FAQ   How do I Attract More Wildlife to My Land?
This is a common question that the Foresters and Wildlife Specialists at Woodland Management Service are asked.
Of course the next question that we ask the client is, “What type of Wildlife would you like to attract?”

Regardless of which type of Wildlife they are looking for we know that the most important key to maximum Wildlife Habitat is “Edge”.

wildlife habitat: Buying Forest Land? get a Timber & Wildlife Evaluation! 🌲 🌳 - 06/10/17 10:44 PM

Timber & Wildlife Evaluation making a difference in finding BuyersHaving a good Timber appraisal and Wildlife Habitat inventory can make the difference in finding the right buyer for forestland properties.
A good Forest inventory and appraisal will allow your seller to properly price and market the property both to investors and hunters who are looking to maximize their investment.  Wildlife habitat should also be incorporated into this appraisal as hunting and recreation is the number one reason for most forestland purchases in Wisconsin.

wildlife habitat: Creating or Buying a Wildlife Paradise! - 04/16/17 11:29 PM
Creating a Wildlife Paradise on My Land
Like humans, most wildlife species are looking for a great place to live, their habitat.
Great wildlife habitat includes a good mix of food, shelter, and water.
The main way forest and wildlife managers create habitat for wildlife is by managing the stages of forest succession.
Forest succession is basically the path that a forest takes from an open field, to young even aged trees, to older uneven aged trees, and finally to a mature climax forest.
Creating various wildlife habitats generally involves harvesting trees, planting trees, and or allowing … (3 comments)

Prairie Chicken Re-route and Video
A few days ago a friend posted this video of Prairie Chickens doing their mating dance on Facebook and it reminded me of a story that I had shared online a few years ago.
So tonight I will reshare the story and the video.

My wife Sally is writing a blog tonight on the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken festival, which you should go over and read, after reading and commenting on my little blog.
Speaking to her about this got me thinking about a few events from over thirty years ago when I was an underclassman at UWSP.

wildlife habitat: Wildlife Neglect can be Deadly in the Deer Yards - 02/19/17 11:06 PM
Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Frigid Temps = Certain Starvation
This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings.  Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this.
The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest.
Unfortunately unless there is a clear cut right next to one of these deer yards, the meager vegetation within … (2 comments)

Do You Have Your Hunting Land Secured Yet?
Time is running short for those looking for that perfect place to hunt this year.
Though many have already found their bit of Wildlife Paradise, for those who have not, it is still not too late.

A few things to consider when seeking your hunting land:
Proximity to your home     Some want it close enough to get out there after work.
Others want it far enough away that they will not be disturbed.
What type of hunting do you want to do?     Deer, Turkey, Waterfowl, Small Game, etc.

wildlife habitat: FAQ Do I need a Timber Appraisal when Buying & Selling Forestland? - 06/14/16 08:07 AM
FAQ  Do I need a Timber Appraisal when Buying and Selling Forestland?
  It depends...
Do you want to take advantage of tax programs such as the Timber Depletion Allowance?
When buying forestland is essential to know your basis, especially the basis of your timber, this allows for a significant tax break when it comes time to sell any timber from the property, and the value of this basis must be determined as of the day that you become the owner of the property.
Do you want your banker to consider the whole value of the property when considering your mortgage?
Why miss out … (5 comments)

These Mistakes Could Cost You a Forest Land Sale
A story about why a potentially valuable chunk of Forestland did not Sell, or nearly did not sell.
One thing that we have learned over the years is that some agents know how to sell forestland and others just don’t get it.
Those who don’t get it will price the property low to start with, put minimum effort into marketing the property, like posting it on the MLS and their own website, and then wonder why it is getting lots of traffic but not selling.
Recently one of these agents who … (9 comments)

Do I need to have a Clear Cut on my property?
“I have been told that I will need to have a Clear Cut on my property, is there an alternative way to manage my forest?”
It depends…
It depends on what type of trees are in your forest
And what your goals are for your forest.

Some types of trees require total sunlight to reproduce and grow such as Aspen, White Birch, Cottonwood, Red Pine, Jack Pine, Spruce, and Oak.
If your goals for your forest involve keeping the above species then a clear cut may be … (1 comments)
