pets: Finnegan the Bird Dog - All American Pet Photo Day - 07/11/20 08:21 AM
Finnegan loves to watch birds. In this photo, he's out on the deck watching the hummingbirds visit our feeder this morning.

Thanks to Kathy Streib, we learned today is All American Pet Photo Day. How fortuitous, as we're always looking for an excuse to take a photo of this little cutie.

Feel free to share photos of your pets in the comments, we'd love to see them.

pets: Help Keep Pets safe on the Noisy Fourth of July Holiday - 07/02/19 09:44 AM
Tips to Help Pets on the Fourth of July

Our white Golden Retriever, McKinley, doesn't understand the loud sizzles and booms of the Fourth of July holiday. Therefore, we do our best to minimize and mask the noise. And, we let him on the bed for cuddles, in the event he needs comfort.

His veterinarian's office, Orchard Hills Animal Hospital in Washougal, Washington, has some good advice for pet owners as we approach the big day. They shared this infographic on their Facebook page, and we thought it was worth sharing.

We also like the idea of taking dogs for a long walk early in the day, before … (12 comments)

pets: It's National Pet Day - Show the Love - 04/11/18 08:28 AM
A couple of years ago we celebrated National Pet Day on the Lacamas Heritage Trail with McKinley.  We not only had a great time, but were thrilled to see the Camas Lilies in full bloom. Not sure if we'll get out on the trail again today, but we will shower our Mac plenty of love - much like we do every day of the week. Happy National Pet Day.

pets: Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix - Warning to Pet Owners - 05/16/16 01:41 AM
Dogs and Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Soil Don’t Mix
(Poor, sick Mac on his way to the Animal Hospital - the cone is to keep him from pulling out the IV catheter.)
Here’s a warning to all pet owners - there’s something in Miracle-Gro’s Organic Choice Potting Mix that attracts dogs ( and maybe cats). We think it’s probably the funky smell of the composite material. My sister had put the soil in large pots flanking a patio, and hadn’t yet planted them with flowers.  At any rate, our Golden Retriever Mac found it so irresistible that he ate clumps of the soil over several … (71 comments)

pets: Alpaca Adoration and Dreaming in Clark County, WA - 04/04/16 04:05 AM

Alpaca Adoration and Dreaming
Alpacas make me feel all warm and fuzzy - I just love them! Don't ask me when this adoration began, it's tough to pinpoint. Perhaps the moment I laid eyes on my first one. There's something kind and friendly about them - and whimsical. If they were smaller, I'd ensure we had a dozen! My mom, who lives with us, recently informed me that she loves them too.
However, regardless of our admiration for them and our acre-plus property in Camas, we will not be getting any alpacas in the near future. They love company, and as herd animals, it's not fair to have … (18 comments)

pets: Doggone dogs! - 11/11/13 02:05 AM
Our white Golden Retriever McKinley, aka Mac, is a really wonderful dog and friend. However, occasionally he still likes to chew on things he shouldn't. Usually, one of our highly coveted smart wool socks. However, a few days ago he decided to shred ( and EAT) one of my shirts. The ENTIRE shirt.
When he showed us the remaining small scrap of material, we quickly searched the house for remnants, hoping that he really hadn't eaten the whole garment. We looked under beds, upstairs, downstairs, and in the back of closets - to no avail. He'd consumed the entire shirt - … (51 comments)

pets: Strawberry Pug Forever - 06/27/11 11:36 AM
Strawberry Pug Forever The first summer we grew strawberries (our favorites), we were very excited to see them mature and start to ripen.  But one day we started noticing little chunks were missing from a few – as if something was nibbling at them.  At first we assumed it was the birds, or perhaps another wild critter stealing our ripest and most delicious berries. We also noticed the culprit only ate the bottom ones in the pot.  Could it be a slug or two or three at night, we wondered?

But as vigilant as we were, we never … (11 comments)
