children: Spreading Christmas Cheer - Awkward Santa Photos - 12/21/17 09:09 AM
We have enjoyed reading a number of sentimental, poignant and heartfelt posts this month, but we both remarked, we're missing some Christmas Cheer. It's time to lighten up.

Therefore, we're going to have a little fun in the days leading up to Christmas. Since we can both be a bit irreverent, these two photos of family children on Santa's lap made us laugh and laugh. We hope they tickle you too.

The first is our granddaughter Raegan visiting what appears to be Santa, fresh out on parole. It reminds us of the line in Elf, "You smell like beef and cheese...you don't smell like Santa!"

children: Day 3 of the 12 Days of Thanks Giving - My Brood - 11/14/17 06:34 AM
What a gift Debbie has given us this month with the 12 Days of Thanks Giving Challenge. Focusing daily on what we're thankful for should continue throughout the year. It's truly a delight to see all of the posts in the Rain of late, filled with gratitude. Thanks Debbie, you are loved and appreciated.

Day 3 of Thanks Giving

My children and their children are my magnus opus, of sorts.

The pride and love I feel for them nearly bursts my heart at times. Each has grown into a kind and wonderful person. They are successful in different ways; a strong young woman and registered nurse, an avid sportsman and sales manager, and an … (19 comments)

children: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - Almost Wordless Wednesday - 05/03/17 07:41 AM

This little girl has star power. She lights up rooms and sparkles and shines wherever she goes. This is Raegan, our youngest granddaughter, playing hide and seek with her mama. However, Kelsea tells us it's quite easy to find her - just follow the giggles.
Children have an uncanny ability to find fun in the most simple things. They see magic in moments and celebrate life with joy and spontaneity. Spirits soar when you believe life is full of wonder. We'll be mindful today, to see the world through a child's eyes.

It's almost time to go back to school in Camas!
It seems like yesterday when we offered you some ideas to do with children during the summer months once " School's Out."  Now it's already time to prepare for "Back to School!"
The school year officially begins on Wednesday, September 2, 2015. No doubt many families will enjoy one last hurrah on the Labor Day weekend, prior to getting back into the school routine. Therefore, many people are getting ready to shop for school supplies.
Here are links to the various schools in Camas to make your job a little easier.

children: Young Runners - Starting out on the right foot. - 10/19/14 02:42 AM
My grandchilren who live in Bend, Oregon,  recently took part in a festive fun run sponsored by their school. Their dad ran the longer course while they finished a one-mile event in high spirits. Teaching children the joy and fun of exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I applaud the parents and educators who do what they can to keep kids moving!

children: Trick or Treat - Give me something good to eat. - 10/29/13 07:39 AM
Trick or treat - give me something good to eat. It's always a big dilemma this time of year. Do we buy candy with children in mind, knowing we may get a handful (at best) of trick-or-treaters in our gated neighborhood.? Or, do we buy candy that we like, knowing we'll have a stash of our favorites in the freezer for months ahead?
In other neighborhoods where we've lived, with large groups of trick-or-treaters, the norm would be to purchase a variety of kid-loved favorites. We'd have bags of Snickers, Milky Ways, Reeses, Snickers and M&M's on hand.  As the night wore … (25 comments)

children: She'll always be the flower girl to me. - 10/01/13 05:46 AM
She’ll always be the flower girl to me.

My granddaughter Skyler was the flower girl in my daughter’s recent wedding. Well, at least she was supposed to be the flower girl. Sadly, she got cold feet at the very last moment and refused her role of scattering rose petals ahead of the bride.

She shunned her moss-covered basket and retreated back inside the big, old stone building. You could hear her sobs echoing from the walls during the first part of the ceremony, the disappointment and sadness evident, shyness had overcome her.

One of the photographer’s snapped this … (22 comments)

children: The Reluctant Ladybug - 07/28/13 03:20 AM
The Reluctant Ladybug
In theory, putting on a bug costume sounds pretty good to a 3 1/2 year old boy. Apparently though, Connor missed the “lady” bug part of the description.

Since a neighbor boy was dressed as a moth, my little grandson wanted to be a bug too. However, once he realized the costume had a tutu, he quickly dissolved into misery.
I’m happy to report that once Connor got his sister’s old Halloween costume off, he rebounded with smiles and giggles. It’s hard to keep a playful bug boy down.

children: Winter Break for School kids in Clark County, WA - 12/04/12 10:21 PM
Winter Break for School Kids in Clark County, WA
Remember how exciting it was as a kid to get a break for the holidays? Regardless of religious affiliation, most of us looked forward to the rituals and traditions of the season. Plus, the thought of sleeping in for a few weeks. Add to that, the excitement of a family vacation - skiing, ice skating, or just a visit to grandma’s with the promise of presents! As we hung our outside lights this weekend, we enjoyed watching a young neighbor boy as he pulled a squeaking red wagon through the streets. He … (14 comments)

children: Star Wars - The Force is with us. - 11/16/12 11:57 PM
'Star Wars - The Force is with us."
My sons and my three young grand sons will be pleased - Star Wars figures have made into the Toy Hall of Fame. Well deserved says this mom and "Oma." Luke Skywalker,  Princess Leia, Darth Vader and the gang appear to have timeless appeal.
Star Wars has the right stuff for the Toy Hall of Fame. Longevity is a key factor for getting into the Toy Hall of Fame. In addition, the toy has to be easily recognizable, foster learning, creativity or discovery through play, and  endure popularity over generations - … (17 comments)

children: Backyard Camp-out in Clark County, WA - 08/07/12 09:40 AM

Recently, our two grandchildren who live in Bend, Oregon came for a weekend visit. Four and a half year old Skyler, and two and a half year old Connor are both outside kids. They are happiest digging in the dirt, playing with … (13 comments)

Hop on board the Magic School Bus from January 22 through February 19 at Newmark Theatre in Portland.   This isn't the "Magic Bus," ala Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. The Magic School Bus is a series of children's books written about Science. Ms. Frizzle, Wanda, Carlos, and the other students at Walkerville Elementary are putting on a play about climate change, and we know what that means - field trip. WAHOO!
After 25 years of scientific adventures, the Magic School Bus makes its first-ever landing in Portland at the Newmark Theatre. The Frizz and her class circle the globe, … (15 comments)

children: Camas Boo Bash - 10/28/11 06:23 AM
Camas Boo Bash
Several times a year, the city of Camas and downtown merchants literaly close the streets for children and families. In June, it's the Camtown Youth Festival  and in October, it's the Boo Bash.

My son and his family are visting this month and I thought the Boo Bash would be a perfect event for 4 year old Sage and his 12 month old brother, Adler.

The Boo Bash proved to be a delightful afternoon event spent with my daughter in law Becky, and my two Alaska grandsons. Does it get much better than this?  This "Oma" doesn't … (23 comments)

children: Camas Library Sleepover - Including Plenty of Bedtime Stories - 09/21/11 06:07 AM
Camas Library Sleepover - Plenty of Bedtime Stories Once upon a time, children in the Kingdom known as Camas, were invited to bring their pajamas and a sleeping bag for a night of fun - including plenty of bedtime stories.  K through 6th grade youngsters were enchanted with idea of spending the night at the Camas Library Sleepover.
Parents were also quite happy, as they were mandated to accompany their children for the overnight adventure. The Library also promised a pizza feast, worthy of Kings and Queens, beginning at 7 PM. After supper, the children (and their parents) were encouraged to … (18 comments)

children: Labor Day 2011 - Labor Day 1978 - 09/05/11 03:32 AM
Labor Day holds special meaning for me. On September 1st, 1978 (Labor Day weekend, that year)  I spent the day “in labor” delivering my son Nathan. And if Labor Day is a day to celebrate worker’s achievements, I can tell you a lot of work was going on in that little hospital in Juneau, Alaska.
Nate is 33 years old this year, and worth every hour it took to bring him into the world. Our family and friends recognize him as "the guy” everyone wants to be with. His easy-going and gentle demeanor is a gift to all he encounters. … (20 comments)

children: Caught - Chocolate Handed - 07/17/11 05:34 AM
Caught - Chocolate Handed
Little Connor loves chocolate syrup and managed to get it off the kitchen counter with the help of a chair.  His parents, patient beyond their years, let him play for a while in the sticky mess.
Do you have the patience to allow people their moments of indulgence? Do you allow yourself those moments? Hopefully, the answer to both questions is yes.
This picture captures the simple joy in a moment - and the wisdom of the people in authority (parents, in this case) to let it happen.

children: Light a Candle - Feed a Child - 07/13/11 09:49 AM
Light a Candle,Feed a Child.

There’s something quite magical about candle light. It softens the edges and smooths the lines of rooms, and faces. Candles evoke romance and elegance, and their glow warms up otherwise cold spaces.

Right now, one of my favorite candle companies is giving us a chance to buy a candle, “Light a candle and feed a child.”

The Light a Candle, Feed a Child,” campaign is a partnership between Bridgewater Candle Company and an organization called, Rice Bowls. The campaign, which is just over … (2 comments)
