radon: Do you really save energy if you switch to an electronic thermostat versus the traditional thermostat that is found in older homes? - 09/13/11 09:59 AM
Question:
Do you really save energy if you switch to an electronic thermostat versus the traditional thermostat that is found in older homes?

Answer:
Since we’re heading into heating season, this is a great time to explore this issue.
The short answer is yes, you can save energy by upgrading your thermostat.
Why a manual thermostat is not your friendThere are a couple of problems with old, manual thermostats (the kind with a dial or a sliding lever). First, they are often not as accurate as new electronic models. That can cause wide swings in room temperatures or make your … (2 comments)

radon: What does ENERGY STAR® really mean? If all the appliances are ENERGY STAR, is there really a point to it? - 08/29/11 12:22 PM
Question: What does ENERGY STAR® really mean? If all the appliances are ENERGY STAR, is there really a point to it?

ENERGY STAR® is a joint program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy that’s designed to encourage energy efficiency for the home and for business.
Your question is a good one because we’re always encouraging customers to look for the ENERGY STAR label when buying appliances. But when you go to the store, it seems like all of the products have ENERGY STAR labels, right? Not quite. Many do, and that’s a good thing. It … (3 comments)

radon: More Awesome Radon Info - 11/10/08 06:36 AM
I have to thank Salvador Del Cid with RE/MAX in North Portland for his excellent blog on radon over the last few days. His wife is also a reporter for KOIN 6 News and did a fabulous piece of the dangers of radon.
The link to the short story that was on the news Friday is:

There is also a longer 24 minute interview with Scott Burns, Professor of Geology, Department of Geology,Portland State University. It is better than some of the multi-day long classes I've taken on radon. The link to that one is:

radon: Pillar To Post: Eco-Friendly Remodeling - 10/20/08 04:25 AM
Whether you are making an addition to your home or remodeling your bathroom cabinets, eco-friendly choices can help you conserve resources and reduce your impact on the environment. As the demand for green building materials grows, major manufactures are expanding their affordable sustainable options, so the green choice may also be the less expensive one. Here are some green guidelines to consider during your next remodeling project.
Consider renewable sources for cabinetry. Choose wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which will be harvested from sustainably managed forests. Spruce, eucalyptus or reclaimed wood are durable, sustainable options from sources … (2 comments)

radon: What's all the fuss about RADON? - 10/13/08 04:55 AM
What's all the fuss about RADON?

Really, is radon a legitimate concern in our part of the county?  I thought we were out of the "hot" zone. You know, the Midwest.  Are some unscrupulous sorts playing on our ignorance and fear to drum up business doing unnecessary testing and mitigation of our homes?

It's not the intention of this article to prove that radon is present in Oregon.  Hundreds, if not thousands, of measurements taken in the area prove that it is present.  But it is also true that Oregon does have lower levels on average than the rest … (4 comments)

radon: Another Reason Not To Trust The Oregon Radon Threat Map - 03/21/08 06:57 AM

Here is the Oregon Radon Map.
Yellow is a very low "threat' of radon
Orange is a medium "threat" of radon
Red is a very high "threat" of radon
Everyone that argues there is no threat for radon in Oregon always points to this map. The maps were originally developed by the National Geodesic society based on the likelihood of certain mineral deposits being present. The results of suspected radon concentrations based on those maps and actual radon concentrations found by testing were found to be quite different.  Once the EPA was able to gather data from actual radon measurements they revised the maps … (0 comments)
