State Ranking of Multigenerational Homes - The Top 10

Bernie and I really enjoy keeping up with the latest news about Multigenerational homes and lifestyles. After all, it is one of our real estate niches. As agents who have lived in a multigen home for 15 years, and have specialized in selling them for well over a decade, we certainly have a passion for it.

Therefore, we were pleased to find this recent online article about the ranking of states with the most multigen households written on Stacker.com.

It opens with the sobering reminder that Covid-19 risks increase when different age group live under one roof. This is especially … (37 comments)

multigenerational homes: Multigenerational Home Sales - Market Report May 2019 - 05/13/19 08:48 AM

Multigenerational Homes Are An Evolving MarketMultigenerational home sales are an evolving niche in the U.S. real estate market. This is true in Clark County WA as well. "Multigen" is where two or more generations decide to move back in together.

There are many advantages, financial and emotional. Often elderly parents move in with their adult children. This is much more desirable than a nursing home, or an independent living facility, which can be very costly. Sometimes grandparents are capable of share in child-rearing responsibilities. Everyone benefits from this arrangement.

multigenerational homes: The History of MultiGenerational Homes in the U.S. - 01/27/19 09:42 AM

History of the MultiGen Homes in America

Many people think the idea of Multigenerational living in the US is a new trend. That’s simply not the case. In the early 1900’s it was quite common for older adults to live with their adult children and grandchildren. According to Forbes, in 1940, about one quarter of Americans lived in a home shared with three or more generations. However, after the WW11, the American family household shifted as returning war veterans built suburbs. The norm for American family lifestyles in the 1950’s was mom and dad living in a home with their minor children. … (17 comments)

multigenerational homes: What Defines a MultiGenerational Home? - 01/18/19 08:35 AM

If you want to change the world, go home and love your family. - Mother Theresa
What defines a Multi-gen home?  We're always amazed by the assumptions we hear. First of all, a mom and dad, or one parent, and children under the age of 25 is not multigenerational living. That's a nuclear family. Boomerang children, 25 and older, who come back home after a divorce, or a job loss, do count as a multi-gen living situation.  Generally, the reasons are financial - and short-term. The idea is to get the adult child back on solid ground for independent living. However, if a child, married or not, with children, … (22 comments)

multigenerational homes: Our Multi-Generational Home -- Taking the Time We Need - 10/13/18 09:13 AM

This photo popped up on my Facebook time-line today - what a bittersweet reminder.

It's a shot from three years ago. We'd lived in our Multi-generational home for about a month at the time, and dad and mom enjoyed the outdoor fire while the rest of us fed the flames with fallen limbs. It tugged at my heart when I saw it this morning, coincidentally it's been exactly one month since dad died.

It prompted me to share this update.

The uninitiated doesn't realize all the legal details that have to be handled when someone dies. In his case, we have notified Social Security, his Alaska retirement benefits, the health insurance … (26 comments)

multigenerational homes: Goodbye for Now, Dad - News from Our MultiGen Home - 09/15/18 05:53 AM

We knew it would happen one day. After all, we were prepared for it - or so we thought. It turns out, you're never quite prepared to lose someone you love. For those of you who have followed the saga of our multigenerational home, you know we chose our living arrangement when my dad was diagnosed with Dementia. In addition, dad had a multitude of other health issues including congestive heart failure. On Thursday morning, September 13, 2018 dad finally passed. Quietly and without drama, just the way he wanted.

Since  coming home from the the hospital in March, we have spent many hours taking care of him. … (41 comments)

multigenerational homes: Multi-Generational Niche - We were Multi-Gen before it was Cool - 07/20/18 02:34 PM

Our Multi-generational niche actually found us. Fortunately, when you pay attention, life generally gives you plenty of signals. In 2007, we moved into duplex style townhomes with my parents in one unit, us in the other. We not only liked the location and the gated neighborhood, but it was the perfect set-up, at that time, to care for my parents and retain complete autonomy.
Around 2014, we started getting requests from clients for homes with room for family members - a parent, or parents, adult children, and often, grandchildren. It resonated within, as we were already living the multi-gen lifestyle. Not only did we understand the appeal, we knew … (34 comments)

multigenerational homes: A St. Patrick's Day Blessing from Our MultiGenerational Home in Camas - 03/17/18 12:40 PM

Last week's trip to the ER confirmed what our multigenerational household had already guessed. Dad's medical condition is worsening. Specifically, the medications they use to keep his heart going are damaging his kidneys, and so on.  His doctors tell us there is no going back, his heart is severely damaged and the rest of his organs are getting weaker.  It's a matter of time.

We feel extremely fortunate to have hospice involved in dad's care. They are a true life-line at this point and help us figure out the best way to keep him comfortable. Dad is more than ready for this final journey.  He wakes … (23 comments)
