wildlife management: Now that you own some Forest Land, What's Next? - 06/12/17 10:56 PM
Now that you own some Forest Land, What's Next?

Often times I get calls from people who have recently acquired a parcel of Forestland and recognizing that they have a prized asset, seek to find some expert advice on how to maximize this asset.

The first critical step is to have an appraisal completed.

The best time to have an appraisal is before purchasing a property, but if this has not been done then the second best time is NOW.

Folks who have an appraisal completed before the purchase often do it at the insistence of their lender, to substantiate the collateral for a purchase … (6 comments)

wildlife management: Bald Eagles a Soaring Recovery in the Lake States! - 05/26/17 11:33 PM
Bald Eagles a Soaring Recovery in the Lake States!

When I was young Bald Eagles were very rare to see, and were nearly extinct throughout the United States.  This was due to a pesticide called DDT, once this was banned, the recovery began.

Now we see Eagles everywhere we go in the Northern States, They are a very hardy bird, enduring harsh weather, eating anything including roadkill and handouts from fishermen.

With a lifespan of over 30 years they have recovered quite nicely.

wildlife management: DIY Forest Landowners; Frequent Rip-off Victims! - 04/16/17 11:02 PM
Loggers Love DIY Forest Landowners

Over the past 30 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning this lesson the hard way.
Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out.  They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process.

A forester knows how to;
Expertly market your timber to get you 400-1000% more money for your trees! Mark the … (0 comments)

Aldo Leopold: Wisconsin Pioneer in Forestry and Wildlife Ecology
Recently, I shared a blog post on Sauk County Wisconsin, a place that one of our nations pioneer Foresters and Wildlife Ecologists went to commune with nature during his final years as a professor at the University of Wisconsin.
Realizing that many outside of the Natural Resource professions may have never heard of this man I thought that it my be good to share a few words on him as well as a video.
If you ever have a chance I would suggest that you pick up a copy of his writings from this … (4 comments)

wildlife management: Prairie Chicken Re-route and Video - 04/07/17 10:57 PM
Prairie Chicken Re-route and Video
A few days ago a friend posted this video of Prairie Chickens doing their mating dance on Facebook and it reminded me of a story that I had shared online a few years ago.
So tonight I will reshare the story and the video.

My wife Sally is writing a blog tonight on the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken festival, which you should go over and read, after reading and commenting on my little blog.
Speaking to her about this got me thinking about a few events from over thirty years ago when I was an underclassman at UWSP.

wildlife management: Dude Where's My Car? Things We Find In The Woods - 01/27/17 11:53 PM
Dude Where's My Car?  Things We Find In The Woods.
Apparently someone spent a little too much time at the Colburn Tavern, or something like that and lost his car in the woods.
Well it was a blustery cold day out in the woods marking trees and we were fortunate enough to find this fine old car.
Lost for so many years and now it is found, if you know who lost this fine vehicle, let me know.

wildlife management: Make Your Hunting Land a Wildlife Magnet! - 10/14/16 04:56 PM
FAQ   How do I Encourage More Wildlife on My Land?
This is a common question that the Foresters and Wildlife Specialists at Woodland Management Service are asked.
Of course the next question that we ask the client is, “What type of Wildlife would you like to encourage?”

Regardless of which type of Wildlife they are looking for we know that the most important key to maximum Wildlife Habitat is “Edge”.
Edge is basically the area between two or more ecosystems (timber types, timber ages, non forested areas, wetlands, etc.).
It is our job to know which Edge types are … (6 comments)

wildlife management: Moose not as warm and cuddly as they look - 02/14/16 03:24 PM
Moose not as warm and cuddly as they look.
Many of my friends ask questions like “how do you protect yourself from bears out there?”.
I answer that bears are seldom a problem, and certainly not worth carrying a heavy gun around for, but the Moose can be a real problem.
Though bear will generally run and hide, moose will often attack and it is best to have a good sized tree to get behind if you get too close to a moose.
Moose have adapted over the centuries to be mortal enemies of Wolves and thus will do their best to stomp any dogs … (9 comments)

wildlife management: LEASING HUNTING LAND; Opportunities for All - 03/21/15 03:43 PM

LEASING HUNTING LAND; INCOME FOR LANDOWNERS, WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS, AND GREAT LAND FOR HUNTERS.

—By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife.

Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay.  Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes.  The … (6 comments)

Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Frigid Temps = Certain Starvation
This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings.  Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this.
The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest.
Unfortunately unless there is a clear cut right next to one of these deer yards, the … (15 comments)

Thursday is the day for students and alumni of the College of Natural Resources at UWSP to check out upcoming career opportunities and meet a few employers.

Nick will be spending the day at the Career fair where he will be meeting with students and graduates, answering questions and collecting resumes.

Since we do have a few immediate openings, he will be sending a few of these candidates straight over to the office where they will be able to meet with me, discuss the openings and their qualifications.

wildlife management: One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts. - 11/20/14 10:42 AM
One More Day Before The Wisconsin Deer Season Starts.
Our foresters have been out and about this week trying to get a few projects completed before  the forests fill up with orange people carrying guns.
It is good to see that the roads are filled with people heading north toward their cabins and hunting grounds indicating plenty of interest.
Though one thing does concern me in that the snow is deep and the temperatures are cold which if history rings true will equal a low harvest of deer this year.
When the going gets tough all but the hardiest hunters may just … (6 comments)
