atlantic beach fl: Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant, Neptune Beach, FL - 03/07/13 06:33 AM
I stopped into Mezza Luna the other day, a wonderful Italian eatery in Neptune Beach, really because I had to pick up something next door. I hadn't been in to see them for a while, and was pleasantly surprised to see they had made some changes to the place: they used to have two entrances (odd for a restaurant), on that opened into the parking lot (shared with other establishments & City Hall), and one that opened onto First Street.
More patrons were coming in from the parking lot, so they decided to close the other entrance, which allows them the … (2 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Jacksonville Beach, Fourth of July Fireworks Return! - 03/04/13 09:55 PM
I know for many the Fourth of July is far off, and makes one think of ice cream, and the summer heat....yes, even here in Jacksonville Beach, FL we are chilly (although not mitten-state chilly!), and this is great news: we will have fireworks this Fourth of July.
I blogged about the lack of fireworks in 2012, mainly due to safety concerns: Jacksonville Beach is the largest of the beach communities, and we get the most visitors from other parts of Jacksonville, as well as tourists.  Traffic, and public safety comes to mind when you host a fireworks display, and viewers … (5 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Mayport, Florida is Preferred Location for Navy LCS Ships - 02/28/13 11:59 PM
Great news for our area: the US Navy agrees our facilities at Mayport, FL are the best choice for the newest littoral combat ships.
Our location on the eastern seaboard, further south than Norfolk, is awesome for deployment into southern waters, and if you know anyone who has served in the Navy, you know that this port is one of the top two requests (second to San Diego) for personnel.

atlantic beach fl: Jacksonville & Maserati - A Winning Combination! - 02/28/13 07:20 AM
Maserati is coming to Jacksonville!
If you think of early Jacksonville, and by that I mean pre-1996 when the Jaguars came to town, you may think I'm CRAZY to say this is a winnning combination.
When I first moved here in 1990, there was not quite the array of restaurants, and shopping opportunities that we have now: Louis Vuitton, Mayor's, & Tiffany at Town Center; Capital Grille & Ruth Chris' have locations here as well.
With the attention the NFL has brought to our area, what could be next but a Maserati dealership?
And, if you are STILL doubtful, I beseech … (3 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Annual Springing The Blues Festival, Jacksonville Beach, FL - 02/24/13 09:48 AM
If you have been in the past, or have not been at all, this is a wonderful Blues festival that comes through Jacksonville Beach annually. It is free to the public, there are many different vendors & of course, food and beverages are available.
How many blues festivals (or any musical genre, for that matter) have you attended where you can enjoy the sun, the ocean, and great music all in one location??

atlantic beach fl: Restaurant Changes, Jacksonville Beach, FL - 02/22/13 12:37 AM
As a fan of dining out, I'm always interested in new restaurants opening at the beaches, and thought I'd share a few of the recent changes we're seeing:
Mambo's Cuban Bistro has remodeled, and reopened as Cocina Latin American Fusion. I've eaten at Mambo's the food was good, so this location on 3rd Street should do well with little menu competition. There is rooftop parking in this building, so don't be put off by any parking challenges on the street. La Nopalera is now open a bit further south on 3rd Street; they have fabulous Mexican cuisine, and have 9 other … (2 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Live At The Beach? 26.2 With Donna This Weekend Need To Know - 02/15/13 02:30 AM
Ok, so you've lived in Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach or Ponte Vedra Beach for the past few years, and you consider yourself an "old hand" at how to navigate the roads during our annual 26.2 With Donna Marathon.
Not so fast, partner.
There are some changes this year that will impact the beaches communities a bit more: the race start is at ATP NOT at Mayo Clinic, and roads may be impacted for 7 hours starting the 7:30am start time.
You can read the full article here for more info and the course specifics: Read more at Jacksonville.com: http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/2013-02-15/story/262-donna-live-beach-heres-what-you-need-know#ixzz2Kzdjjr15

atlantic beach fl: Beaches Vs. Jacksonville Regarding Landfill Fees - 02/13/13 08:14 PM
It's tough to believe sometimes, but the Beaches communities of Jacksonville, FL (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach) are part of Jacksonville in terms of taxes and services, yet phsically separated from Jacksonville by the Intracoastal Waterway (locally, called "The Ditch").
City Councils, Mayors and others involved in the process have developed an inter-local agreement to spell out how & what services are provided, and the fee structure. At times of lower tax revenue, this agreement is re-visited (possibly at other times as well, but my memory seems to think typically when tax revenue is lower this happens), and debates arise.

As many of the local residents are aware, next Sunday is the annual 26.2 With Donna marathon to finish breast cancer. This wonderful event brings thousands of runners together to run the full or half marathon. Many run in honor of a friend, sister, mother, aunt or daughter who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Many local roads will be closed at the beaches during the event next Sunday: here is a concise list of what roads will be closed.
Road Closures:
The eastbound lanes of J. Turner Butler Boulevard (JTB/SR 202) will be closed from Hodges Boulevard to A1A from 4:30 a.m. … (1 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Warm Weather Gardening, Jacksonville Beach, FL - 02/09/13 12:19 AM
My apologies yet again to those of you in mitten states, and currently feeling the effects of Winter Storm Nemo (did we just start naming winter storms this past year?).  Our current temps are a bit chilly for us here in Jacksonville Beach, FL, but probably warmer than the average.
I've already got weeds in my yard, so when I saw this, I wanted to share with other Southern gardeners, so you can be proactive about the weed situations we can get here in the South.
We have had more rainfall than normal (our winters are typically our drier months), Also, … (2 comments)

atlantic beach fl: Sunrise, Atlantic Beach, Florida - 02/08/13 04:59 AM

I was fortunate enough to be a "Plus 1" at an event last night at One Ocean in Atlantic Beach, that included a night at the upscale property.
For those of you have traveled here, One Ocean is the former Sea Turtle, and the renovation includes a wonderful spa, and a fabulous restaurant, Azurea.
This was the sunrise this morning as I woke up at 6am in my oceanfront room!

atlantic beach fl: Jacksonville Jaguars Reveal New Logo - 02/05/13 05:34 AM
The Jacksonville Jaguars are not wasting any time with making changes. From a new General Manager to a new head coach, and now a new logo, the team is ready to greet the new season with a new energy, and optimism, that many of us had hoped for when Shad Khan purchased the team. I believe new ticket prices, and new uniforms are on the way as well - but for now, here is the new logo:

atlantic beach fl: Beaches Green Market, Neptune Beach, FL - 02/01/13 10:21 PM
I have watched this market grow over the years, and with the increased interest in local produce, it's nice to see the market is thriving now.
The market is open every Saturday from 2-5pm, and regulars know to get there right at opening time, as produce in high demand goes quickly.
On January 12, they hit an attendance record of  1,278, up approximately 243 shoppers over the prior record of 1,035.
If you are in our area on a Saturday, please stop and visit, and support locally grown produce.

atlantic beach fl: Can I Go With You? - 01/31/13 09:33 PM
I'm was packing recently for a long weekend jaunt with friends, somewhere warm & sunny, where we can swim in the ocean. My apologies to those in mitten states who think Florida is such a place at this time of year: currently in Jacksonville Beach, FL it is 40 something degrees, which is chilly for us.
My youngest cat, Stoli, has never done this before, and I *hope* this is his embracing  of me going on trips, and not the start of his recognizing the suitcase means I'm leaving..

atlantic beach fl: Oyster Shell Recycling Project, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL - 01/27/13 04:18 AM
I love reading about recyling, so this naturally caught my eye: oyster shelly recycling!
I've seen my friends on Nantucket reuse clam shells by running them through the dishwasher for more clams casino, but this is a slightly different type of recycling.
This project can help protect our beaches from erosion, safeguard archaeological sites, and keep those shells from the garbage dump. How cool!

atlantic beach fl: Check Out The Night Sky! - 01/22/13 04:39 AM
Tomorrow night, Wednesday, the Public Trust Environmental Legal Institute will host a free gathering at the Neptune Beach Library. The main topic will be Orion, a wintertime constellation. At the end of the meeting, you will have learned more about both the constellation, as well as the mythology surrounding Orion.
I would love to be there, as I love watching the night sky, but will be in Orlando for Florida Realtors convention.

atlantic beach fl: PhotoJax 2013 - 01/19/13 11:32 PM
A friend is going to attend at least one of these events, and I would love to go, but will be at Florida Realtor's Convention this week. If you have a chance, you might want to stop and check out some cool photography.
I love photography, having been raised on Ansel Adam's black & white outdoor photos, and love to see what fascinates others - those of you who have seen my posts know I tend towards nature scenes, and more specifically sunsets & sunrises.
Cool community event - does your community have something like this?
