ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: My first real google hangout...Real estate Pros getting started on G+
- 10/03/13 09:14 PM
Okay, here goes, my first "real" google hangout. To be honest, I had no clue how to get this thing set up, but somehow, I got in. This was hosted by Joshua Berg and the purpose is to help people in the real estate community (e.g. agents, brokers, mortgage brokers, stagers, etc.) get started on Google Plus. But as you'll see, it really applies to everybody. I was honored to be included in this group of wonderful Google Plussers. I was a bit tired (understatement of the year), and my cat (who heard my voice) decided that he wanted to

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Customer: "We want to put laminate on top of hardwood." Me: Are you sure??
- 09/04/13 10:48 AM
My middle appointment of the day was a very sweet older couple. Absolutely lovely. It seems they had some minor water damage on their hardwood, and they knew the water stain would not come out. And, they were right. So they wanted to add laminate flooring on top of the hardwood. At least, that is what they originally told me. They had thought things through and at first were very definite with their opinion. But, as I started to question them more and offer alternative solutions, they were willing to listen. They didn't realize that it would

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: What are the dates for the Jewish High Holidays 2013?
- 09/03/13 08:00 PM
Dates for the Jewish holidays 2013 - the High Holidays I thought it might be helpful to jot down the dates for the Jewish holidays for 2013. As this is based on the Jewish lunar calendar, the dates vary every year, and this year, they are early, with all of them taking place in September. Importantly, the holidays start on the eve of the evening before. If you have friends, clients, colleagues who might be celebrating these holidays, it's best to avoid phone calls during these days, especially for the first two - Rosh Hashana (the New Year celebration)

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Courtyard Flowers at the Seasons in White Plains
- 09/02/13 10:43 AM
I love living at the Seasons in White Plains. I love the building and the proximity to the stores and train. I love love love the pool as well as the healthclub. And, it's nice to enjoy the seasonal barbeques and bagel brunches they have for the holidays. Today we had a BBQ for Labor Day and it was fun to catch with a few neighbors and meet a few others. As I was walking back from the gazebo I noticed the beautiful flowers, so I had to take a few shots. I hope you like them.

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Another wonderful meet up at Dagny's
- 09/01/13 09:46 PM
I'm late in posting this...maybe a week and a half. I always look forward to our Active Rain Meetups at Dagny's. She is a wonderful hostess, and we have a great group of Rainers in the area. I think you'll recognize a whole bunch of them here. There were 22 people there (but not everyone made the picture). It's always fun to catch up with our Active Rain family, and the usual suspects were there again - Gail Robinson (I was so happy to hear about her new activities), Dagny, of course, Ed Silva, George Souto, Barbara Altieri

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: That's funny...you met with my mother-in-law today
- 08/28/13 09:55 AM
This evening I got a call from a real estate agent. I recently met him (maybe 2 months ago) and I really like/respect him. He is very impressive, and I'm sure he will go far (in fact he probably has already). He has a real entreprenurial spirit, and he's definitely someone I would like to know better...just on a professional note, as I'm sure we can help build each others' busienss just by sharing ideas. Anyway, he called me this evening and said, "What a coincidence." You just met with my mother-in-law today about carpet. She called me about

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: No realtors at our Westchester Active Rain Meetup
- 08/20/13 12:38 PM
Tonight was a lovely evening. I always love Active Rain Meetups. And, LOL, even though Active Rain is a real estate site, we did not have any realtors or real estate agents at our meetup. We definitely had diversity in our group, and that's what has made all of our meetups so special. This time, we had a decorator - Joanna Cohlan, an inspector - Anthony Cioppa, a Business Coach - Grant Schneider and moi, The Flooring Girl. It was an absolutely lovely evening sitting outside in perfect weather and with perfect company. Each of us shared some business ideas,

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: You know your branding is working when...
- 08/19/13 11:10 PM
...you get stopped in a parking garage and someone asks for your business card. I live in an apartment building in White Plains. Maybe 300 apartments or so, I'm not quite sure. I have never actively marketed to my building, for a variety of reasons...the largest one being that 6 years ago when the building when condo, all of the previous rentals were already converted to hardwood flooring (right before I started my biz). And, while I could actively market to my building, there are much better opportunities for me with larger houses where we can install or refinish much

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Reminder: Westchester Active Rain MeetUp - Tue 8/20 6pm
- 08/18/13 08:14 PM
This is just a quick reminder that we will be having our Summer Westchester Meetup tomorrow, Tues August 20th at 6pm. It will be in White Plains at Uno's, 14 Martine Ave. There is free parking in the building at the Seasons. If you live in the area, or if you happen to be here, we'd love to see you. Bonus: for those that attend and blog about it, there is a bonus 1,000 Active Rain points. Last time, we had a great turnout. This time, though, I kind of hoping for a small group. Sometimes, that's how

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Can I speak with the flooring lady?
- 08/17/13 12:06 PM
Earlier this week, I got a call from a customer. He said, "Is this the flooring lady?" I laughed and said yes, and added of course added that I'm "The Flooring Girl." Anyway, he said, I not sure if you remember me, but I live in New Canaan and you gave me an estimate to refinish our floors. I said, "Oh yes, I remember you. You're on the long street that goes all the way into Pound Ridge." He was impressed that I remembered that as well as the rooms in the house and that one of the rooms had pegged

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: To the Village Court of Larchmont - Please rescind your ticket
- 08/16/13 06:55 AM
I am most disgruntled citizen of Westchester who chose to eat lunch in one of your open cafes in Larchmont on Chatsworth Ave. It was a lovely day, and I was happy to give the town of Larchmont my business. I had discovered a new restaurant and I was planning to return again on many occasions. However, I was dismayed as I noticed a parking attendant who gave me a ticket right in front of my eyes. She claimed I had a lapsed vehicle registration. The registration has big numbers saying 8 2013 meaning (as I believed) to be good

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Have you seen this yet?
- 08/15/13 01:29 PM
I saw this ad and reposted it on Google Plus the other day. It's really clever advertising. Have a look and tell me what you think. See if you can view it full screen. I think it has over 7 million views right now. This reminds me a bit of a movie I saw in the early 90's.

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: My favorite app - google calendar
- 08/13/13 10:29 AM
Okay, I'm really not sure what classifies as an app or not an app, but I love, love, love, Google Calendar on my phone. I use it everyday and it has saved me so much time and made my life so much easier. I'm constantly on the go for my job. I spend a lot of time going to customer's homes and driving all around, so my phone comes in handy and is with me all the time. I used to carry a paper calendar (in my day planner) and honestly I was so reluctant to give it up. I

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: ugghhhhh - I can't get my blue tooth to work well.
- 08/12/13 11:02 AM
Uggh is all I have to say. I go through so many bluetooths (or blueteeth?). A week or so ago, I lost the rubber thing for the ear piece. Couldn't hear well. Then, I must have dropped it or something so the wire was loose, and then no one could understand me. Friday, I got a new one. It didn't work well - I couldn't hear very well, and they couldn't hear me. Saturday, I thought I solved the issue w/ the sonic rider. It seemed to work well....but I didn't actually get to talk to anyone on it.

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: I traded my bluetooth in for a Sonic Rider
- 08/10/13 10:15 AM
I don't know about you, but I seem to go through bluetooths like water (not sure if bluetooths is a word LOL). I lose lots of them, and I seem to break others. I feel like I should own stock in all the blue tooth companies since I seem to buy so many LOL. The latest issue happened earlier this week. My blue tooth just started coming in all fuzzy. My boyfriend thinks I dropped it on the floor and that cause a wire to come out of place. First, I thought it was just him...maybe he had a screw

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Today's coincidence
- 08/08/13 11:00 AM
I feel like each week that goes by brings more coincidences and shows me what a small world this is. This job can really be fun, and I'm amazed at how many people I meet. This evening's customer and her daughter founded a dog rescue company. That was very cool. And, I had a lot of fun playing with these 2 young puppies. A few weeks ago there were 8. Now, there are only 2. Later, I provided my customer with our reference list - we have close to 40 customers on there. My customer recognized one of people

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Some of my pinterest boards
- 08/06/13 09:00 PM
Lynn Pineda keeps giving me great advice and reminders on how to strengthen my presence on pinterest and how to leverage pinterest for more traffic. She has been successful in getting a few of her boards to come up on google searches for her key words. I think a few of mine are shoing up on page one (towards bottom of page), and this is my attempt to give them a bit more juice. So here goes. First, I created a board called Refinish hardwood floors FAQ Westchester. As the name implies, this board has pictures and FAQ's and

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Another little coincidence in West Harrison
- 08/05/13 09:36 AM
Today, I went to an appointment for refinishing brazilian walnut hardwood floors in Westchester. I was excited about this appointment. Even though it was a small job, it was a repeat customer and right down the street from my brother & sister-in-law (they live 5 mins from me). I was supposed to meet one of the owners (who lives next door), but he was running late, so his mother let me in. She said that she was impressed that I showed up exactly on time and loved the work we did last time, so she wanted to hire us again.

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: Sweet - my new license plate arrived
- 07/31/13 07:18 AM
What a pleasant surprise. My vanity license plates arrived early! Yes, the DMV exceeded my expectations for the first time in my life. I was so excited and took my new plates and the rims to my favorite auto repair shop - Fred's Auto in Briarcliff, and they put the new plates on. Do you like them? Fred took a picture of the new plates and he added to his facebook page.

ramblings from a westchester shop at home flooring store: How fun to meet with past customers and see the progress they've made on thier homes
- 07/30/13 09:33 AM
This week, I've had the pleasure of meeting with 2 past customers and it was so fun seeing all the progress they've made on their Westchester homes. Today's customer was from 4 years ago. When he first bought this co-op, it had 2 layers of carpet on top of hardwood and just looked like a mess everywhere. We refinished his hardwood floors and they look spectacular. He painted as well, He redid his bathroom which also looks amazing, and he had California Closets help create a whole shelving system for an office. Now, it's time for the kitchen which
