bodega bay: An Active Rain Audience I Hadn't Anticipated: Historians - 08/18/13 07:23 AM

Twice in the last week, I have been contacted through Active Rain by Genealogists and Historians who have read my posts. Just by blogging about local oddities or historical structures, I've caught the eye of Internet researchers who are seeking more information about an area they are not or no longer a part of.
One reader is searching for more information about the past owner of The Tides Wharf in Bodega Bay. The Tides was one of the sets of Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie "The Birds". Several times I have posted photos of "The Birds" location sets (for example … (24 comments)

bodega bay: Commercial Crab Season Opens This Week in Sonoma County - 11/12/12 07:46 AM

Commercial Crab Season Opens This Week in Sonoma County
Crab. Yum. Every year I look forward to the week when commercial crab season opens. I'm kind of a weenie when it comes to cooking them, I'd rather let someone else do that chore. But my mouth waters when I think of the first crab of the season that I can buy and bring home.
Crab Louie, crab tacos, crab omelets, crab dip, crab cakes ... the possibilities are endless! If a price can be agreed upon between the fishermen and merchants by Thursday, we should be able to … (5 comments)

bodega bay: Tall Ships in Bodega Bay - 04/10/12 09:47 AM

We had a real treat this past week in Bodega Bay, when Tall Ships based out of Grays Harbor, Washington, paid us a visit. According to the local paper, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain have never been here before and their presence was an instant hit. Actually ... too much of a hit.
Thousands of curious locals descended upon the tiny hamlet of Bodega Bay to get a closer look. Hundreds of folks had to be turned away due to lack of parking and lack of hours in the day. I got lucky and took advantage of a … (18 comments)

bodega bay: 4th of July Celebrations in Sonoma County - 07/01/11 04:35 AM

Here comes a three day weekend with 4th of July Celebrations starting on Saturday and ending on Monday. Your biggest worry for the weekend is to decide what you are NOT going to be able to do because there are SO many choices.

Saturday, July 2nd
Monte Rio Independence Day Celebration.  Now this is kind of fun. There is a water carnival boat parade, a BBQ and a fireworks show. For more info on locations and times, go to www.russianriver.com. bodega bay: Tippi Hedren at The Tides Wharf in Bodega Bay, CA - 05/27/11 09:05 AM

Tippi Hedren will once again grace us with her presence at The Tides Wharf in Bodega Bay, CA this Memorial Day Weekend. The Tides Wharf was one of the locations for the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" in the early 1960's.
Visitors come from all over the world to see landmarks from the movie including the Church and Schoolhouse in the town of Bodega and The Tides Wharf and Bodega Harbor in the town of Bodega Bay.
The Tides Wharf Restaurant and parking lot were used for the gas station, cafe and boat docking scenes.
When the (then) owner … (14 comments)

bodega bay: Hole in the Head - Bodega Bay, CA - 05/16/11 11:15 AM

I'll be the first to admit this photo doesn't look like much, but it's what you don't see that speaks louder than words.
What looks like a small round pond, started out as a man-made hole that spreads 142 feet across and 120 feet down. You could lower a 10 story building into this hole if it wasn't filled with rain water.
This hole, known as "Hole in the Head", was not dug to provide the public with a place to swim. This was going to be the location of a nuclear power plant. The utility company behind it … (35 comments)

bodega bay: Things are looking crabby in Bodega Bay, CA - 11/13/10 04:34 AM
When folks visit Bodega Bay, CA they are usually trying to find all of the film locations from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". They can be found, they just don't look much the same anymore. The Tides Restaurant and Wharf was completely rebuilt in 1990 and has no semblance whatsoever of the film version in 1963.
But this week, all of the activity is centered around Spud Point Marina. Commercial crab fishing starts Sunday and the word is that the Dungeness crab are plentiful and big this year. Sport fishermen got a head start last week, and they have been hauling in … (18 comments)
