wildlife management: Quality Forests and Foresters of Northern Wisconsin - 06/07/13 07:52 AM
Quality Forests and Foresters of Northern Wisconsin
More inventory of the fine quality hardwoods of Northeast Wisconsin.
A great place to visit, a great place to live and an even better place to grow high quality hardwoods including Red Oak, Sugar Maple, Ash, Yellow Birch, and More.
But watch out for the Hodags in this area.

wildlife management: Timber cruising in NorthEast Wisconsin - 06/06/13 04:30 AM
Timber cruising near Monico, Wisconsin

I always enjoy working in this area of Wisconsin along the Michigan border, the timber is great, the wildlife is plentiful, and the scenery is exceptional.
Here is a photo of one of our young Foresters with his DME, compass, and other gear cruising a stand of high quality Sugar Maple near Monico Wisconsin.

wildlife management: Measuring the Forest in Gogebic County Michigan - 06/04/13 03:44 PM
Measuring the Forest in Gogebic County Michigan

These are a few shots from a recent trip we took to the Northern tip of Michigan for a 400000 acre inventory and appraisal.

Lots of bald eagles up here, but they are generally shy about getting their pictures taken.

The timber in this stand is rather small, but the
quality is consistently rather good, a tribute to the previous corporate owners.

wildlife management: Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestates - 06/03/13 03:49 PM
Bald Eagles Doing Well in the Lakestates
When I was young Bald Eagles were very rare to see, and were nearly extinct throughout the United States.  This was due to a pesticide called DDT, once this was banned, the recovery began.

Now we see Eagles everywhere we go in the Northern States, They are a very hardy bird, enduring harsh weather, eating anything including roadkill and handouts from fishermen. And with a lifespan of over 30 years they have recovered quite nicely.

wildlife management: Camp Visitors near Argonne Wisconsin - 06/02/13 02:50 PM
Camp Visitors near Argonne Wisconsin

I was sitting in my camper doing some paperwork while the other Foresters where out doing some inventory for an audit on a large clients property in the Argonne Wisconsin area when I got a few visitors.
They were very cute and my older son Josh was nice enough to stop in camp and help to send these baby raccoon's back to the forest, after they got their pictures taken.

We are hoping that they found their momma, and not any more camp groceries.

Monico Wisconsin, Trees, Bears, and a few Cranes

Monico, in addition to having some sort of strange multilegged hodag in its park is also the place where we have seen more bears than any other place in Wisconsin.  It seems like every time you stop hiking to do an inventory plot one of these critters jumps up from where it was laying down to let us pass and runs away, while startling the forester as well.

wildlife management: FAQ How do I create a Wildlife Paradise on my Property? - 05/30/13 05:13 PM
How do I create a wildlife paradise on my property?
Like humans most wildlife species are looking for a great place to live, their habitat.
Great wildlife habitat includes a good mix of food, shelter, and water.
The main way forest and wildlife managers create habitat for wildlife is by managing the stages of forest succession.
Forest succession is basically the path that a forest takes from an open field, to young even aged trees, to older uneven aged trees, and finally to a mature climax forest.
Creating various wildlife habitats generally involves harvesting trees, planting trees, … (8 comments)

wildlife management: FAQ Is leaving my woodland alone best for Wildlife & Forest Health? - 05/30/13 04:18 PM
FAQ  Is leaving my woodland alone the best option for Wildlife and Forest Health?
Leaving your forest alone is seldom the best option for either wildlife habitat or a healthy forest.  An unmanaged forest will become stagnant reducing the amount of food for wildlife and crowding out all of the younger trees which are important for the next generation of the forest.   Most wildlife requires a diverse forest with varied ages and types of trees for both food and shelter.  And a healthy sustainable forest requires various ages of trees to enable future generations.
When managing your forest, if you’re interested … (4 comments)

Sometimes Shoes do Grow on Trees

More Strange Stuff You Find In The Woods.
We were on an inventory project in SW Bayfield County, working a late day and set up camp in the dark along a remote roadway.  When I awoke in the morning I was treated to see the largest shoe tree ever.
I have never seen shoes and boots growing on a tree, but if you look at enough forests, you will probably see everything that grows out in the woods.

Hiking the Luna Whitedeer, bringing back Memories of my Early Days

Thirty years ago in my first year in the US Forest Service, I was in charge of a Youth Conservation Corps crew and our main accomplishment for the summer was to construct the Luna Whitedeer trail in the Nicolet National forest.
At the time it was a tremendous amount of sweat and toil scratching this 4 mile trail out to the dense tree roots of Northern

Wisconsin, but it all seemed worth it when I was doing a project near here with my youngest son Nick, and … (8 comments)

UWSP Students Enjoy Tour of Menomonie White Pine Forest

sun, but take only the mature trees, the sick trees, and the trees that have fallen. When you reach the end of the reservation, turn and cut from the setting sun to the rising sun and the trees will last forever”.

Do you Really Save Money When you Do It Yourself? Seldom...

It pays many times over to hire a Forester to manage your timber sale

It really does pay big money to hire a forester

I recently had a man call me and ask for some advice in selling his timber.

A logger had approached him and offered him $5000 for a "selective thinning" of his forest, cutting everything with a 10 inch stump or larger, and he was concerned about how this would look.

wildlife management: Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees - 05/19/13 02:49 PM

Spring and Summer Danger, Oak Wilt can kill your most valuable trees

Oak is one of the highest valued forests for reasons beyond the beauty it adds to Wisconsin woods.  Not only does it produce high-value lumber, which goes into fine furniture and trim, but it is an essential component of wildlife habitats, including that of deer and turkey.
Unfortunately, oak regeneration is surprisingly difficult.  Oak growth declines annually due to old age and disease.  Oak wilt is an aggressive disease that kills thousands of oak trees every year.  Although there is no cure for the disease, … (4 comments)

wildlife management: Odd Stuff Left in the Woods - 05/18/13 04:07 PM
Things you find in the forest

I am accustomed to finding odd things in the forest, often in a place where you feel so remote that humans seldom venture much less leave things behind.

Sometimes it is as simple as an abandoned farmstead or a forgotten maple syrup bucket grown into a tree, and one time while doing a forest inventory in New Mexico I found a Model T car far up in the mountains with trees growing through it.

Today's find was not too dramatic but it did cause me to stop and … (31 comments)

Graduation Day at the Nations Top Forestry School

Tomorrow another group of enthusiastic Forestry and Natural Resource students will be graduating and heading out to save the world, or at least make it run a little better.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources is widely regarded as the nation’s leading undergraduate natural resource program.
The program at UWSP owes much of its success to a hands on approach to learning all aspects of the resource, not just forestry, not just wildlife, not just soils, not just water resources, but an interdisciplinary approach to all of … (14 comments)

wildlife management: Hunters are Looking to Lease Your Forestland - 05/12/13 04:42 PM
ADDITIONAL INCOME AVAILABLE FOR LANDOWNERS IN HUNTING LEASE PROGRAM

—By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife.

Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay.  Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes.  The payments can also go toward funding habitat improvement projects … (5 comments)

wildlife management: Stolen Trees are Expensive Trees - 05/01/13 04:55 PM
This past week my son Nick who recently earned his Forestry degree conducted what we refer to as a Timber Trespass Appraisal.
A Timber Trespass Appraisal, is basically an appraisal of the remaining stumps after somebody trespasses on your land and cuts your trees.
After measuring and recording the condition of the stumps we then go out in the remaining forest and measure comparable trees that come close in species, size and condition to the remaining stumps.  The comparable trees are measured and valued in an effort to place a value on the trees that were removed from our clients … (9 comments)

wildlife management: Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber? Q&A#4 - 03/29/13 05:04 PM
Why Should I Hire A Forester To Sell My Timber?  Q&A#4
Over the past 25 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning the answer to this question the hard way.
Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out.  They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process.
