wildlife management: From a Serious Skeptic of Forestry to one of our Biggest Fans
- 02/28/14 10:41 AM
From a Serious Skeptic of Forestry to one of our Biggest Fans Yesterday, I gave a little background on a colorful character named Ed Harriman, my grandpa, now today I will tell about one of my first clients after starting Woodland Management Service 26 years ago. During and after college I spent some time working for the US Forest Service in different parts of the country, like Northern Idaho, New Mexico, and flying all around the west fighting occasional forest fires. My last job before returning to Wisconsin was in Michigan where I was working as a Procurement Forester, and getting

wildlife management: What Is My Tree Worth?
- 02/22/14 03:40 PM
What Is My Tree Worth? The answer to this often asked question depends on many variables: The most important of which is; what is this tree’s purpose? Is it a forest tree whose highest use is timber production? Is it a yard tree? Is it a park tree? Is it part of a small recreational woodlot? What type/specie of tree is it? Some trees make excellent lumber Some make excellent pulp Some make beautiful Christmas trees Others make valuable yard trees But generally one type is not the best tree for all purposes.

View Waushara County Wisconsin in a larger map Waushara County Wisconsin, Oaks, Pines, and Wildlife 175 Thousand Acres of Forested Wildlife habitat can be found in this beautiful Central Wisconsin County. Though the Oaks here are not spectacular, the pines are exceptional. One delightful remnant of a foresters advice from the mid part of the last century stands out with spectacular results. That bit of advice that he gave to all who planted pines here was to mix a little bit of White Pine in with all of the Red Pines that were being planted. The result of planting this

wildlife management: Loggers Love DIY Forest Landowners
- 02/21/14 10:27 AM
Loggers Love DIY Forest Landowners Over the past 25 years I cannot count the number of clients who have come to me after learning this lesson the hard way. Many people feel that they can do the job themselves, or they have a friend or relative who is a logger and offers to help them out. They all end up gaining a small fraction of what their timber is worth and to add insult to injury their forest is seriously degraded in the process. A forester knows how to; Expertly market your timber to get

wildlife management: Earn Your Commission, Learn to SELL the attributes and dreams!
- 02/17/14 03:33 PM
Earn Your Commission, Learn to SELL the attributes and dreams! I like this challenge on finding gems to add value to a property. This has been a pet peeve of mine for years, agents who are too lazy, uneducated, or unskilled to do their jobs and actually SELL the property. Many are merely order takers and tour guides. Comparing all the three bedrooms homes in town and putting a price on it that they think will make it sell quickly with little effort. The only selling involved is in getting the seller to take a lower price or putting thousands of

wildlife management: Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Certain Starvation
- 02/16/14 02:25 PM
Deer Yards, Inadequate Hunts, Deep Snows, Certain Starvation This is a picture of a Deer Yard, notice the well pruned trees up as high as a deer can reach and lack of young seedlings. Generally when the snows get too deep for deer to travel they will yard up in a place like this. The canopy of the Hemlocks in this photo create what we call thermal cover which is generally 10-20 degrees warmer than in the open or in a hardwood forest. Unfortunately unless there is a clear cut right next to one of these deer yards, the meager vegetation within

Certified Forest Products for a Healthy Environment for All Nick and I recently attended workshop relating certified forest products. This workshop was with the American Tree Farm program. Nick was becoming trained to do Tree Farm Certification audits for the first time and I was just renewing my certification. The lands that we audit for this program are in the SFI, Sustainable Forestry Initiative program which is one of many programs that assure retailers that the wood, paper, or whatever forest products were grown and harvested in an environmentally sound and sustainable way. The greatest demand for SFI certification in Wisconsin

wildlife management: LEASING HUNTING LAND, INCOME OPPORTUNITY, WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TOOL
- 02/09/14 12:27 PM
LEASING HUNTING LAND, INCOME OPPORTUNITY FOR LANDOWNERS, WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS, AND GREAT LAND FOR HUNTERS. —By leasing out their land, woodland owners may be able to profit from the rich tradition of hunting that exists in Wisconsin. An untapped source of income could exist on property that sustains wildlife. Having exclusive access to private land during hunting season is a price that many hunters are willing to pay. Leasing out deer hunting rights will not only increase a hunter’s chance of success, but the lease payments could be enough to cover landowners’ property taxes. The

wildlife management: Turkeys in the Wisconsin Snow
- 02/05/14 01:56 PM
Turkeys in the Wisconsin Snow The snow is getting deep in Wisconsin and the Turkeys are seeking hot and cold lunch handouts. This time of year our turkeys are giving up on digging up acorns from the forest floor and seeking a little help from the humans. In many areas of Wisconsin our turkeys partake in what wildlife biologists refer to as the “hot lunch program”, which basically means that they follow behind the manure spreaders of area farmers. A lot of nutrients are left behind in the grains that pass through cattle and turkeys are more than happy to

wildlife management: Wildlife Management with a Chainsaw
- 02/04/14 03:12 PM
Wildlife Habitat Improvement with a Chainsaw I was watching Larry the cable guy on the History channel a while ago. They were up in Alaska trying to use a moose call to bring in some moose, and they were unsuccessful until one of the researchers brought out a chainsaw and started it up, and the moose came running in. The head Wildlife Specialist at Woodland Management Service, Jesse Kulesa, always tells his clients that the best thing they can do to attract most wildlife is to do some cutting. Having a winter timber sale or improvement
