canada: VICTORIA DAY IN VICTORIA, BC - 05/18/11 09:56 AM
Victoria Day (Monday May 23 this year) is a statutory holiday in Canada, except for the Atlantic Provinces (why not the Atlantic provinces? I don't really know!)

This coming long weekend (May 22/23) is a lasting reminder of our colonial history. It falls on the weekend before Memorial Day in the United States.
Victoria Day is officially the Sovereign's birthday. It dates back to 1845 with Queen Victoria's birthday. After the Queen died, Parliament established May 23 or 24, as a legal holiday.
Since 1952 the celebration of Victoria has made the event the first long weekend … (2 comments)

canada: It's Official - Victoria real estate has "weathered the storm"! - 06/02/09 01:47 PM
Today, our local rag 'The Times Colonist' shouted out the following headline .. which is what we have been thinking for a while:
Victoria real estate turns around

Despite all the talk of recession, according to the president of the Victoria Real Estate Board, Chris Markham,  Victoria seems to have pulled through.
He says: A total of 879 homes and other properties were sold in May through VREB's multiple listing service. This is a 17% increase over April and even up 14% in comparison with the 770 sales in May of 2008.

canada: First Time Buyers - What are they thinking? - 05/18/09 03:30 PM

I have heard so much about real estate lately from "first time buyers" who say they want to wait until the market "crashes"!!
I would love to know - When is the market going to crash in Victoria?
Fact is, first time buyers rarely seem to purchase when the market is a "buyers" market, for the simple reason that it is not low enough for them.
As history shows, those buyers always purchase in an "up" market because they then feel the need to buy  before it is too late or before they lose out.
It would be interesting to … (4 comments)

canada: Who's Counting? Smell the Flowers, not the Coffee! - 03/14/09 10:55 AM

Most people think of Canada as a cold and snowy country.  Well, not on Vancouver Island! The Victoria flower count is usually held during the last week of February, but this year it has been postponed to March 18th and lasts until March 23, not because of weather or the budget, but Rob Gialloreto, CEO of Tourism Victoria said the issue was due to the number of hours required by staff, as they were the sole programmer for the count.

canada: Victoria is Remembering the Past, Hoping for the Future - Poppies on November 11th - 11/05/08 02:04 AM
In Victoria, BC, starting November 5th and until November 11th, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm the Royal British Columbia Museum, in downtown Victoria, is hosting a week of Remembrance. Featured are community displays and Veterans' talks. There will be a special Remembrance Carillon recital on  Tuesday, Nov. 11th at 12 noon.
The significance of the Poppies that are worn during this week dates back to the worst battlefields of Flanders during World War 1, and to Canadian military physician, poet and author John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields".
I found a copy online:
