Homeownership – “Never Pay Another Man’s Mortgage”

Please disregard the lack of political correctness but, this statementwas made during a time that we women weren't quite so sensitive! Seriously, made by Warren Buffet in an interview that I heard back in the 80′s, this comment had a lasting impact on me.  If I think about it, back then, I didn’t really even think about the fact that he had said ‘man’ and not ‘man or woman!’ All that said, I took what he said to heart and refused to ever be a tenant. While I realize that everyone cannot afford to be … (13 comments)

Homeownership - An ActiveRain Challenge - June 2019
June is National Homeownership Month! The ActiveRain challenge this month is, of course, centered around the theme of the month.
Now is a great time to reflect on the many benefits of homeownership  Homeownership is a good way to build up wealth that can be passed along to your family as well. Whether you rent or own, you are paying a mortgage. Yours when you own - your landlord’s when you rent.

What does homeownership mean to YOU? The challenge this month is to share just that - easy peasy! Whether you’re a real estate … (145 comments)

Book Smart - Tigger or Eeyore?
Yes, this is the me that you'll meet when we are finally face-to-face - well, maybe without the books on my head though! My name is Sam Smith and my entire life, my friends have dubbed me a 'bookworm,' hence, the name of my self-portrait, 'Book Smart.'
Several years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare form of ocular cancer. As a full-time Realtor®, I put my career on hold...but, only for about a minute! Chemotherapy and radiation therapy became a routine that I worked into my busy lifestyle. I continued running my real estate business, even when I had … (49 comments)

New Chapters - Aging, Love and Home
If you have an ounce of romanticism in you, you know what I mean when I say that witnessing love that lasts for decades is such a beautiful treat. You see the rare couple who are celebrating 40, 50 or 60 years or more together and the gleam in their eyes when they look at one another or listen to the other one speak, is still as bright as though they were 20 years old. You know the couple - the wife is the first to laugh at the husband's jokes; the husband lovingly grasps his wife's hand when she's reminiscing about … (11 comments)

Weltanschauung: the guiding principles and philosophy of an organization; a world view
We understand that the value of the ActiveRain community rests entirely with its members. We admire the spirit of real estate professionals and believe our goal is to fully engage their talents and knowledge for the benefit of all members of the real estate community. There isn't a day that goes by here in the Rain that I don't either have an 'ah-ha' moment or learn something to help my business. If you take the time to read each day here, … (44 comments)

Be Useful, Honorable & Compassionate - Make a Difference
What inspires me?
I took a page out of Michael Jacobs’ book and pondered Carol Williams' challenge for nearly a month! Oh, there are so many quotes to live by but, digging deep into the ‘inner me,’ I realized my motivator isn’t all about my own success.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

I began my young adult life in college, tutoring other nursing students in math and … (87 comments)

Thanksgiving Gratitude 2018
I'd like to give a big shout-out to Debbie Reynolds for hosting her annual Thanksgiving challenge. This year, we were challenged to write 10 posts about that for which we are most thankful. I'm sure you have read some of the wonderful entries - I know I have and have completely enjoyed each and every one that I have read.

Here is my list of things for which I am grateful this year...

Thankfulness - 2018 - The Good Ole US of A
Thankful for Changing Seasons 2018
Thankfulness (DAY 3) - My ActiveRain Family
Thankfulness (DAY 4) - Finding my Soul Mate

Thankfulness (Day 9) - Fur Babies, Glorious Fur Babies
On day 9 of Debbie Reynolds' Thanksgiving Challenge, I thought I would share one of my passions in life - sweet, sweet fur babies! Oh, how they make our days, don't they? The unconditional love is unmatched in this life and one of my favorite times of the day is arriving home, being greeted by my 3 adopted family members.
My entire family supports pet adoption and we always go with the intent of 'saving a dog' (or cat in Charlotte's case [our cat, pictured on the right]) and we never fail to realize, during the car ride home, that … (27 comments)

Thankfulness (DAY 8) - THE Best Clients a Charlotte Realtor® Could Wish For
When you think about it, most of us began in this business by helping a friend or family member or someone that one of our friends knew, buy or sell a home. And, if we were really lucky, it was a double - they were selling and also buying in the area!

*Referral from past client - one wonderful transaction!
That is, indeed, how I began in the business and that is how I have continued over the years! Best friends referred their friends, who later referred their friends, family and co-workers and … (29 comments)

Thankfulness (Day - 5) - Oh Thank Heaven for Little Boys
Those who know me, know my family is the center of my life - second only to my faith! My boys are 18 months apart, now 29 & 30 and neither certainly are not 'little' any longer! Those boys have been the apples of my eye since the day they were each born.
Matthew is the oldest and he embodies everything an older child typically does - he's very independent and has the biggesst heart of anyone I know. He's also incredibly confident as a young adult but, has not always been that way. … (25 comments)

Changing it Up for Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS,'s October Challenge
I'm loving this challenge this year and wish we'd done this one each year in the past too - we may have to make this an annual challenge! THANKS PAUL!
I'm a big believer in being 'real' and having current profile pictures - certainly nothing more than a couple of years old. Our online photos are important to clients who haven't yet met us and who are attempting to 'find' us, based on the online photo they've seen. I can't tell you how many people I've met who look nothing like their online or business card … (32 comments)

OCTOBER CHALLENGES - A Fun Month in the Rain
After several months of 'serious' when it comes to contests & challenges, we thought we would lighten up the month of October with two fun challenges! We've already begun receiving entries into both and love that everyone is happy to have some fun in the Rain this month.
I'm sure you've heard about both challenges but, in case you haven't, here's a brief run-down of the two being hosted this month:
This challenge, hosted by Brian England, challenges us all to post something personal about ourselves...and then, respond to questions in response to … (11 comments)

ActiveRain Challenges & Contest Ideas - What's Yours?
Most members have always enjoyed our ActiveRain Challenges & Contests. This past month, we took a break and received some valuable feedback about the monthly challenges. For the most part, we really missed the contests but, the most powerful feedback we received by not having one last month was twofold:
members want to learn something from them and/or you just want to have fun participating in them and/or reading them!  So, this month, the only contest/challenge we will be hosting is this:   We want your suggestions, ideas, topics!  What do you want to learn from other members? What … (185 comments)

Mr. Trivia Asks the Questions AND Answers His Phone!
The challenge this month to phone an ActiveRain member with whom you’ve never spoken. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with many members but, there are so many that I could call…now, who do I call?
I was so happy to finally have the opportunity to meet Wayne Martin! After years of following Wayne, it was finally good to put the voice with the words I’d read for years.
I call him Mr. Trivia! If you don’t follow Wayne and you love trivia, you’re missing out on a daily series of 4 trivia questions - … (9 comments)

Reaching Out - Learning a Bit More About Lynnea Miller
I received an email from Lynnea earlier this month, asking for a referral in another part of my state. Excited to share that I have a wonderful referral partner in that area of the state, and instead of just emailing her back, I picked up the phone and called. I'm SO glad that I did as I learned what I already knew about our Bend, Oregon Realtor® in the Rain...
Lynnea began her real estate career working with her husband, a general contractor, marketing his homes. She then got her real estate license and joined … (19 comments)
