athens ga: CRAZY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN OCONEE CO GA - 12/25/11 03:30 AM
Out on Cole Springs Rd. in Oconee Co. GA there are several neighbors who seem to be trying to out do each other with their Christmas light displays.  We drove by there last night and there were cars lined up on the road and people walking around the displays.
These photos do not do justice to the lights:

athens ga: Some cool things to do on a hot day in Athens, GA - 09/13/11 04:20 AM

Recently, we were looking for something to do on a hot afternoon in Athens and came up with a couple of fun ideas.
First, we visited the newly reopened Georgia Museum of Art over on the East Campus of the University of Georgia.  Previously, we had seen several special exhibits there, but they did not have room to display many of their own collection.  With a beautiful new addition, there are a number of paintings now on permanant display.
Then we headed on over to the State Botanical Gardens located on South Milledge Avenue.  They were having a special exhibit … (0 comments)

athens ga: ATHENS IS LAID BACK IN THE SUMMER - 05/20/10 02:26 AM
Of course we love The University of Georgia, her students and all that entails with football games, rush, parties and other activities.  That is what makes Athens, GA run!  But us natives also enjoy and look forward to summer break and holidays when the some 33,000 students evacuate the town and leave it to us.  It's a little like a beach town when the vacationers have all gone home for the winter.  We don't even notice the 13,000 or so students in town for summer school.   What we have is a laid back place, little traffic and the ability to eat in any … (0 comments)

After a long wait, Oconee County, GA, finally has a place for visitors to stay at the recently opened SpringHill Suites by Marriot.  Not to slight our two wonderful B&B's, Ashford Manor and Rivendell, but many visitors prefer having a hotel-like atmosphere.
The hotel is located just off GA 316 which leads to Athens from Atlanta, and is convenient to the Exchange office buildings.
It's a perfect place to stay when visiting in Oconee County or Athens, GA.

athens ga: The Iron Horse - 02/14/09 07:06 AM

Many people driving north on GA 15 toward Athens wonder why there is a huge statue of a horse standing proudly in the middle of a field, often nearly hidden by corn in the summer.  Well, the answer is legendary in the Athens, GA area.
It seems that back in 1954, Abbott Pattison, then a UGA artist in residence, sculpted the horse out of metal.  The horse's home was to be in front of Reed Hall, and the first night it was placed there, outraged students sprayed it with paint and a mattress was burned under it.  After this, the horse … (0 comments)

athens ga: A Saturday in Athens - 01/26/09 06:30 AM
This past Saturday being somewhat rainy, we decided to venture out to town.  For awhile we had been meaning to visit the newly restored TRR Cobb House on Hill Street.  This home which had been owned by General Thomas Cobb had been sold and moved to Stone Mountain to be restored there, which never took place.  A few years ago it was moved back to Athens on a lot on Hill Street, close to it's original site.  The docent gave us a complete tour of the house and showed us the improvements and furnishings that they are collecting.  If you go … (0 comments)

athens ga: Athens Receives National Trust for Historic Preservation Award - 01/20/09 04:12 AM
Any of us who travel Milledge Ave, Prince Ave. and the Cobb/Hill areas regularly see the beautiful old homes and huge trees that Athens has to offer.  Now the National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Athens as a top 12 Distinctive Destination.    The Trust said of Athens "The vibrant city of Athens, Georgia, is known for its distinct blend of traditional heritage and trendsetting Southern culture, a mix of historic attractions, a dynamic downtown and a lively music scene".  This award shows the importance of preserving our historic homes, churches and business buildings as something to be appreciated for the … (0 comments)

athens ga: Christmas Parades - 12/01/08 09:12 AM
This is the week of local Christmas Parades.  The Athens, GA parade is on Thursday, Dec. 4 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. They finish up at the Athens City Hall and have a tree lighting.
However, my favorite is the Watkinsville, GA Christmas Parade!
It will be this Saturday, Dec. 6 starting at 11:00 a.m.  It begins on Barnett Shoals Road and continues down Main Street and last year it took about an hour for all of the floats to pass.
This year there are 109 entries and I'm certain that they will include every Boy and Girl Scout in the county plus the … (0 comments)

athens ga: Colleges in Athens GA - 09/25/08 12:58 AM
Everyone thinks of Athens GA as the home of the University of Georgia.  Of course, it is (home of about 33,000 bulldawgs this fall) but most people aren't aware of the other educational opportunities that we have in Athens.  The students at the Oconee campus of Gainesville College and Piedmont College, not to mention Athens Technical College are from the local area, but Athens is a draw for a number of students from throughout Georgia.  Many of them begin their college careers at Gainesville and then transfer to the University.
Gainesville College had to cap their enrollment as they are limited … (0 comments)

athens ga: New Dickey's Barbecue in the Athens, GA area - 09/22/08 03:39 AM
On Sunday, September 21, we attended a  "soft opening" for some friends, Glenn & Debra Townsend's new Dickey's Barbecue restaurant.  Wow, were we impressed!! This is some of the best 'cue you'll ever eat!  We tried the pulled pork, brisket and sampled one of the ribs. Smoked brisket is unusual around here and it was ever so tender.   Along with this they have a choice of sides and a roll.  Paul & I tried the smoked beans and slaw (I loved the slaw and I'm really picky about slaw) and the beans were delicious.  One thing that impressed Paul was that they had … (0 comments)
