Langlade County Wisconsin; Quality Northern Hardwoods & Wildlife
We at Woodland Management  Service first worked in this beautiful county over 25 years ago while cruising timber for Georgia Pacific and we have worked for many other companies and individuals here since that time.
From the start I was impressed with the largest Kettles I have ever seen and a great deal of top quality trees within them.
Our clients at Woodland Management Service own large acreages of … (1 comments)

timber investments: Earth Week 2017, Investing in, & Profiting from, Sustainable Forestry - 04/22/17 10:16 AM
Earth Week, Investing in, and Profiting from, Sustainable Forestry Many think that we do our best for the environment when we ignore it, stop cutting trees and use alternative building products and digital paper.
But that is seldom the case since an ignored and unprofitable garden generally gets plowed up and used for something else.
Everytime that we see periods when forest products are low, people start bulldozing their trees and planting subdivisions and cornfields.
Fortunately when forest products are profitable, a few of those fields get planted to trees, where they will eventually become a forest again.
I found this … (1 comments)

timber investments: A Visit to Upper Michigan’s Bond Falls. - 01/29/17 04:43 PM
A Visit to Upper Michigan’s Bond Falls.
The waters that empty into Lake Superior are abundant with water falls and a constant source of wonder for the many tourists that roam the forests of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.
Though we work extensively through this area, we seldom have time to stop and smell the flowers, or take pictures of the falls.
Well this past year one of our Foresters, Nick Crane was meeting with a client in the UP to pick up some maps for a project along the East Coast and had a little time to be a tourist.
So Today I am going … (23 comments)

timber investments: Hygrading, The Largest Destroyer of Quality Forests! - 10/13/16 04:57 PM
FAQ  What is Hygrading & why is it so Bad??
Hygrading is the slow destruction of a forest by removing the higher quality trees and leaving the poorest quality trees to regenerate.
Hygrading is one of the main forest ailments that foresters fight against.
Hygrading is often the result of well-meaning landowners and loggers who go with the old fashioned idea of cutting the big trees and letting the smaller trees grow a while longer.
Some loggers go so far as to set up contracts with landowners allowing them to take all trees over a certain diameter while leaving all of … (15 comments)

timber investments: Appraising Extensive Forests at Lightning Speed! - 05/17/16 05:11 AM
FAQ  How do you Measure and Appraise these Large Forests so Quickly and Accurately?
 The quick answer is Statistics.
The Foresters at Woodland Management Service do Appraise forests of all sizes ranging from individual urban trees to large tracts as large as a half million acres.
Considering that it takes a day to measure and appraise a group of trees in a yard you would think that it would take weeks to measure a forty, or decades to measure a large half million acre tract.
Luckily for our clients, as the properties get larger, our samples get smaller.  On very small properties where the diversity … (6 comments)

timber investments: This DIY Forest Landowner Nearly Lost a Half Million Dollars - 05/08/16 04:36 PM
How Much Do You Save When You Do It Yourself?  (a Negative $492,600)

Unfortunately the people who need to make the most money from their forest are generally the first people to take a small shortcut that will damage their forest and their bank account.

Countless examples have proven to us and our clients that it pays many times over to hire a Forester to manage your timber sale.

It really does pay big money to hire a forester.

I recently had a man call me and ask for some advice in selling his timber.

timber investments: Upper Michigan Gogebic County; Forests, Wildlife, and Recreation - 05/08/16 11:44 AM
Upper Michigan Gogebic County; Forests, Wildlife, and Recreation.
Upper Michigan is one of my favorite places with cool summers, snow filled winters and some of the best Sugar Maple in the world.
With over 9 million acres of forestland, and not that many people, this place is a real treasure.

This place may be a little tough on the deer with deep snows and less food than we see in Wisconsin or Lower Michigan, but you will find more of some of the other wildlife species like Bears, Moose, Wolves and much more.
I am always impressed with the quality of the forests in the … (4 comments)

timber investments: Wild Blueberries, Making Summer Worthwhile. - 09/09/15 03:55 PM
Wild Blueberries, Making Summer Worthwhile.
Face it folks, summer in the woods can suck in so many ways, starting with extreme humidity, unfrozen water everywhere, and bugs that think you are their lifelong dinner plate.
But one thing that makes it worthwhile is that day when you are fighting through some terrain that most people never dream of dealing with and glance down to see those telltale leaves and tiny little blue berries of our favorite treat.
I was going through an SD card that one of our foresters dropped off last week when I noticed a few pics that made me wish I … (15 comments)

Perseid Meteor Shower Coming to a Sky Near You This Week August 11-15, 2015Perseid meteor shower
Here is a repeat of my blog from last summer, I hope that you will take a little time this summer to enjoy some falling starts with me.

Perseid meteor shower

It’s been a long busy and stressful July so far, and Wednesday night or should I say Thursday morning as I crawled out of my truck at the Cadott office beat and stressed, I was treated to a  Falling Star.

It brought a smile to my face, remembering all the times that I have looked forward … (12 comments)

I hope you enjoyed a small glimpse into a timber cruise, or inventory.
