florida: Pre Plans: My Personal Plans Winter 2013 - 11/30/13 05:52 AM
I just wrote my business pre plan post, so let's just roll into the personal one!
I've got a pretty solid work/life balance, I've fought hard for it. I tend to work M-F 8a-6pm.  I don't work many weekends, and if I do, they are primarily Saturdays only, I take Sundays off.
So, moving into the holiday season, I would like to focus on a few more areas:
1) Working out. For YEARS I worked out in the morning. The last two or so, I've morphed into working out two weeknights with a group & a trainer. I love wokring out … (21 comments)

florida: Gaming Centers Banned in Florida - 04/10/13 10:25 PM
Coming home for Tallahassee and Great American Realtor Days yesterday, we read this on the bus with mixed reactions.
Some were bemoaning the loss of 1000 businesses statewide, while others saw this move as a positive step.
However you feel about it, to me, the truth remains that this operations are a waste of time, energy and people's money. Yes, as businesses they pay rent, and employ people, but so do strip clubs, and I don't care for them any more than gaming centers.

florida: Senate Passes $74.3 Billion Budget, Benefits First Coast - 04/10/13 09:21 AM
Having just spent the past 36 hours in Tallahassee, meeting with our state legislators to discuss key points (affordable housing, property insurance & sales tax on commercial leases), I read this article with great interest.
Some key projects that are getting funding include:
St. John's River restoration - key for our entire state, really, as there was the concept that other parts of Florida could tap the St. John's River for their fresh water source.
Grant money for historic preservation projects in St. John's county, which is certainly necessary.
Another highlight includes funding for the St. John's River Ferry, which is … (3 comments)

florida: Florida Mulls Gaming Centers - 03/15/13 11:45 AM
The local headlines this week have not been great:
Allied Veterans Operations raided, 57 arrest warrants issued. Jennifer Carroll resigns due to past (current?) relationship with Allied Veterans It's not a surprise today's is that Florida lawmakers are considering changes to these so-called gaming centers. You may have seen them advertised as internet cafes (which I wondered about).  I don't know anyone personally who visits these places, but it seems many people do.
Have you been to Vegas? Any Caribbean destination with a casino? It's manufactured to seem glamorous, and exciting, and all the opportunity!

florida: Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, Florida Farmer's Market - 02/26/12 12:06 AM
Nocatee is fabulous master planned community about 8 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. The community is planned around conservation, with plenty of green space and parks for residents to enjoy.
A monthly farmer's market also boasts more than just a typical Farmer's Market: last weekend, several animal rescue groups brought their dogs and cats available for adoption.
A unique approach, and since the Farmer's Market is dog friendly anyway, a fabulous place to help find forever homes for adoptable critters.

florida: NEFAR January Real Estate Sales Announced, Jacksonville, FL - 02/23/12 08:39 PM
Positive trends continue: closed and pending sales increase, share of lender-mediated sales decrease, supply very close to balanced. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Northeast Florida Association of Realtors (NEFAR) announces real estate market statistics for January 2012. Statistics encompass both single-family residential and condo sales. Historically a slow month for real estate activity, January's pending sales nonetheless jumped nearly 23 percent year over year (from 1,250 in 2011 to 1,534 in 2012). Closed sales were on a different track, coming in at 977 as opposed to last January's 1,042. Traditional and lender-mediated sales were a nearly even mix, with 489 traditional … (3 comments)

florida: John Tucillo, Florida Realtors Chief Economist at NEFAR Luncheon, 9/23/11 - 09/24/11 12:25 AM
I was fortunate today to hear John Tucillo, Chief Economist for Florida Realtors, speak at our luncheon today.
It's amazing how much the news sources can skew data and statistics.
For example, Mr. Tucillo shared the following little nuggets with the audience:
August 2010 - August 2011: home sales (units) increased 10% statewide in Florida, and 13% in Northeast Florida January 2011 - August 2011: home sales (units) increased 33% statewide in Florida and 53% in Northeast Florida The real focus should be on the increasing units sold, because that is a better indicator, more reliable indicator of market stability than … (6 comments)

Homestead Exemption Application Now Online For Duval Count
The Duval County Property Appraiser's Office now offers an online method to apply for homestead exemption, saving homeowners time and money.
Previously, new homeowners had to either visit the Appraiser's office downtown or submit applications by fax or mail with additional attachments.
The intuitive application asks necessary questions based on responses.
The homestead exemption is a benefit for Florida homeowners which can provide up to $50,000* off the assessed value of a home; lowering property taxes. Once in place, the homestead exemption triggers another state law which limits the increase … (2 comments)

florida: Smoky Weather Questions & Answers - 06/17/11 01:36 AM
June 16, 2011 - 02:59am
Smoke Q&A: What you need to know about you, your pets and your car Here are some general questions and answers for those of us living in smoky climes these days -
If it's smoky outside, what should I do, health wise?  Stay away from the outside. Limit your exposure by staying indoors, with the AC. Don't have AC? Look for alternative places for shelter, which could include museums, libraries, the movies, or family. If I have asthma, how concerned should I be?  Keep your rescue inhalers close by and expect to use them more … (5 comments)

florida: Florida, Not Just The Sunshine State! - 06/15/11 05:56 AM
I'm not REALLY poking fun, nor dismissing anyone who has had to evacuate or has lost property, or god forbid family in these fires, but really just trying to educate the public as to HOW many fires we currently have in The Sunshine Fire State these days.
Jacksonville, FL is covered in smoke and ash today, and visibility is tough; it's tougher still for young, elderly and any one with breathing disorders to be outside for any period of time. The Governer has issued a state of emergency, and I saw our local Smokecast on the weather this morning - and … (5 comments)
