franciscans downtown: Bacon, Old Friends, Memories, and Priorities - 05/31/19 06:40 AM
Bacon, Old Friends, Memories, and Priorities
Through my work with Franciscans I have found many friends in the homeless community and a few of them were active in my thoughts this morning.
After arriving home from a Forestry and Real Estate trip to the Northwoods early this morning, my wife asked me what I wanted for breakfast and Bacon and Eggs were a tasty choice.
While enjoying a slice of tasty bacon a couple of friends who have both passed on this year came to mind and a little tiff that they had.  A dispute that seemed so important to them and somewhat trivial … (14 comments)

franciscans downtown: Earthweek 2017, Summary and Conclusion - 04/23/17 11:32 PM
Earthweek 2017, Summary and Conclusion
A good share of today was spent leading our local Franciscan group, perhaps an appropriate activity for the end of another Earthweek.
Considering that St Francis is considered to be the patron saint of ecology it seems fitting that I would spend a good share of this Earth day leading this group and helping to carry on the traditions passed down by this fun little fellow so long ago.
I am tired tonight so will conclude quickly with a summary of this year's Earthweek and Earthday posts.
Stop by and learn and enjoy a few of them.
Peace and All … (3 comments)

franciscans downtown: Stevens Point Good Friday Walk - 04/09/17 10:46 PM
Stevens Point Good Friday Walk
There are so many opportunities to meditate on the events of Holy Week. One of my favorite activities is the Good Friday Walk. To commemorate Jesus final walk carrying his cross, we walk through Stevens Point. We stop at 14 various locations to pray for people in need there. Some of the stops I remember from previous years are:
University to pray for the students, the hospital to pray for the ill, the fire and police stations to pray for those who help others in need.   When we stop at Franciscans Downtown, we take a break, … (0 comments)

Richard and Mary will be filling in in the morning and I will be there later in the afternoon.
The LaCrosse Diocese will be celebrating their annual Chrism Mass at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral at 10:30 am, with Bishop Callahan the celebrant.

Franciscans Downtown is in a convenient downtown location which lets people know that we appreciate the Franciscan values, and that these values are important in our everyday lives.
A new program is being hosted by Leo Jacoby called Monday Connections.
It is a unique opportunity for those interested to stop in and talk about connecting the Sunday gospel reading to our realities, sharing our love for God with our love of neighbors.
Everyone is welcome to join in for conversation at 11:30 Monday mornings, to share their ideas and interpretations of the scripture and how it relates to … (1 comments)

franciscans downtown: Stevens Point Students help care for our fine feathered friends. - 03/26/17 10:22 PM
Stevens Point Students help care for our fine feathered friends.
The seventh and eighth grade CCD students for St. Joseph and St. Stephens parishes are building birdhouses to be installed at the various daycare centers throughout the Stevens Point area.
Approximately 30 birdhouses will be built on Wednesday March 29. Each student will have a chance to assemble at least one birdhouse.
Every fourth Wednesday the CCD students have a service project designed to help out our community.
This one was inspired by St. Francis of Assisi’s love for nature and all of God’s creatures.
This service project was made available through … (2 comments)

Take a little time off this weekend to enjoy the opportunity to grow.

franciscans downtown: Gospel Refreshment and Conversations at Franciscans Downtown - 03/05/17 11:43 PM
Gospel Refreshment and Conversations at Franciscans Downtown
This post is actually from a while back, but I am sharing it again tonight since some of my other posts may have people wondering about this special little hangout in Stevens Point.
Today was one of my days that I take the afternoon off from my regular work and spend some time volunteering with the other Franciscans at our little lounge downtown.
Some days it is more like a homeless shelter, somedays it seems like it is more about showing a few movies, and other days like today it is more about the words that Fr … (2 comments)

franciscans downtown: Lost, Stand Still; Let the Forest Find You - 02/19/17 11:15 PM
Lost, Stand Still; Let the Forest Find You.

I came across this post from a year ago tonight and thought an encore was in order, I hope you like it as much as I do.
Though it has been an overwhelmingly busy week this week, I am still helping out at the Franciscan house as I try to always do a few afternoons on any week that I am in town.
And it is a good thing since there is always a great need.
Today after things calmed down and Fr Finnian who I was working with left for home I was doing a bit … (7 comments)

Franciscans Downtown, A Ministry of Presence; Reflection, Conversation, and Refreshment

"A place of Gospel Refreshment; Rest and Conversation on the stories of our lives."

Franciscans Downtown, is not only a place that I like to volunteer at several times each week, but also a place that I like to share with all of my guests, including a few out of town visitors that stopped by today.
A few years ago my friend, Fr. Placid Stroik, retired from 30 years of service at Covenant House in New York City.  He moved back to his home state of Wisconsin, where he took a position as … (3 comments)

Camping Mats at Franciscans Downtown with my bag lady friend Mary
I invited my friend Mary Patten to join me at Franciscans Downtown yesterday and I am glad that I did.
Last week I met Mary while we both were volunteering at the Warming Shelter in Point, a wonderful lady with a warm heart and a passion for service to the people in our community.
While we quietly visited in the room off to the side from where our homeless guests were sleeping, I noticed that she was doing an unusual activity to keep her hands busy and create an important item for … (9 comments)

Franciscans Downtown, A Summer Home for Reflection, Conversation, and Refreshment

When my friend Debbie Laity suggested the Show Us Your Home for the Summer...The 2016 Mid Year Challenge, I thought that this may be a good opportunity to share a bit about a Stevens Point Treasure.

A Time Change Reflection on Being Human with Fr Placid
I have learned so much during my time of working with Father Placid, a man of deep love and understanding who gets a lot of joy out of watching people in their human condition, and offering to help where he can.
Today he sent me this email on a little time change reflection that I enjoyed and think you may too.

franciscans downtown: Sister Claude Got It Right This Time… - 03/03/16 04:32 PM
Sister Claude Got It Right This Time…
It was a busy day, and week, at Franciscans Downtown with preparations for the Mercy Marathon, Easter, and many other activities.
Most of us who work there do it as a side job that we fit in around our read jobs, (those jobs that pay the bills so that we can be there).
Father Placid's real job is to be one of three friars who work as the chaplains for a large convent near Green Bay.
One of the realities of these large convents is that they are the place where the nuns who have dedicated their … (10 comments)
