eureka: A 'galley' kitchen remodel - 10/31/11 05:50 AM
If you are considering doing a kitchen remodel yourself and you have a 'galley' kitchen, you may want to consider doing half the kitchen at a time.
One of the biggest problems with a kitchen remodel is the loss of the kitchen while the remodel is going on.  In a smaller home with a galley kitchen, the loss is major.
Leave the side that contains the sink until last.  Refrigerators may be moved around in most cases and plugged into another outlet.  Electric stove are easy to unplug and move, if necessary build a platform on wheels and place your electric … (13 comments)

eureka: Destroy your old hard drive - 10/31/11 05:44 AM
If you will be getting rid of your old computer in the future, 'destroy' the hard drive when you do.  Destroying the hard drive is the only way to make sure that information on it will not be restored and used.
Removing a hard drive from a desk top computer is not a big challenge.  Make sure it is discounted from a power source before removing it.  If in doubt ask someone for help.  It is a matter of removing the cover, removing a few screws and unplugging it.
Destroy the hard drive yourself or have a trusted friend do it.  … (10 comments)

eureka: Preparing your home for sale starts with the closets - 10/31/11 05:36 AM
If you are preparing your home for sale, take a good look at your closets before listing your property for sale.
1. First, empty them out!  Keep only the items you will need on a daily basis.  The rest, pack up and move to a storage area.
2. Do they need painting or other repairs?  If so get it done before listing.  Don't forget to paint any shelves if they need it.
3. Do the doors work properly?  If the doors 'drag' on the carpet have them shortened.  If the doors are folding, make sure they open smoothly and with little effort.  … (8 comments)

eureka: Installing new kitchen cabinets? - 10/31/11 05:29 AM
If you are planning a remodel of your kitchen and will be placing new kitchen cabinets, this tip might make your life easier.
Placing the upper cabinets can be a challenge if you are working alone.  Holding them in place and attaching them is almost impossible.
One trick is to build a stand to support the upper cabinet while you install it.  The stand needs to be a little shorter that the difference between the cabinet height and the wall height.  You can slide shims under the cabinet for a tight fit with the ceiling after you have it placed on the stand.  … (3 comments)

eureka: Considering 'Carpet' replacement? - 10/31/11 05:18 AM
If you are considering replacing the carpet in a room that has outside access, consider placing tile, instead of carpet, at the entryway.  There are two very good reasons!
Carpet collects moisture that come in on shoes.  Also, when you open the door on a rainy day moisture also comes in and lands on the carpet.   There is only one place for the moisture to go.  Into the wood sub flooring!  With a tile entryway the moisture will sit on top of the tile and evaporate.  And you will not have to be concerned with replacing the sub floor at the entryway … (4 comments)

eureka: You will also be 'selling' your garage! - 10/31/11 04:58 AM
If you will be placing your home on the market for sale, remember that your garage is an important part of your home.  Buyers will want to see it and it should be an appealing part of your home.
While your home is on the market for sale, do not use your garage to store packing boxes, they belong in a storage area.
Items that need to be in the garage, like your children's bicycles, need to be out of the way and neatly stored in a rack or hung from hooks.
Make sure any exposed electrical wiring is 'to code' … (5 comments)

eureka: Where is your 'crawl space' entrance? - 10/31/11 04:52 AM
The entrance to the area under your home is very important and should not be concealed!
An exterior entrance needs to be in plain sight, clear of trash, weeds etc. and securely covered.  The cover needs to be tight but easy to remove in an emergency.  If the cover is loose or the entrance is left uncovered animals will enter and you do not want to deal with skunks etc. under the house. The area around the entrance needs to be free of any objects that make entry difficult.  Workers need plenty of room to enter, have tools available, run … (5 comments)

eureka: Need additional space in your kitchen? - 10/31/11 04:41 AM
If you are planning a kitchen remodel, one of the first things to consider is how much is the kitchen used.  If the kitchen is the focal point of your home and is cramped and crowded, you may want to consider enlarging it.
Where is the additional room coming from?
One choice would be an addition, however this could be costly.  Another idea is to convert space from an adjoining room that does not receive the same level of use.  Does the family room, living room, dining room adjoin the kitchen?  Is there limited use of the room?  Give it … (3 comments)

eureka: The 'older homes' of Humboldt County, California - 10/31/11 04:35 AM
When shopping for a home in this area of Northern California give some consideration to one of the many 'older' homes on the market.
There are several very good reasons to consider one.
1. These homes are generally located in a stable neighborhood.  What you see is what you get s far as the neighborhood is concerned.   The turn over rate in this area is generally low.  Do use caution if there are large areas of undeveloped land very near the property.  Do your research and find out any future plans for that land.
2. Older homes are generally closer … (3 comments)

eureka: The hazard of 'older' septic tanks - 10/24/11 09:09 AM
If you live in a rural area of Northern California and you have a private septic system, is your Septic Tank a Hazard?
The type of "hazard" I am referring to is will the tank or the top of the tank collapse?  Not all septic tanks are concrete tanks with concrete tops.
Many older septic tanks were built out of Redwood and many older concrete tanks have Redwood 'tops'.
How long has it been since your tank was last pumped?  Do you know where the tank is.  Do you know what material the tank is constructed with?  Is the cover on … (11 comments)

eureka: You have 'Termites' in your wood pile! - 10/24/11 09:03 AM
In this area of Northern California, if you have a wood burning stove or fireplace and a wood pile to feed it, you have termites in your wood pile!
1. Keep the location of your woodpile away from your home, do not store wood against your home.
2. Keep your stored wood covered and if possible, off the ground.
3. Limit the amount of wood you keep inside your home.  We do not have snow in this area, getting to the wood pile may require a rain coat but you will not have to shovel snow to get to the wood … (4 comments)

eureka: Skunks; will be looking for a winter home! - 10/24/11 08:56 AM
This is the time of the year that Skunks will be looking for a new home here in Northern California.  Don't let make their new home under your house.
1. Make sure the cover to your crawl space access is secure.
2. Make sure that all vent openings in your foundation are secure.  If necessary replace any covers that are defective.  Don't just try to block them with wood or bricks, skunks are smart and will move the blockage.
3. Take a walk around your home and make sure there are no low spots that a Skunk could take advantage of … (5 comments)

eureka: Don't forget to tun the 'stove hood' on! - 10/24/11 08:43 AM
As the cooler weather of winter approaches in Northern California, it is time to remind you to always use the stove hood when using your gas stove or gas range top.
Carbon Monoxide is produced by both units. It is also a good idea to leave a window slightly open in the kitchen area.
Make sure the stove hood is venting out through the roof and not set on 'recirculate'.  If possible check the stove vent in the attic to make sure it has not been disconnected and is venting into the attic area.  If in doubt call an expert for … (4 comments)
