hunting: Porcupine; a fellow with very few friends in the Forest - 12/23/15 04:23 PM
Porcupine; a fellow with very few friends in the Forest.

Tonight I came across a batch of photos that one of my Foresters sent to me about a month ago from Eau Claire County Wisconsin.
So many animals of the wild are stealthy and elusive leaving as few tracks as they can and try to keep the environment clean in their wake, but not our friend the Porcupine.
You can generally spot a Porkie den tree from a hundred feet away, with it's dirty well used trail and telltale pile of extruded sausage type droppings piled high and flowing out the door.
As a forester and general fan … (12 comments)

hunting: Clark County Wisconsin; Top Quality Forests & Wildlife - 11/08/15 02:11 PM

Clark County Wisconsin, Top Quality Forests & Wildlife
Clark County Wisconsin includes a great mix of High quality forests and dairy farms which provide great habitat for many wildlife species, especially Whitetail Deer.

Our clients at Woodland Management Service own a lot of premium forest land in … (3 comments)

hunting: Deer Yards, Poor Hunts, Deep Snow, Frigid Temps = Certain Starvation - 02/19/15 02:28 PM
Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Frigid Temps = Certain Starvation
This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings.  Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this.
The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest.
Unfortunately unless there is a clear cut right next to one of these deer yards, the … (15 comments)

hunting: One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts. - 11/20/14 10:42 AM
One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts.
Our foresters have been out and about this week trying to get a few projects completed before  the forests fill up with orange people carrying guns.
It is good to see that the roads are filled with people heading north toward their cabins and hunting grounds indicating plenty of interest.
Though one thing does concern me in that the snow is deep and the temperatures are cold which if history rings true will equal a low harvest of deer this year.
When the going gets tough all but the hardiest hunters may just … (6 comments)

hunting: Hunting Deer in Posted Places? - 11/17/14 05:27 AM
Hunting Deer in Posted Places?
With the Wisconsin Deer Gun Season approaching fast most hunters have a prime site secured but a few are still relying on public lands or finding a last minute.
Keep in mind that in Wisconsin it is Illegal to Trespass, even on Non Posted Land.
So take some time to get to know the owners of the land that you wish to hunt on and get written permission.
Failure to do so may make for a very expensive and unpleasant deer hunting season.
You could also call me, I may know of a few great properties that … (6 comments)

hunting: Hunting Nightmare Caught On Tape - 11/14/14 07:41 AM
Hunting Nightmare Caught On Tape   It's that time of year when hunters head for the woods all over the country in an effort to keep the herds of wild animals under control and it is important to remember hunter safety.
It only takes a second and a simple overlooked safety
precaution, for lives to be lost and destroyed.

Watch the attached video with your crew, and discuss what went wrong here.
Take a little time to review safety procedures with all of your crew, take a safety class, and keep this a safe and happy … (13 comments)

hunting: Food, Cover, and Water; Like a Magnet for Wildlife - 09/26/14 12:01 AM
Food, Cover, and Water;  Like a Magnet for Wildlife
When I was a kid growing up on a farm surrounded with forest these small narrow fields were a great frustration for my dad.
Not only were they more work than the larger fields, but the yield was always lacking.
The yield was low largely due to the amount of the crop that was devoured by the great herds of deer, bear and other wildlife that thought that these were planted for them.
Now that I am in the business of helping people to raise wildlife and forests I look at these … (6 comments)
