From a Serious Skeptic of Forestry to one of our Biggest Fans
Yesterday, I gave a little background on a colorful character named Ed Harriman, my grandpa, now today I will tell about one of my first clients after starting Woodland Management Service 26 years ago.
During and after college I spent some time working for the US Forest Service in different parts of the country, like Northern Idaho, New Mexico, and flying all around the west fighting occasional forest fires.

What Is My Tree Worth? The answer to this often asked question depends on many variables:
The most important of which is; what is this tree’s purpose?
Is it a forest tree whose highest use is timber production? Is it a yard tree? Is it a park tree? Is it part of a small recreational woodlot?
What type/specie of tree is it?
Some trees make excellent lumber Some make excellent pulp Some make beautiful Christmas trees Others make valuable yard trees But generally one type is not the best tree for all purposes.

175 Thousand Acres of Forested Wildlife habitat can be found in this beautiful Central Wisconsin County.
Though the Oaks here are not spectacular, the pines are exceptional.
One delightful remnant of a foresters advice from the mid part of the last century stands out with spectacular results.
That bit of advice that he gave to all who planted pines here was to mix a little bit of White Pine in with all of the Red Pines that were being planted.

I like this challenge on finding gems to add value to a property.
This has been a pet peeve of mine for years, agents who are too lazy, uneducated, or unskilled to do their jobs and actually SELL the property.
Many are merely order takers and tour guides. Comparing all the three bedrooms homes in town and putting a price on it that they think will make it sell quickly with little effort.

Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Certain Starvation
This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings. Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this.
The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest.

Nick and I recently attended workshop relating certified forest products. This workshop was with the American Tree Farm program. Nick was becoming trained to do Tree Farm Certification audits for the first time and I was just renewing my certification.
The lands that we audit for this program are in the SFI, Sustainable Forestry Initiative program which is one of many programs that assure retailers that the wood, paper, or whatever forest products were grown and harvested in an environmentally sound and sustainable way.

Turkeys in the Wisconsin Snow
The snow is getting deep in Wisconsin and the Turkeys are seeking hot and cold lunch handouts.
This time of year our turkeys are giving up on digging up acorns from the forest floor and seeking a little help from the humans.
In many areas of Wisconsin our turkeys partake in what wildlife biologists refer to as the “hot lunch program”, which basically means that they follow behind the manure spreaders of area farmers.

I was watching Larry the cable guy on the History channel a while ago. They were up in Alaska trying to use a moose call to bring in some moose, and they were unsuccessful until one of the researchers brought out a chainsaw and started it up, and the moose came running in.
The head Wildlife Specialist at Woodland Management Service, Jesse Kulesa, always tells his clients that the best thing they can do to attract most wildlife is to do some cutting.

Our earliest Explorers were excited to find a narrow strip of land where the current city of Portage is located, this portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers was significant since it joined the Great Lakes and the North Atlantic with the Mississippi and the Caribbean.
