timberland: Prickly Porkie Pests of the Northwoods on a Winter Day in Wisconsin
- 12/22/16 01:38 AM
Prickly Porkie Pests of the Northwoods on a Winter Day in Wisconsin. Tonight I will share a few pictures and thoughts on a batch of photos that one of my Foresters sent to me from Eau Claire County Wisconsin. So many animals of the wild are stealthy and elusive leaving as few tracks as they can and try to keep the environment clean in their wake, but not our friend the Porcupine. You can generally spot a Porkie den tree from about a hundred feet away, with it's dirty well used trail and telltale pile of extruded sausage type droppings piled high and flowing out the door. As

timberland: Adams County Wis Forest Land Report December 2016

Adams County, Sand County along the Wisconsin River, teaming with Wildlife and Forests When Aldo Leopold wrote 'A Sand County Almanac' he was sitting on his sandy tree farm just a few miles down river from here in Sauk County, but the terrain is about the same, miles of Pines, Oaks and other forests all growing on a flat sandy plain. It is a great place to raise pines which is one of the reasons why you see the Wisconsin River lined with paper mills just a few miles north of here. Just to the south of this county we find the world

timberland: Selling Rural Land Learn to Read & Write Property Legal Descriptions
- 05/03/16 02:57 PM
Selling Rural Land? Learn to Read and Write Property Legal Descriptions We work with a lot of Real Estate Agents in evaluating, finding and helping sell forestland and one of my pet peeves has always been a lack of proper training my most professionals in writing proper legal descriptions. A proper legal description allows anybody who reads it to quickly locate the property on a map as well as on the ground. Our Forestry and Wildlife professionals learn to read and write legal description in college but for most of our clerical staff the first lesson they need to learn is

timberland: Outlasting Many Forest Generations
- 10/18/15 07:09 AM
Outlasting Many Forest Generations Generally trees are a long term thing and abandoned cabins are very short lived. Many of the forest trees we work with are long lived species that live to be over a hundred years old before they start to show signs of the end. And often when a cabin is abandoned in this area of Upper Michigan, the snow caves in the roof and nature quickly absorbs it. But it seems to be the inverse in this situation on the Yellow Dog Plain in Marquette County. Here we have a short lived tree type, Jack Pine, which lives a mere 40 to

timberland: Foresters and Loggers, Dissimilar as ...
- 09/22/15 04:55 AM
FAQ Is there a Difference Between a Forester and a Logger?? This is a question that we are not asked often enough; unfortunately far too many assume that Foresters and Loggers are the same. Loggers A logger is someone who harvests trees for a living. A good logger does know a lot about how a forest grows, which trees are growing well, and the relative value of the trees they are harvesting. A good logger also knows how to harvest these trees safely, remove them without harming the surrounding trees, and how to make enough

timberland: Hygrading, Destroying More Forests Than Any Other Activity!
- 09/22/15 04:37 AM
FAQ What is Hygrading & why is it so Bad?? Hygrading is the slow destruction of a forest by removing the higher quality trees and leaving the poorest quality trees to regenerate. Hygrading is one of the main forest ailments that foresters fight against. Hygrading is often the result of well-meaning landowners and loggers who go with the old fashioned idea of cutting the big trees and letting the smaller trees grow a while longer. Some loggers go so far as to set up contracts with landowners allowing them to take all trees over a certain diameter while leaving all of

timberland: Encourage More Wildlife on Your Land
- 09/20/15 12:36 PM
FAQ How do I Encourage More Wildlife on My Land? This is a common question that the Foresters and Wildlife Specialists at Woodland Management Service are asked. Of course the next question that we ask the client is, “What type of Wildlife would you like to encourage?” Regardless of which type of Wildlife they are looking for we know that the most important key to maximum Wildlife Habitat is “Edge”. Edge is basically the area between two or more ecosystems (timber types, timber ages, non forested areas, wetlands, etc.). It is our job to know which Edge types are

timberland: Tick Checking, an Important and sometimes Fun Job
- 06/17/15 07:11 AM
Tick Checking, an Important Job that can be Fun Though ticks are around throughout the year, we are now in the hieght of Tick Season in this part of the country. You don’t have to go anywhere near the woods to be found by a wood tick or a deer tick. We find most of them are lurking in the grass between the road and the woods and sometimes even in our lawn. When I was a kid we did not get too excited about ticks, they were just a part of summer. Lyme disease was not something that we had heard of yet

- 06/07/15 04:19 PM
A Million Dollars Thrown Away Through Neglect of 270 Acres A friend recently introduced me to a friend of his who owns a half section (320 acres) in Western Wisconsin. Both of these fellows seemed proud of the fact that in the 55 years that he owned this property he had been preserving the forest, never cutting anything and certain that it must be worth a fortune by now. Then I had do my job and burst their bubble, and pull out my handy spreadsheet. Just like a rental home that is ignored for 50 years, not only will you lose

timberland: FAQ – Can Using Forest Products Help The Environment
- 05/26/15 10:31 PM
FAQ – How Can Using Forest Products Help The Environment. Many people think that using forest products instead of unnatural products like plastic, steel, concrete, etc is bad for the environment because they think that it will prevent trees from being cut down. This could not be further from the truth but it is a falacy that persists because these people don’t take the time to understand the scientific and economic systems that govern the situation. First the Economic Systems: The land will be used for something. If corn is worth more than trees, then trees will

timberland: FAQ Is leaving my forest alone an option for Wildlife, Forest Health?
- 05/26/15 10:23 PM
FAQ Is leaving my woodland untouched the best option for Wildlife and Forest Health? Leaving your forest alone is seldom the best option for either wildlife habitat or a healthy forest. An unmanaged forest will become stagnant reducing the amount of food for wildlife and crowding out the younger trees which are important for the next generation of the forest. Most wildlife requires a diverse forest with varied ages and types of trees for both food and shelter. And a healthy sustainable forest requires various ages of trees to enable future generations.
