FAQ  Is there a Difference Between a Forester and a Logger??
This is a question that we are not asked often enough; unfortunately far too many assume that Foresters and Loggers are the same.

  Loggers
A logger is someone who harvests trees for a living.
A good logger does know a lot about how a forest grows, which trees are growing well, and the relative value of the trees they are harvesting.
A good logger also knows how to harvest these trees safely, remove them without harming the surrounding trees, and how to make enough … (10 comments)

forestry: Big Wheels and Big Trees at the Rhinelander Logging Museum - 07/16/14 01:36 PM
Big Wheels and Big Trees at the Rhinelander Logging Museum

Most of the early logging was done during the winter for many reasons.  Transportation was the main reason, getting these logs to the river highways was significantly easier to do over frozen ground, and getting the logs down the rivers was much easier during the spring flooding season.

Logging in the winter also allowed the loggers to spend the summers scratching out farms from the dense forest which would hopefully allow their familys to eat while they spend the winter in logging camp.

forestry: FAQ How Much is a Tree Worth?? - 07/14/14 08:45 AM
FAQ  How Much is a Tree Worth??
A question that every forester is asked often is how much a particular tree is worth.
Well it depends…
A lot of factors come into play when we appraise a tree including location, type of tree, size of the tree, condition of the tree, and of course what is the tree’s highest and best use.

Timber Value (for Forest trees)
For many trees, especially those growing in the forest naturally, the most appropriate price is that of its forest products, we call this stumpage value.
Stumpage value is the value of the … (9 comments)

One Year in the New Office of Woodland Management Service.
It's hard to believe that only a year has gone by since we closed on our new office along Hwy 51 in Stevens Point.
A lot has happened during that year, some good and some less enjoyable and I am sure that the next year will be a great and busy year too.

forestry: FAQ Do I need a Timber Appraisal when Buying and Selling Forestland? - 07/11/14 01:52 PM
FAQ  Do I need a Timber Appraisal when Buying and Selling Forestland?
  It depends...
Do you want to take advantage of tax programs such as the Timber Depletion Allowance?
When buying forestland is essential to know your basis, especially the basis of your timber, this allows for a significant tax break when it comes time to sell any timber from the property, and the value of this basis must be determined as of the day that you become the owner of the property.
Do you want your banker to consider the whole value of the property when considering … (6 comments)

Beautiful Montello Wisconsin
I travel through Montello often but seldom stop to look around, recently I had to meet someone at the gas station and while waiting I noticed something worth sharing

Montello is the county seat of Marquette County, and is home to the largest tree in Wisconsin.

And, here are a few pictures of our clients property near Montello, Wisconsin.

forestry: Moving Camp on the Argonne Audit Cruise - 07/02/14 02:31 AM
Moving Camp on the Argonne Audit Cruise

One of the things that I like about these Audit Inventories it that we stay in one remote area long enough to set up a camp.

On this project we had 5 people camped out in 1 camper, 2 trucks and 1 tent.

We found out after setting up this camp along an old logging road that someone else thought that it would also be a good place to set up a bear baiting station 50 yards further down the trail.
The Bears kept … (5 comments)

Artsy Pics on the Argone Wisconsin Forest Audit Inventory
I always enjoy these audit cruises which we do for several clients in order for their shareholders and the SEC to know that their internal inventory matches up with an independent inventory.

Here are a few photos of a day of cruising timber with my two boys on this inventory.
Josh took most of the artsy shots and I took the less interesting shot.

forestry: Referring a Client, because it's the Right thing to do! - 07/01/14 06:59 PM
Referring a Client, because it's the Right thing to do.
This past week I got a call and email from a fellow ACF Forester in Michigan who had a client from Chicago who also owns some land in Central Wisconsin.
This other Forester sent the business my way because he knew that I could do a better job with this property than he could and he was very concerned about the welfare of his client and the client's forest.
He sent the business, because it was the right thing to do, not because he was expecting a sweet referral … (13 comments)

forestry: Pic’s from the Pond 2 - 07/01/14 07:01 AM

Pic’s from the Pond 2
Last week I shared a story and a few pictures from our duck-less duck pond at the Cadott office of Woodland Management Service, and today we will continue with a few more.
As I mentioned last week, in the 15 years since we dug these ponds we have not seen any ducks yet, but Nicks game camera seems to be catching a few of the other wild creatures that spend time here.

forestry: A Foresters Competitive Advantage - 06/30/14 04:33 PM
A Foresters Competitive Advantage
My friend Debbie Reynolds asks for an explanation of what makes us better than our competition...
Though I generally know most of the reasons why we are better than each of our competitors, often for different reasons depending on the individual or firm involved.
I make it a policy that I hold myself and my staff to not ever criticize my competition since I am a firm believer that once mud is thrown the profession is damaged on both sides of the fence.
I do look for the best and encourage the best in myself AND … (8 comments)

An Event that Changed My Career in Forestry
There have been a lot of events in my life that would be considered “life changing” like getting to know God, meeting my wife, teachers that influenced me, and much more.
But to save you all from having to read a book I will contain today's essay to one career changer in my life.
After leaving the USDA Forest Service in the mid 80’s I headed back to the Midwest and took a position in Michigan where I was in charge of buying timber in the Southeastern quarter of the state.
At first it … (10 comments)

Cadott, Wisconsin, Historical Trading Post, 45th parallel, & Forestry Field office

I have been spending a lot of time in our Cadott office this month, doing some forestry work and some property management work.

I thought it might be nice to give the folks in active rain land a taste of Cadott this week as well.

Many like to think of Cadott as the little town that boasts of its location "half way between the equator and the north pole", I prefer to think of its namesake, the early French fur … (8 comments)

Woodland Management Service Rusk County Forestry Camp,

Nestled in among some of the best trees in Eastern Rusk County we set up camp for another Post Sale Audit Inventory.

Rusk County is not known for having nearly the quality of forests that are found in the Argonne area, our client does a great job of managing for high quality timber and it is reflected in the best timber in the county.
We find that we can be more competative than other companies partly due to our willingness to camp out in the forest that we … (1 comments)

Pic's from the Pond, part 1 of many
About 15 years ago I was sitting in my Cadott office when it occurred to me that it would be very nice to have a duck pond in from of my office window.
So I talked to Bob Josephic, a friend from the Cadott Chamber of Commerce and my Lions club sponsor about getting one of his large excavators out to my place for a day of digging ponds.
After a day of digging I had my old barn foundation buried, and half a dozen ponds dug around the farm.

Inventory of the fine quality hardwoods of Northeast Wisconsin.
A great place to visit, a great place to live and an even better place to grow high quality hardwoods including Red Oak, Sugar Maple, Ash, Yellow Birch, and More.  But watch out for the Hodags in this area.
Notice the high quality trees and abundant regeneration in this photo of one of our Foresters.
