vancouver island: British Columbia Day on Cowichan Lake! Outdoor Enthusiasts' Summer Public Holiday! - 08/01/11 02:13 PM
It was a gorgeous hot sunny British Columbia Day (August 1) on Cowichan Lake today and I took a day off work to take full advantage of the slower paced life around the area with a bit of faster life on the water!
Great water skiing on Cowichan Lake. The little town of Lake Cowichan (pop. 3,118), is located at the eastern end of Cowichan Lake, a spectacular region of natural beauty and eco-tourism, with  camping, hiking fishing,  swimming, water-skiing and boating of all sorts. Everywhere was alive with all age groups this long weekend. It's a great recreational … (4 comments)

vancouver island: It was like the North Pole on the Vancouver Island slopes last week! - 02/21/11 02:31 AM
So ... last Wednesday I managed to arrange 2 days away from real estate to go skiing with my wife and son. Of course we were all really looking forward to this little break, but little did we know what was in store for us.
Mt. Washington is a 4 hour drive from Victoria up the island to Courtney - it was a beautiful day, sunny but cool. I had checked the weather and knew it wasn't going to be perfect, perhaps even a little extra snow. Our first day was great - we had fun with our 6 year old … (15 comments)

vancouver island: First Nations Island Towns and Villages in BC - 09/05/10 04:04 AM
Phil Leng, of Kirkland, WA gave me an idea for my Blog this morning. He wrote about Native Indian place names in Washington State.
I want to share with you a fascinating island called Village Island that housed a now-abandoned community called Mamalilaculla, here in beautiful British Columbia.
Located in the Broughton islands, Mamalilaculla, which was originally built on a midden, is an abandoned First Nations community with the remains of an old totem pole rotting away on the ground. Bear scat is often evident near the bushes and the last time I was there (as a teenager) some of the … (2 comments)

vancouver island: We're so lucky to be living in Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia - 07/10/09 01:25 PM

It's true ... we take our beautiful Vancouver Island for granted.
Yesterday, a  family member arrived from Europe. She has never been to Vancouver Island before and is so enthralled with Victoria, commenting that "it's like being on permanent vacation here - the ocean and sandy beach is just across the road, the weather is beautiful and everywhere is clean and green."

Yes, Vancouver Island is called Paradise Island for good reason - we should just keep reminding ourselves how lucky we are!

vancouver island: First Time Buyers - What are they thinking? - 05/18/09 03:30 PM

I have heard so much about real estate lately from "first time buyers" who say they want to wait until the market "crashes"!!
I would love to know - When is the market going to crash in Victoria?
Fact is, first time buyers rarely seem to purchase when the market is a "buyers" market, for the simple reason that it is not low enough for them.
As history shows, those buyers always purchase in an "up" market because they then feel the need to buy  before it is too late or before they lose out.
It would be interesting to … (4 comments)

vancouver island: Tuesday, March 17th Happy St. Patrick's Day - Time to Party! - 03/16/09 03:35 PM

Did you know that the person who became St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales! Having lived on the border of Wales as a child I never knew about St. Patrick until I recently read his background online, and was surprised to read he was Welsh!
I don't remember any St. Patrick's Day events in Wales, but it seems that the biggest celebration, outside of Ireland, is the St. Patrick's Day Parade in the US, which was first celebrated in 1737.
St. Patrick's followers apparently adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock, representing the Trinity.
Tomorrow (March … (0 comments)

vancouver island: Who's Counting? Smell the Flowers, not the Coffee! - 03/14/09 10:55 AM
Most people think of Canada as a cold and snowy country.  Well, not on Vancouver Island! The Victoria flower count is usually held during the last week of February, but this year it has been postponed to March 18th and lasts until March 23, not because of weather or the budget, but Rob Gialloreto, CEO of Tourism Victoria said the issue was due to the number of hours required by staff, as they were the sole programmer for the count.
Freshly cut daffodils have been sent across North America, for the past 33 years, to announce … (0 comments)

vancouver island: Mortgage Rates are Low! Victoria is in Snow! - 03/07/09 12:32 PM

Real Estate is moving along. This week I've seen SOLD signs everywhere, and mortgage rates are low. For example, the current 1 year rate is available at 3.5%.
We've seen every aspect of weather here in Victoria today. This morning was beautifully sunny, this afternoon we had hailstones, and this evening we have snow. It's unbelievable to have this cold weather when the Cherry Blossom trees are already out in bloom all over the city.
Please contact me for all your Vancouver Island real estate needs. I would be happy to hear from you, and offer superior service - … (0 comments)
