ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Are you using any forums (aside from AR)? Any to recommend? - 09/08/13 08:38 AM
As background, my main website's traffic dropped a bit about 3 weeks ago.  It's still strong, but the traffic has decreased maybe 30-40%.  It doesn't seem like my site has been penalized or anything, but rather that just a few of my top posts that were doing phenomenally (3,000-5,000 clicks/month) have dropped a few spots and are now maybe doing 1,500-3,000/month and several others have dropped.  But, still I have good traffic and I am diversified on the web with my other website, Active Rain and people finding on on Google Places (or whatever the heck it's called now) and Google … (37 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Cool...believe or it not...I inserted picts on new profile page - 08/25/13 06:27 PM
This was lucky.  I read in a comment somewhere that an ambassador had pictures on their profile, so there may be hope.  Sure enough, I poked around and found that Jeff Dowler had some on his.  Not sure if this was who that comment was referencing or not, but it gave me confidence that there was a way!

So, I went back to my old profile post, opened it, and made sure it was in edit mode.  I tested it by coping and pasting the first picture....and, it worked.  Well not exactly the way I wanted it (since apparently you … (29 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: I never would have guessed my customer is almost 90 - 08/23/13 10:03 AM
Today, I met with a lovely woman who is interested in refinishing her hardwood floors. It was a lovely meeting, and I hope we have the opportunity to work together.

At the end, she mentioned that her 90th birthday was coming up.  I was floored.  She looked amazing for her age, and she is so incredibly logical and lucid.  I asked her what her secret was, but she didn't know.  It sounds like it runs in her family.  I'm still amazed.  I'd love to be like her when I grow up.

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Another coincidence - Dobbs Ferry - 07/25/13 06:10 AM
I love these little coincidences.

I just got a call from a friend of mine.  She is someone who I worked for in NJ when I was an intern at Reckitt & Colman - maybe 15 yrs ago...or maybe more.  We've been connected on LinkedIn for years, so she sees my flooring updates.  She lives in New Jersey and needs some flooring for her basement, and she wanted some advice.  So I referred her to my good friend in NJ who owns a Floor Coverings International there.

After we solved that, we got into the "hey how are? How's … (3 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Some of my new pinterest boards - 07/06/13 08:05 PM
I was inspired by a recent post from Lynn Pineda on pinterest - about how some of her boards are ranking for key words and also how some of our profile (as well as boards) have good page rank (several are PR3), so I thought I would start to do a bit of work on some new boards that I'm hoping will rank better in the future.

The first one is Refinish Hardwood floors - FAQ - Westchester.  In here, I'm starting to gather pictures of hardwood floors and link to blog posts I've written with key questions that … (21 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Random wanderings on the internet - 06/15/13 12:00 PM
It's amazing how time can escape you when you're curious...and when you have access to the internet.

Over the last 5 years, I've come across a whole bunch of houses that reminded me of Frank Lloyd Wright.  I didn't know why, but when I was in them, I just couldn't stop thinking about him.  These houses were in a few different towns - Chappaqua, Armonk and Pleasantville...but all right near each other - where the towns intersect.  I have also come across a few other "designer" homes that reminded me of him as well scattered throughout our region.

So, … (12 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: What's your top post for 2013? Other Active Rainers would love to know - 06/09/13 06:48 AM
I almost missed this post from The Inspiration Station:Which Blog of Yours Has Received the Most Clicks in 2013?” But, thanks to Jeff Dowler's post, I caught it on the rebound.  I wanted to suggest his post, but ran out of suggests for the day...so do me a favor and please head on over to his post and suggest it.  The more of us that participate the better.  We can all learn from each other.

Surprisingly, my #1 Active Rain post for 2013 doesn't even have any real key words on it...I wasn't trying to rank at all.
Sounds … (9 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Links to past "Useful" contests...GREAT learning here - 05/11/13 08:21 AM
Active rain has always been a place of learning and sharing.  There is tons of great info here that can help all of our businesses - both agents and non agents, both new and veterans and everyone in between.

In the past, there have been several contest with TONS of useful info.   These are the challenges where we have been asked to write about areas that we learned and have improved our businesses.  Some are general marketing ideas; others are general business processes, and some are specific (e.g. the most amazing kick butt listing presentations.

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Yes, sometimes the customers read the comments, too! - 05/11/13 01:52 AM
Earlier this week, I got a call from a super sweet customer.  She found my blog on Active Rain and said she really wanted to work with me because she loved the way I wrote and she loved the way that I responded to all of the comments.  She said it showed how much I cared about the customer.

I was so honored, and then I asked what she typed into google, and she couldn't remember.  I then asked which article she read, and she said "all of them..well maybe just a lot of them." She was interested in … (22 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: ORIGIN OF THE WORD REALTOR...here's some advice..optimize for realator - 05/10/13 08:12 PM
Here's some good advice to help all you realtors and/or real estate agents out there from a search perspective.  read this related article
http://activerain.com/blogsview/1774136/realator-vs-realtor
Key takeaway...people misspell...so optimize for realator, too.
I am at a listing presentation yesterday and the owner asks me how the word Realtor originated.  I told her in 40 years no one has ever asked me that question.  All Realtors are licensed real estate agents but not all licensed real estate agents are Realtors.  It is pronounced Real tor not Real a tor.  You have to be a member of the National Association of Realtors to be a Realtor.  … (3 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Active Rain Trivia - a reprise - 05/10/13 09:28 AM
A while back, I posted some Active Rain trivia.  I thought it would be fun to revisit this...and see how things have changed (or stayed the same).  Note: I will have to try to figure out some of the updated answers, too. I hope you have fun with this.

Also, this may help some of the newer people learn how to find some of this info.

Here are some fun trivia questions about our fellow members.  See if you can identify them.  Some are easy; some are challenging.
1.  Who has the highest # of featured posts?
2.  Which … (10 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: I love giving referrals - 05/07/13 10:08 PM
I had two appointments in a row where I was able to give out several referrals to my customers.  This felt great. First, I was helping my customers to make sure they have great contractors/service providers and secondly, I'm helping several of my colleagues so it feels doubly good.  Some of these people I help all the time, others have given me more referrals (just by the nature of their biz), and so I was super happy to return the favor.

Both of these customers are preparing their homes to sell.  One has already moved to Richmond; the other is … (11 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Quick tip of the day - Optimize title; avoid contest words - 05/05/13 08:32 PM
This advice is for anyone who cares about their blog post ranking well in the search results.

I see this mistake made all the time...so try to avoid it...

The most important aspect of your post (from a ranking perspective) is the Title.  So spend time optimizing it for the key words you want to rank on.  I think most people here get this...but they still fall into this trap.

There are a lot of contests here (which I think is great), and many here incorporate some aspect of the contest title or requirement into their post title.  … (52 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Quick tip of the day - Google Reviews - 05/04/13 11:38 PM
I think by now, most of us know we should be on Google places or google local...which I think has now been folded into google plus.  Here is a link to our

There are certainly things here I'm trying to optimize (including linking to my correct website), but that's a story for another post.  If you haven't done one for your business, do that today.  I'm guessing that by following my link, you can do that and create your own.

I think we also know, having reviews on here can help you.  We currently have 6 reviews (we … (10 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: That laptop sticker did it again! - 05/04/13 08:32 AM
As some of you know, one of my smartest marketing investments was a sticker for my laptop.  It costs a whopping $15.  It is essentially a billboard that helps me advertise without me having to try. (see picture to the right...yes, that's the sticker).

I often hangout in Starbucks in between appointments. It's a great way for me to catch up on estimates and get online.  And, yes, I do get leads from this and often, it's a great conversation starter.  People will walk up to me and ask me about it - sometimes because they need flooring, and sometimes … (50 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: The view from my favorite Starbucks - Spring is here in Briarcliff - 05/04/13 12:50 AM
The weather has been perfect these last few days - not to hot, not to cold and low humidity.  Spring is finally here and every day more and more trees and flowers are blooming.  Here's the view from my favorite Starbucks - the one in Briarcliff NY.  I believe the pink flowering trees are crab apple trees.  I love their color and contrast vs the green trees.
This is the corner of 9A and North State Rd. It's hard to believe that it's a parkway - The Briarcliff Peekskill Parkway.

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: This must be from before my time - 05/03/13 10:23 AM
This evening I went on an appointment with a fellow Active Rainer.  Thank you, Gay Rosen. Gay is the listing agent on this property and it's an Estate and there are still some items to clear out.  As a former consumer packaged goods marketer, I had to check out the old cleaning products and logos on the shelf.  It was really interesting.

Then, something caught my eye - something I've never seen before...typewriter cleaner. I had to snap a picture.

We also found an old unopened record for the Broadway cast of Carousel (w/ John Raitt and Jerry Orbach) … (9 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: My evening routine went kerplop - 04/30/13 12:21 PM
I love to take a bath at night.  It's so relaxing and it helps me fall asleep. It's my little reward for the day.  This evening, I was disappointed when I started to fill the tub and the water looked dirty.  I drained it and ran some more, and it looked okay, so I filled it again, but alas, dirty water.

I tried a 3rd time.  My cats were curious as to what was going on and they jumped in (yes, I know...they are crazy...who ever heard of cats that like water).  But, no 3rd time didn't work either.

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: 2 people recognized me from my online picture - 04/29/13 10:57 AM
I had 2 interesting encounters within 24 hrs.  First, on Friday evening, I met a real estate agent who let my customer and I into an apartment so I could give an estimate for refinishing hardwood floors.  As I gave her my card, she said, "Oh I know you.  I get your monthly emails.  You're Debbie!"  That was so surprising and so cool (by the way, I have no idea how she got onto my email list - but it was probably from a few years ago).

The next day, I went to another appointment for sanding and refinishing. This … (18 comments)

ramblings from a westchester flooring store shop at home: Here's when a lock box would have come in handy - 04/26/13 10:51 AM
This evening I had an appointment for sanding and refinishing hardwood floors in Scarsdale.  My customer hasn't closed yet, and he made a special trip from Queens to meet me.

We both met there, and than the real estate agent called to say she forgot the key!  What?  So, he had to drive home and then get it, and meanwhile we had to wait a bit over an hour.  I was kind of astonished.  My first reaction, was "What?  I thought there was a lock box?"  (And, of course there was...up until 3 days ago, when she removed it.)
