winter fun: Merrill Winterfest Sled Dog Race January 24-25, 2015 - 01/20/15 10:43 AM
Merrill Winterfest Sled Dog Race January 24-25, 2015
So many great things to love about Winter in the Northwoods and some of the best are those that we can enjoy with our dogs.
This weekend some dog lovers will be celebrating in a big way near Merrill Wisconsin when the Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club hosts the Merrill Winterfest Sled Dog Races.
There will be many categories and something for everyone with 4, 6, and 10 dog sled races along with 1 and 2 dog Skijoring races.

winter fun: Humor on a Brisk Wisconsin day - 01/08/15 12:33 PM
A bit of Humor on a Brisk Wisconsin day.
As we enjoy another brisk day in the office this week with occassional rounds to the rentals to thaw out a pipe or two my wife sent me this cute little cold weather comparison.
Amazingly the part attributed to Wisconsinites is not that far off on a few of the points.  We did actually go out to the garage and find our winter jackets this week, and yes when the temperatures hit the 50's in the spring you will find a few sunbathers up near campus.

winter fun: At Least Feet Will Stay Dry Today, nice to have winter back again. - 11/14/14 08:40 PM
Well At Least Your Feet Will Stay Dry Today.
Last week the temps were a little bit warmer and I was hearing reports from the woods of frequent boot and sock changes in an effort to avoid frost bitten feet.
Well this week the temps have dropped a bit and now the Foresters are a little more comfortable and dry, especially those with good jackets and beards, but we are hearing more complaints from the equipment.
These are those first days of nippy weather that reveal weak batteries and condensation in your paint cans.
So far nobody has been stranded with a … (17 comments)

winter fun: Dreams can be dashed, and achieved when you least expect them too - 03/11/14 03:40 PM
Its Been a Rough Week Up North, Dreams can be dashed when you least expect them, and they can be achieved when you least expect them too.
Though we have had a surplus of snow in the Midwest and the Northeast and cold temps throughout the lower 48 states, that has not been the case in Alaska.
Far too many warm days have led to very poor snow conditions, melty rivers and the Bearing Sea is also a bit melty.
The dogs on the Iditarod did not care to much about the lack of snow, they thought it was like fall … (11 comments)

winter fun: 69 Teams of Athletes Heading Across our 49th State Tonight - 03/03/14 12:20 PM

69 Teams of Athletes Heading Across our 49th State Tonight.
Though much of Alaska is suffering from something we have not experienced in our part of the country, a very poor winter, the teams are excited anyway.
The joy in the faces of these athletes as they compete is something to be marveled at.
They are very happy doing what they do, which is to run, eat, and wait to be petted and served by the people who work for them.
69 teams of these championship athletes took off in a frenzy from Willow Alaska yesterday heading for Nome where … (10 comments)

winter fun: Skijoring, Flying Through the Snow with a Friend - 02/18/14 01:42 PM

Skijoring, Flying Through the Snow with a Friend.
When I was young a lot of my friends spent a lot of time enjoying winter fun on their snowmobiles, but I was saving every dime for college so I invested in something a whole lot less expensive, a pair of cross country skis.
I bought the skis for transportation, to get around quickly on my trapline and for ice fishing and hunting, but I soon grew to love the thrill of flying across the fields and through the woods at tremendous speeds. And I took pride in being faster than … (9 comments)

winter fun: Jack and Snow - 02/11/14 03:50 PM
 Jack and Snow
No I am not talking about some cocktail enjoyed in the Boreal States, although I would not be surprised if one or more of these do exist.
What I am talking about is the obsession that my friend Jack has with snow. And I think that it is starting to irritate the rest of the dogs, who enjoy snow, but are not obsessed with it.
All day today and just about every day that I have been in the office this week, Jack has been begging to go out and play in the yard.
So I leave … (17 comments)

winter fun: I like a Snow Day! - 01/05/14 02:07 PM
I like a Snow Day!
I like a snow day especially when I am not stranded out in the woods somewhere, but even then it can be a little exciting or at least adventurous.
When my wife Sally mentioned on Friday that the weather was going to get dangerously cold by Sunday and continue into mid week, I was not too alarmed, I was planning to be in the office on Monday anyway.
So I announced to the entire crew that this would be a good week to enjoy some heat in the office and catch up on some paperwork, with the … (18 comments)

winter fun: Winter Wonder Land - 01/05/14 11:37 AM

As we all set into a few days of hibernation and only venture out to fix essentials, it is nice to be reminded what a great winter wonderland we live in up North.
Thanks for the reminder Noah!
OK I have been complaining about how bad the weather is here in Chicago area and Evanston IL. I spent a couple of days hiding out because the snow kept coming down and it was really cold with no sun shining. I got cabin fever and had places to go and people to see.
Today the sun was out but it was still cold. I ventured out in … (2 comments)

winter fun: Perfect Baltimore Snow Day - 12/15/13 08:15 AM

Winter is a magical time in Northern places, and Margaret had taken some time to capture a little of this magic for us this week.
I hope you enjoy her pictures and slide-show as much as I did.
Perfect Baltimore Snow Day

There are some people who say there is nothing perfect about any kind of a snow day. But today was a perfect Baltimore snow day.

The snow started early in the morning, schools were closed and the streets were already salted. Temperatures were above freezing and driving was no problem.
The absolute sheer beauty of snow in … (1 comments)
