chicago neighborhood news: CHICAGO DRIVERS Pay Some of the Highest Auto Insurance Premiums in the U.S. - IL Ranked #9 Nationally! - 04/21/10 03:11 PM
You own and drive a car in Chicago?  Chances are, you're paying a high premium for your auto insurance!
According to research just completed by the Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois, as reported in the Chicago Tribune by Reporter Kiah Haslett, the average IL driver forks out $1,679.15 each year to keep insurance-legal (basic liability coverage is required of all IL Drivers - although most drivers also keep expensive collision and comprehensive vehicle coverage, many for multiple vehicles).
High insurance bills are something we Chicago Drivers have lived with - albeit reluctantly - for years.
As a novice driver in Chicago, … (4 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: CHICAGO MAYOR RICHARD DALEY Advocates Tougher Gun Laws, Defends Chicago Gun Ban! - 03/10/10 12:30 AM
Here in Chicago, the cynical among us beam that our city was the Birthplace of the Drive By Shooting.  Gun rights advocates claim that restrictive gun laws do little, if anything, to curb violent handgun crimes, and extol the virtue of a citizen's right to bear arms.
Truth be told, however, gun crimes here in Chicago, especially those involving school-aged children, have skyrocketed over the last few years.  This is despite the fact that, on the books anyway, the sale, use, and manufacture of handguns has been banned in the City of Chicago for over two decades.
In Washington, the U.S. Supreme Court … (3 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: GLUT OF RENTALS IN CHICAGO - Rent Reductions, Other Incentives Abound this Spring! - 02/12/10 10:10 AM
You wanna live in Downtown Chicago or The Chicago Loop?  Desire to rent, rather than to buy?
Likely, you're going to save a lot of money by renting downtown!
In 2010, in excess of 2,200 new rental units will be added to existing rental inventory in and near The Loop this year.  This is on top of the nearly 1,300 existing rental units in or near Downtown.
Also, condominium units available for lease, after another difficult selling season for their owners, have flooded the market in Downtown Chicago.  For the 12 month period that ended June, 2009, nearly 4.500 condo … (1 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: In Chicago, Star Trek Technology May Soon Nab More Speeders! - 02/11/10 02:26 PM
From Chicago - the land of expensive on-street parking, $100 red light camera citations, and now-more-infrequent CTA Bus Service - comes a new technology designed to generate more municipal and county revenue.  The technology -
LIDAR - Speed Guns that work with high-tech Laser Beams, rather than old-fashioned Radar Waves - will now be allowed as evidence of Speeding Violations in Traffic Courts  across Cook County IL, the county in which the City of Chicago is located.
In the City of Chicago itself, however, the jury on LIDAR Guns is still out.  The city's Law Department is having its own hearing … (2 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: CHICAGO GAS HEATING RATES GOING UP NEXT MONTH! - 01/24/10 12:07 PM
Live in Chicago?  You know, during a Cold Chicago Winter, heating bills can go through the roof.   Especially if you have an older home, with 1920's-era insulation.
Four winters ago, during a spell when Natural Gas Prices spiked here in Chicago, one of our January gas heating bills topped at $640 - for only one month!  And we don't have a huge home - just a modest Chicago Bungalow!
This winter has been comparatively mild, except for several weeks of chill earlier this month.  But our bills for December and January have approached $300 - still quite high, but not quite … (2 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: MUCH MORE CHICAGO WINTER TO COME, But Chicago Street Potholes Down in 2010! - 01/14/10 03:53 PM
You drive in Chicago?
If you do, each winter and into spring, you would see why many refer to the City of Chicago as "Pothole Central, U.S.A."  Each year, the notorious freeze-thaw cycle inherent in a typical Chicago winter wreaks havoc on the road surfaces of most of the 3,800 miles of arterial and residential streets across the city.
But, according to Chicago Tribune "Getting Around" Reporter Jon Hilkevitch, 2010 offers much more for city drivers to cheer about - rather, to be relieved about - as compared to one year ago.   The number of potholes - deep, axle-jarring, alignment-destroying craters in Chicago Streets, … (1 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: CHICAGO COLD CASE - 1939 Apparent Mob Hit Could Implicate the Al Capone Gang! - 01/12/10 11:44 AM
Chicago!
Will it ever get passed the old Al Capone Rep?  The made-for-Hollywood story of Eliot Ness and the Untouchables exposing Old Al for Income Tax Evasion, and sending him to prison - truth, or urban legend?
Being a life-long Chicagoan folks, I stay up late each night to watch Robert Stack play Eliot Ness on the vintage 1950's TV show each evening on MeTV. (It's true - ask my wife!)  I enjoyed seeing the Ruggedly Handsome Kevin Costnerplay Ness in the movie.  I even watched the short-lived Untouchables revival TV show back in the 90's.
But, in reality, the linchpin … (2 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: IN CHICAGO, On-Street Parking Fees Jump, Once Again, in New Year! - 01/03/10 11:43 PM
Ahhh, yes!  Chicago Politics at its absolute finest!
Late in 2008, the Chicago City Council virtually rubber-stamped, with little debate, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's program to lease the Chicago Parking Meter System - thousands of meters across the city - to a private company.  In return for this 75-Year Lease, the City received an up-front payment of $1.2 Billion, plus all of the collected fines from meter violations.  The private firm keeps all of the meter fees, in exchange for updating and maintaining the updated Chicago Street Parking System.
The first move of the private company - to quadruple the long-standing … (1 comments)

chicago neighborhood news: IL To Ban Text Messaging While Driving Effective Midnight Tonight! - 12/31/09 09:19 AM
Don't text while you drive!
Sounds pretty common sense, doesn't it?  It stands to reason that distracted driving could cause traffic accidents,  Perhaps ones causing serious injuries, even fatalities.
But, as you drive home from work, I would guess you might often find that daredevil texter or email author on the road with you - perhaps even in the car behind you, or beside you.
Here in Chicago, seeing a driver texting on our busy Kennedy or Edens Expressways - even during times when average traffic speeds are far short of 15 miles per hour - is a bit unnerving, yes?
