Another rumor I need to address, I get calls from folks looking to buy a home in The Villages and they say “I want to avoid Lake County because of higher property tax.” Here are the facts, The Villages is located in three counties, here are their property tax rates, Lake .95%, Marion .99% and Sumter .94%. To put that in the proper perspective there are counties in Florida with tax rates over 1.2% now that would be “higher property tax”.

When you start meeting people it is surprising the number of residents of The Villages that work remotely in this retirement community. I have sold homes to folks in their 40’s who still work full time from home. They decided if I am going to work from home let it be in sunny Central Florida rather than Michigan. For my first years here I needed to fly places to events around the country, how easy to catch a shuttle to get to the airport. Last night just wanted to have a quiet eat at home meal without the fuss of making it, my choice anything I wanted, my pick Alfee’s Grill carryout. We started with a little Lebanese with a Falafel Platter which was chick pea balls with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and tahini garlic sauce, served with tabouli and pita as an appetizer. Second reminder tomorrow is the last day to sign up and pay for our annual Oktoberfest held a block away on the Cul-de-sac of Catalina Court you can see all the info included on the picture.
This annual event has been going on since the 1990’s did I mention our social club is the oldest continuing club in The Villages? The other day I wrote an article about Groome offering shuttle service to the Orlando Airport and in that article, I wrote about the new high speed rail service to South Florida and had request for more information. I heard from folks about taking cruises out of the ports in Fort Lauderdale and Miami and the train is how they could get to the port. Recently in a comment I mentioned the concept of buying now and renting until you move here either as a snowbird or full time. It created some interest and was asked to explain the details. Renters are a touchy subject at the moment so please know I am not advocating we turn The Villages into one big Airbnb, remember I live here as well.

On one of my trips to Florida before moving here I discovered Royal Red Shrimp. The waitress explained them to me and I needed to know more because they were fabulous. Royal red shrimp are tender, salty-sweet and one of the most unique harvestable species of shrimp in all of Florida. After a week, he went home empty handed because interest rates are not killing the market here in The Villages. I remember my first winter in Florida in 2008, I was watching the local news and they had reporters out in the field reporting live that the temperatures could drop below freezing. They predicted a brutal night ahead with temps dipping maybe as low as 29º! I though wow in Pennsylvania 29º was sweater weather, oh how I have changed. Temps in the 50’s!!!! How will we survive? Never mind high the next day will be 80º.

Recently Groome Transportation took over the shuttle service from The Villages to Orlando International Airport and the return from airport and they are increasing the services available. Before the changeover there were 15 shuttles a day between The Villages and the airport it now has been expanded to 20 plus they have added another stop. In the past, you had stops at the Brownwood Hotel and Spa and Lake Sumter Landing after October 15th the shuttle will also service the Spanish Springs Depot. One of the activities which you don’t find most places is Polo, never been to a match you need to try it at least once. The Villages, Florida has a Polo Club and actually it boasts the biggest attendance in the United States with 30,000 attending annually. Don’t know anything about Polo no problem show up early and take the 30-minute Polo 101 class so you know what a chukkers is and understand more about the sport.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting a fun couple I have been corresponding with for months at Panera’s at Lake Sumter Landing. We never actually spoke on the phone but between comments on my Facebook Page and emails it was great to sit down and spend some time with them.
