For most people it is a good idea to have the new home you're thinking of buying inspected by a knowledgeable, professional home inspector.  Your Realtor can include this in your Offer to Purchase.
The role of the home inspector is to educate you on the condition of the property.  They will inform you if something is not functioning properly, needs to be replaced or is unsafe.  You should be told of repairs that will need to be done and often your inspector will be able to identify problems that have existed in the past.
