I attended the annual VAR and Richmond Association of Realtors VRLTA update seminar yesterday given by attorney Chip Dicks.
VAR property managers are fortunate to have this provided every spring after the VA legislative session by Chip who actually WRITES the legislation on behalf of VAR, property managers and real estate agents. Although I do not have my owner properties under the Virginia RESIDENTIAL Landlord Tenant Act statutes, the information provided in invaluable and the classroom was PACKED. This appeared in my e-mail inbox today.....Important correction to new laws article and poster in Commonwealth magazine There's an error in the materials about Virginia's new real estate laws in the May/June 2010 Commonwealth magazine. It might seem... This is NOT the first time this has happened.....and it SHOULD be the LAST Time.  I think it is time that VAR stops it's monthly publication and use the money more WISELY by directing it toward EDUCATION and MEMBER SERVICES.  This magazine is almost 70% ADS for VAR and NAR affiliates - some of which do not even offer services in VA. I've just received my notice that VAR is again sponsoring a full day seminar on the VRLTA and changes to the Virginia landlord-tenant code from this year's legislature. 
There will be three such seminars - in Richmond, in Tidewater and in NoVA....anyone who has rental property or has agents in their office who fancy themselves as wanting to be property managers should urge them to sign up early and take these courses.  Last year's seminar had to be moved there were so many attendees....

In his "message from the Chair"...Schaefer Ogelsby mentions that at the VAR Property Managers Coalition in Natural Bridge last October, he realized that many VA property managers do not know the state laws regarding smoke detectors.....the following is the code section he references
 § 15.2-922. Smoke detectors in certain buildings.
Any locality, notwithstanding any contrary provision of law, general or special, may by ordinance require that smoke detectors be installed in the following structures or buildings: (i) any building containing one or more dwelling units, (ii) any hotel or motel regularly used or offered for, or intended to be used to provide overnight … (3 comments)
