Waushara County Forestland Market Snapshot
Quality Oaks, Pines, and Wildlife, Waushara County Wisconsin 175 Thousand Acres of Forested Wildlife habitat can be found in this beautiful Central Wisconsin County. Though the Oaks here are not spectacular, the pines are exceptional. One delightful remnant of a foresters advice from the mid part of the last century stands out with spectacular results. That bit of advice that he gave to all who planted pines here was to mix a little bit of White Pine in with all of the Red Pines that were being planted. The result of planting this row of White Pine to every three

huntingland: Kissing Moose & Wildlife Habitat Improvement with a Chainsaw!
- 03/03/17 11:58 PM
Kissing Moose & Wildlife Habitat Improvement with a Chainsaw I was watching Larry the cable guy on the History channel a while ago. They were up in Alaska trying to use a moose call to bring in some moose, and they were unsuccessful until one of the researchers brought out a chainsaw and started it up, and the moose came running in. The head Wildlife Specialist at Woodland Management Service, Jesse Kulesa, always tells his clients that the best thing they can do to attract most wildlife is to do some cutting. Having a winter timber sale or improvement cutting does

huntingland: Wildlife Neglect can be Deadly in the Deer Yards
- 02/19/17 11:06 PM
Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Frigid Temps = Certain Starvation This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings. Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this. The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest. Unfortunately unless there is a clear cut right next to one of these deer yards, the meager vegetation within

Price County, Wisconsin Good Forest Management Shown Here! Price County is a wild area where you are almost guaranteed to see some great wildlife like Bears and Wolves. It is a great place to raise timber and wildlife which is why you see so many smart people anxious to buy hunting land and timber land here. Over the years I have been extremely impressed with the results of those properties that were well managed with good forestry, especially the Industrial lands where every tree is aggressively managed, the junk cut out and the better quality trees left to grow and

huntingland: Caution: Moose Can Be Cranky and Dangerous!
- 01/29/17 11:51 PM
Moose not as warm and cuddly as they look. Many of my friends ask questions like “how do you protect yourself from bears out there?”. I answer that bears are seldom a problem, and certainly not worth carrying a heavy gun around for, but the Moose can be a real problem. Though bear will generally run and hide, moose will often attack and it is best to have a good sized tree to get behind if you get too close to a moose. Moose have adapted over the centuries to be mortal enemies of Wolves and thus will do their best to stomp any dogs

Selling Rural Land? Learn to Read and Write Property Legal Descriptions! We work with a lot of Real Estate Agents in evaluating, finding and helping sell forestland and one of my pet peeves has always been a lack of proper training my most professionals in writing proper legal descriptions. A proper legal description allows anybody who reads it to quickly locate the property on a map as well as on the ground. Our Forestry and Wildlife professionals learn to read and write legal description in college but for most of our clerical staff the first lesson they need to learn is

This heavily forested county is a prized recreation place for hunters, hikers, boaters and more who come here to enjoy the lakes and forests. This county is also the home of Jean Hedren who you will find not only writing blogs about great recreational opportunities in Northwestern Wisconsin, but she is also the expert in the area

huntingland: Secrets to Great Hunting Land; 3 Essentials
- 01/08/17 09:54 PM
3 Essentials for Great Hunting Land!
Deer like most wildlife species spend most of their time in what we call Edge areas. These Edge areas are basically the place where the Three Essentials of all Wildlife Habitat exist, Food, Water, and Cover. If you understand these essentials and how they apply to Whitetail Deer, and have them on your land then the deer will stay here. Water In this part of the country, water is seldom a problem with plentiful wetlands, ponds, streams, lakes and puddles just about everywhere. In the event that you do not have any water nearby, it won’t take much for us to

Prickly Porkie Pests of the Northwoods on a Winter Day in Wisconsin. Tonight I will share a few pictures and thoughts on a batch of photos that one of my Foresters sent to me from Eau Claire County Wisconsin. So many animals of the wild are stealthy and elusive leaving as few tracks as they can and try to keep the environment clean in their wake, but not our friend the Porcupine. You can generally spot a Porkie den tree from about a hundred feet away, with it's dirty well used trail and telltale pile of extruded sausage type droppings piled high and flowing out the door. As
