It's one of those marketing sayings that has many interpetations, sort of like how the 80/20 rule has become the rule for everything in life. That doesn't make it less true. 
I recently wrote two posts that discuss how to get buyers or sellers. Someone asked which idea works best. I say, "Let 100 flowers bloom". Plant 100 seeds and collect data. Analyze it. For example, if you put an ad in the paper, how many responses do you get and how many of those that respond turn into clients. I've gotten glimmers of a type of marketing recently that really interested me. It's called Funnel Marketing, and it seems to make a lot of sense.
The concept of funnel marketing is fairly simple. Basically you begin by giving away free samples of your products or services. Some of the prospects who sample your wares will then make a small commitment to you. Some of those prospects will then make a larger commitment to you. This morning I commented on SPAM that I received (I made it members only if you are reading this and you aren't a member).  There was a comment left that basically said, like it or not, SPAM is here to stay. We are all marketers here. Every one of us. I'm really hoping that anyone who spams reads this. Because SPAM, as we all know, is unwanted.
