water damage: True Story of Mold - 05/10/11 02:36 PM
A few months ago my daughter became very ill. The doctor thought that it may be a common ailment known as strep throat and put her on high doses of antibiotics to rid her system of the illness. Unfortunately, several weeks later we had the same issues arise…fever, swollen throat, painful swallowing among other symptoms that do scream “strep throat” to a doctor or parent. This time the doctor did a number of tests, all of which came out negative. Negative? Well then what’s wrong with my child?

I know I sound like an over paranoid parent, but given … (5 comments)

water damage: The Dangers of Sewage Backups - 05/02/11 04:12 AM

You may have heard the term “sewage backup” but not know exactly what one is. A sewage backup can also be referred to as raw sewage, sewage sludge or septic tank waste. All of those terms are equally gross sounding, but they do not alert you to the serious dangers involved.
Septic tank waste is basically a mix of murky water that contains of variety of unpleasant things such as wastewater from your household, organic waste, solid waste, human excrement and debris. All of these things are hazardous to your health, but human excrement brings the highest risks as it contains … (24 comments)

water damage: The Dangers of Black Water - 05/02/11 04:11 AM

Black water damage is the most dangerous type of water damage. This type of water damage is usually caused by sewage backups, which expel raw sewage out into the open. Flood water is also a type of black water, one that is less centralized and less predictable and thus quite difficult to deal with. Even some rain water overflow can be considered black water.
One of the dangers of black water is the process of identifying it. The hazardous water is not always black in color, so don’t let the name confuse you. Black water is any type of water … (3 comments)

water damage: How to Deal with Sewage Backup - 05/02/11 04:06 AM
It has happened, you have a sewage backup. There may be plenty of regrets, but there is no turning back. You have one big, messy, expensive problem on your hands (hopefully not literally) and you are just going to have to deal with it. The question is, how?
The first thing you have to do is assess the extent and seriousness of the damage. If the water is fairly clean, such as from rain causing a flood in your basement, you may be able to begin the process on your own.
The most important thing is to get rid of the … (0 comments)

Water damage is a big mess no matter what kind of flooring you have, but carpeting certainly complicates the matter quite a bit. Carpets are very good at hiding things, so even if you manage to suck the water out of the material, you may not be free of the problems that may exist. There are certain steps you must take in order to protect your home from further damage.
The first thing you need to do is decide if the carpet is safe to salvage. There are three different types of water that could have affected your carpet: clean water, … (0 comments)

water damage: Different types of water that can cause Damage - 05/01/11 10:54 AM

It is a common misconception that all water damage is the same and only the cause of the damage differs. However, this is not so, there are various types of water damage and there are three main categories: clean water, gray water, and black water.
Clean water is also known as white water. This type of damage is the least hazardous of the three variations. Clean water is the water you drink or bathe in, the basic water that flows from the fixtures in your home. While the water itself it not too dangerous, the damage still needs to … (1 comments)

First of all, get the water out of your home or out of your office by extracting the water with a truck mount unit or portable machine.  Please remember that if water sits in a cool dark place that mold has a wonderful and perfect breeding ground.  Make sure that you spray an antimicrobial application to the affected areas that have been wet and soak up wet areas with dry rags or just extract … (2 comments)

Water damage can start as small as a pipe leak or be as big as a flood, either way, the damages need to be taken care of quickly and by a professional. If the proper precautions are not taken and repairs are not made within 24-48 hours, the damage can affect both your home and your health.

water damage: Meeting People in Devestating Circumstances is No One's Cup of Tea - 01/19/11 06:19 AM
Meeting People in Devastating Circumstances is No One's Cup of Tea But sooner or later we all eventually meet up with someone that may have had some tragedy, some set back or catastrophe in their life and we may not know how to handle it. As a home restoration specialist, it's my job to restore something back to the way it was. This is much more in-depth than a simple repair. Typically by the time I get to the job, the damage has well run it's course and it's either clean up and start all over or try to piece back … (2 comments)

water damage: Pre-Inspections ~ Should Home Sellers Have One Done Prior to Listing? - 01/05/11 06:09 AM
Pre-Inspections - Should Home Sellers Have One Done Prior to Listing? This is definitely up for debate. Some agents say yes it's a good idea, some say no. What are the arguments on each side? As a home inspection specialist I would hope the agent and the seller would make that decision for themselves. But let's throw out a couple scenarios first. A) Seller is working on a short sale and knows the property needs work. There may have been water damage in the past but doesn't really know the damage nor do they care. Does the agent simply tell them … (3 comments)

Are you even reading my entire post? Don't you love those comments: "Nice post" Or "Good points" I am really confused as to why they are even posting that. If you need at least 10 words to make your comment count, why bother? If you don't have anything to bring to the table then just read the thing and move along. I have learned though, that many do read and never comment. Heck last week I think I got featured with two comments! I know that can't happen without someone reading it and suggesting it. But then there are those comments … (5 comments)
