which is private land with the remaining 42 thousand acres being … (1 comments)

forestry: What Is Basal Area? - 09/18/14 05:35 PM
What Is Basal Area?

Basal area is one of the many measurements that Foresters use to determine how dense or close to capacity that a forest is.

Technically it is the number of square feet of stumps on an acre of land or if you live a little north of here in Canada, it is the number of square meters per hectare.

A forester not only keeps a close eye on this measurement but works to maintain this density in the forest over time with frequent thinnings and harvests.

Different species of trees thrive … (7 comments)

Ironwood Michigan Timber cruising

I always enjoy working in this area of Wisconsin along the Michigan border, the timber is great, the wildlife is plentiful, and the scenery is exceptional.
Here is a photo of one of our young Foresters with his DME, compass, and other gear cruising a stand of high quality Sugar Maple in Northern Wisconsin.

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014 - Enjoy the CNR Mural

Just before I started attending UWSP in 1981 I had the pleasure of watching a group of art students assembling and installing the big Natural Resource Mural on the south side of the College of Natural Resources.

It is a fascinating computer generated mural of several natural history type scenes all made up of little ceramic tiles with various natural resource related images including wildlife, trees, water molecules, paper machines, surveying equip and many other natural resource images.

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014- Old Main, a bit of Harvard in Wisconsin
Old main is the oldest building on campus and always reminds me of our roots dating back nearly 120 years to when Stevens Point was selected as a Normal school or teaching college.
Old main reminds me of the Harvard campus with old buildings that are hard to photograph due to a plentitude of large dense trees.
These trees came in handy 32 years ago when I had Dendrology class at UWSP and many of the trees that we had to identify from across the … (5 comments)

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014 - Communication Arts Center
This is the Communication Arts Center, which not only houses the UWSP Pointer Newspaper (where I used to write a very long time ago), the campus radio station and TV studio, but it also graduates many fine communication students every year.
Comm degrees come with an emphasis in several areas including Public Relations, Advertising, Mass Media, and Interpersonal/organizational.
There of course are several distinguished graduates of this college including Bob Crane (Forester) and Terry Porter (NBA player and coach)

I hope you enjoyed our series on UWSP (the … (2 comments)

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014 - Enrich your Spiritual life

There are several opportunities on and around campus for a little prayer, besides the obvious classrooms just before a test.
Stevens Point is a town full of churches with a great opportunity for students of most faiths to spend some time with God.

A few notable places to check out include The Newman Center, St Stan’s, and the Peace Lutheran Campus Center.

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014 - the DUC
When I was at UWSP this was known as the UC or University center, but more recently somebody thought it would be a good idea to put a very attractive addition on the front with several stores and of course let the current students pay a pile of extra cash.
Along with this new addition, came a new name, it is now known as the Lee Sherman Dreyfuss University Center, at first this was shortened to the LSDUC, but someone thought that it might look a little strange to have LSD … (3 comments)

Welcome Back UWSP Students- a Wealth of Art on campus 2014
Like many Universities, UWSP has a wealth of art.
Today I mainly took pictures of some of the outdoor art.
You can find art in several buildings including the College of Fine arts, the Library, and the University Center.  You can also find it scattered around campus along the sidewalks and on the side of the CNR building just north of the sundial.
Some of this outdoor art is spectacular and some of is less about art and more about p.t. Barnum salesmanship (a sucker born … (5 comments)

Welcome Back UWSP Students 2014
Welcome back to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, school starts this week and the town is buzzing with activity.  I have seen several groups heading down to Belts for a welcome ice cream break with old and new friends, and today many houses had yard parties as people gathered to reacquaint with old friends and meet a few more before the busy life of classes begins.
For those who do not have housing secured, we have a few more homes available we just finished cleaning and repairs on.  And if anyone needs a couch … (9 comments)

FAQ  How do you Measure and Appraise these Extensive Forests so Quickly?
Occasionally when we talk about doing inventories and Appraisals on several hundred thousand acre forest ownerships people are overwhelmed with the immensity of such a project.
Their first question is how do you do it in less than a lifetime much less in only a month or two?
The quick answer is we are very good at what we do, using systems to keep up our speed and quality, and of course one of a Foresters best friends, Statistics.
The Foresters at Woodland Management Service do Appraise forests … (6 comments)

FAQ   How do I Encourage More Wildlife on My Land?
This is a common question that the Foresters and Wildlife Specialists at Woodland Management Service are asked.
Of course the next question that we ask the client is, “What type of Wildlife would you like to encourage?”

Regardless of which type of Wildlife they are looking for we know that the most important key to maximum Wildlife Habitat is “Edge”.
Edge is basically the area between two or more ecosystems (timber types, timber ages, non forested areas, wetlands, etc.).
It is our job to know which Edge types are … (8 comments)

forestry: FAQ What is Hygrading & why is it so Bad?? - 07/18/14 12:55 AM
FAQ  What is Hygrading & why is it so Bad??
Hygrading is the slow destruction of a forest by removing the higher quality trees and leaving the poorest quality trees to regenerate.
Hygrading is one of the main forest ailments that foresters fight against.
Hygrading is often the result of well-meaning landowners and loggers who go with the old fashioned idea of cutting the big trees and letting the smaller trees grow a while longer.
Some loggers go so far as to set up contracts with landowners allowing them to take all trees over a certain diameter … (7 comments)
