timber appraisal: A Reminder of Why We Love Winter in the Northwoods! - 03/30/15 05:23 PM

A Reminder of Why We Love Winter in the Northwoods!
Though the temps were hovering in the teens when we packed up and headed toward Wisconsin this weekend, we did get one more reminder of why we love to plan our Northwoods projects in the Winter.
While stopping at the Effie Café for a little coffee and pie, we saw a couple of Minnesota’s state birds hovering around just waiting for the many people who come up here during the summer to enjoy some of those 10,000 lakes and other bodies of water that we prefer to deal with … (9 comments)

timber appraisal: Finished, Now Minnesota can Warm Up - 03/28/15 04:30 AM

Finished, Now Minnesota can Warm Up
We finished our project last night just before dark before celebrating with a nice fish fry in Effie.
A few days ahead of schedule and picked up well over 100 extra plots from the main contractor, always nice to bring in a few bonus bucks.
It was great that the weather held out for us and made for miserably cold nights and brisk days with plenty of frozen trails, roads, lakes and swamps to make our travels efficient.
Now the weatherman is predicting that things should change from the negative numbers that we … (10 comments)

timber appraisal: Beautiful Office Space Deep in the Forest - 03/27/15 03:23 AM

Beautiful Office Space Deep in the Forest
It has been a week of the toughest internet and phone reception ever.  With no phone coverage or data connection in or anywhere near camp and the closest wifi that we have found involves a 50 mile drive to a café in Effie MN.
I told the crew that I would likely be late tonight since I was planning to drive to town to use some wifi and get a bit of paper work done today that required good internet, not the spotty occasional stuff that we find in surprising places far … (20 comments)

timber appraisal: No Wimps Allowed - 03/02/15 11:12 AM
No Wimps Allowed
As we cruise through and camp out in the rugged Northern Minnesota forests and swamps this sign on the coffee machine struck my eye.
I have told this to a few job applicants in the past, and some ran right away and others waited until they actually heard one of my assignments, and others jumped at the chance to challenge themselves.
My son was raised on the experience of challenging himself so this rugged kind of life suits him well and he is always anxious to get out there for an adventure, as well as save a lot … (29 comments)

timber appraisal: Above and Beyond, Half a Million Beyond - 10/31/14 12:19 PM
Above and Beyond, Half a Million Beyond.
Our friend Jared asked  me to tell about a time when we have gone above and beyond this month
At first I was at a loss, wondering if I should tell about some of the renters that we have gone far beyond what should be required by a landlord, sometimes willingly and sometimes against our will.
But then I thought it may be better to tell one of our many Forestry stories, the story of Frank T, from Polk County Wisconsin.
Frank called me and asked for some advice in selling his timber.

timber appraisal: Diameter Breast Height (DBH), Why is this so important? - 09/22/14 11:25 AM
Diameter Breast Height (DBH), Why is this so important?

No this is not a new measurement that the ladies are using.

Rather it is an old measurement that every Forester is intimately familiar with.

Every Forester knows where Breast Height is on their body even though it is seldom where the forester's Breasts are actually located; on some it is as low as their navel, and others it it closer to their chin.

It is a critical measure in our need to have consistent measurements while measuring tree volumes.

We all know that Diameter Breast Height … (13 comments)
