family: A Taste of Alaska - Juneau in July - 07/07/15 04:18 AM
Juneau in July!
We're back from our annual trek to my former hometown of Juneau, Alaska.  What a great visit, and for the most part, we lucked out with good weather. Here are a few photos of some of our adventures.
The boat is called the "Glacier Soul." (My son Sean and his two-son crew!)

family: And Baby Makes Three! - 06/25/15 02:12 AM
You're probably getting sick and tired of the new grand children updates from me.  First, we welcomed little Raegan Leigh (baby girl) to our family in February, and now Holden Christopher Janes (baby boy). He was born on June 22, 2015. His siblings, Skyler and Connor think he's a keeper. We do too. ( And now you know what I've been up to this past week!)   I promise, nobody is pregnant and this should be last announcement - at least for a while. :)
   Connor, Skyler, and Baby Holden.
"Sky" is especially smitten with her baby brother.

family: Happy Father's Day - June 21, 2015 - 06/21/15 01:10 AM
Dada's, Daddy's, Dad's, Father's, Papa's.
Regardless of what you call him, this man has the potential to influence your life in many ways. I'm one of the lucky ones, my father's strong character and commitment to ethics and personal responsibility has has had a powerful impact on my life. Plus, he has a great sense of humor. He's still around too - next door in fact. I really am lucky.
Happy Father's Day to all of the wonderful men in our life. Let's remember to tell them everyday how important they are to us, not just on one day in June.  Here's a picture of our family moving from … (18 comments)

family: Wha SUP Sunday? - 05/17/15 02:00 AM
I just returned from a quick trip to Bend, Oregon, where my son and his family live. Here's granddaughter Skyler on a Stand Up Paddle board in the Deschutes River. Today she is taking part in the kids version of the annual Pole, Pedal, Paddle relay event. My heart is cheering her on this morning. Happy Sunday to you too.

family: Piano recital, a leopard, an audit, and a Birthday! - 12/17/14 06:03 AM
What a week - and I’m missing my Rain time.  We’ve been to Bend, and back, for a granddaughter’s first piano recital and a grandson’s first play. Needless to say, the family (kid) time put us both in a festive mood. Today is my husband’s birthday, and the celebration continues at home.
The Carol of the Bells with Miss Margaret on the pedals.

The mighty leopard ponders his next move.

Not even a routine audit from the Washington Department of Licensing can put a lid on our joy. Although admittedly, news of the audit did come close. Needless to say, we’re busy as … (18 comments)

family: Seniors - And the Shadow Client - 03/22/14 12:47 AM
Seniors - And the “Shadow” Client
One of our favorite people recently downsized from his large suburban home to a small condo. This friend and client, in his late 80’s, personifies aging at its best. He’s healthy, active, enjoys traveling, collecting and restoring antique toys, and cares for his grandson three days a week.
His wife died several years ago and he decided it was time to make a change. Some of his goals:
1. Smaller and more manageable home.
2. Independent living, with similar age group of people in the community.
3. A place within close proximity to his daughter and grandson.

family: Snow Angel Monday! - 12/08/13 11:27 PM
Snow Angel Monday!
Elf on the Shelf is a tradition my grandchildren love. When a family adopts an elf and gives it a name, the elf receives its Christmas magic. Each night, the elf flies back to the North Pole to report the children’s daily behavior to Santa. This helps Santa manage his naughty and nice lists.
There are several things families need to know. First of all, you’re not supposed to touch the elf, (to do so would rob him of magic), yet when the kids wake each morning the elf has moved to a different spot in the house. … (33 comments)

family: She'll always be the flower girl to me. - 10/01/13 05:46 AM
She’ll always be the flower girl to me.

My granddaughter Skyler was the flower girl in my daughter’s recent wedding. Well, at least she was supposed to be the flower girl. Sadly, she got cold feet at the very last moment and refused her role of scattering rose petals ahead of the bride.

She shunned her moss-covered basket and retreated back inside the big, old stone building. You could hear her sobs echoing from the walls during the first part of the ceremony, the disappointment and sadness evident, shyness had overcome her.

One of the photographer’s snapped this … (22 comments)

family: Thanksgiving's "with me in spirit run." - 11/22/12 03:20 AM
Thanksgiving's "with me in spirit" run.
This morning, my daughter, who currently lives in Denver, ran in the city's traditional Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Knowing that it's also a tradition for me to run on Thanksgiving morning, she asked me to run the event with her, from afar.
Therefore, at 10:15 Denver time and 9:15 locally,  we both began our 4 mile runs. It was easy to imagine her lively spirit every step of the way and see her face reflected in the beauty of nature. Strong relationships are like that - you can feel the connection regardless of where you … (19 comments)

family: Happy Sunday - Sundae - 11/17/12 11:11 PM
Happy Sunday - Sundae Happy Sunday - Sundae is a term my mother uses for the ice cream treats she creates for family members who visit on Sundays.  She’s been making the sundaes for years and in the traditional manner most would expect.  Imagine the younger family members delight in seeing a scoop of ice cream drizzled with chocolate or caramel syrup,  marshmallow cream, and sprinkled with nuts ( or berries, if you choose) and topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
Happy Sundae - Banana Split? A happy sundae at moms, can also be a banana split - essentially the … (19 comments)

family: Star Wars - The Force is with us. - 11/16/12 11:57 PM
'Star Wars - The Force is with us."
My sons and my three young grand sons will be pleased - Star Wars figures have made into the Toy Hall of Fame. Well deserved says this mom and "Oma." Luke Skywalker,  Princess Leia, Darth Vader and the gang appear to have timeless appeal.
Star Wars has the right stuff for the Toy Hall of Fame. Longevity is a key factor for getting into the Toy Hall of Fame. In addition, the toy has to be easily recognizable, foster learning, creativity or discovery through play, and  endure popularity over generations - … (17 comments)

family: Fanciful Friday - 11/08/12 10:22 PM
My son and his family are in Hawaii for a much needed vacation after a busy (they have an adventure guiding company) and rainy summer and fall in Juneau, Alaska.  The boys, Sage and Adler are enjoying the outdoors and playing in the sun, as you can see in these photos. In fact, apparently it's tough to go inside when you're in Kona - even when it's nap time.

On a ship with tattered sails, I dream of rides on humpback whales ~

I know it to be true, that the ocean sea is blue.

family: Backyard Camp-out in Clark County, WA - 08/07/12 09:40 AM
Our Backyard Camp-Out in Clark County, WA Camp-outs are big fun for children. There's certainly something special about a house, constructed of mostly fabric, where the entire family gathers. And, with summer now in full swing you might want to consider pitching a tent in your Clark County, WA backyard and having a camping adventure with your kids.
Recently, our two grandchildren who live in Bend, Oregon came for a weekend visit. Four and a half year old Skyler, and two and a half year old Connor are both outside kids. They are happiest digging in the dirt, playing with … (13 comments)

family: Sunday Gravy, The Oscars and Great Rooms - 02/26/12 01:49 AM
There's a pot of Sunday gravy, also know as red sauce, simmering on the stove in our kitchen. It's my Italian husband's recipe, so secret, I don't know all of the ingredients. However, I do know that it smells heavenly.
Garlic, tomatoes and fresh basil are the most distinctive and aromatic notes wafting through the air. It's a familiar and soothing smell, and an important aspect of tonight's special dinner - Chicken Parmesan.
There's generally more effort put into Sunday's dinners. At times, family members or friends join us for an informal celebration. Tonight, it's just the two of us, … (36 comments)

family: I'm thankful for Jimmy Buffet (not, Buffett) - 11/09/11 09:26 AM
ActiveRain/DocSign Contest - I’m Thankful for Jimmy Buffet (not Buffett, although, I like him too.) Thanksgiving is just around the corner, my father Jim, aka Jimmy Buffet ( because of his eating habits, not his musical ability - that’s Buffett ), will reside over the festivities with his usual sense of humor and eagerness - to eat!
Therefore, I’m remembering how grateful I am to have dad around. Over ten years ago his heart stopped during a so-called routine hospital procedure. My mother knew when she heard “Code Blue” over the hospital speakers, that it was dad.

family: "Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light - 07/04/11 03:40 AM
Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light.

Good morning and Happy Fourth of July, "Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light. This day has such profound and historical symbolism as expressed by our flag, day-long celebrations, and tonight, the "bombs bursting in air."
We will be attending a country barbecue and a private Fourth of July celebration tonight, complete with the shooting of a cannon - not a Canon. (A cannon! Hope it's legal) Our friends and some family members with be on hand, including parents and a sister. There will be a … (4 comments)

family: Baby, you can leave your hat on... - 06/19/11 07:10 AM
Baby, you can leave your hat on.

In honor of Father's Day, I thought I'd share a video of my beautiful little grandson playing with his hat.  Connor's about a year and a half and has his Oma completely wrapped. This was taken on my iPhone so forgive the quality, it's not the best. Hopefully it will bring a smile to your face. Happy Father's Day, Happy (Grand) Father's Day from Connor.
It's quite short, as is he at this age.

family: Happy Father's Day from Fish-bait - 06/17/11 04:10 AM
Happy Father's Day from Fish-bait.

“Fishbait”, “Half-pint” and “Me-too,”  all nicknames from oh, so many years ago. Years when you taught me how to fish, appreciate nature and gave me enough attitude to believe “the world was mine for the taking.”  I’ll bet you regretted that last one for a few years.
Sure, we had some arguments that ended in hurt feelings and tears. You’ll remember it as my stubborn phase, somewhere between adolescence and young adult-hood. However, those heated discussions gave me the opportunity to figure out my own values and helped me determine which ones were worth … (8 comments)
