Ladybug!  Ladybug!Fly away home.Your house is on fire. And your children all gone.

All except one,And that's little Ann,For she crept underThe frying pan.

Britain, c.1744

In Medieval England farmers would set torches to the old hop (used in flavoring beer) vines after the harvest in order to clear the fields for the next planting. This poem was sung as a warning to the ladybugs that were still crawling on the vines in search of aphids. The ladybugs' children (larvae) could get away from the flames, but the pupae, referred to as "Nan" in some versions, … (26 comments)

virtual tour: How Does A Bird Become Extinct? - The Story of the California Brown Pelican - 09/20/09 02:07 AM

This was going to be a Speechless Sunday post. But then I looked up information on the California Brown Pelican, ( I always like to learn about the animals I photograph), and was stunned to read their history. Excerpted from the International Bird Rescue Research Center In the 1800's, it became the fashion for ladies to wear hats with long, beautiful plumes from a variety of birds. To cater to this suppy for the millinery industry, birds were slaughtered by the MILLIONS. By 1903, the price of feathers had reached 80 dollars per ounce - much more than the price … (23 comments)

virtual tour: Help with YouTube Problems - 09/15/09 05:47 AM

Is anyone else having a problem with YouTube? I can't open it with IE or Firefox. Everything else works fine. This has gone on for 4 days now. At first I thought it was overloaded bandwidth, but apparently not. If anyone has a solution, I'd love to hear it.
I can't open my own page, I can't access my videos at all - and I can't even open Youtube with Google! What's up with this?
Thanks!
Debi

virtual tour: I entered a Photo Contest - and I need your votes! - 09/12/09 10:44 AM
Hey Everyone! A friend told me about a fall photo contest sponsored by the Gazette newspapers, and I decided to enter :) There is a part of the contest called "Peoples Choice" that's determined by voters, rather than the judges. The theme is Faces of Fall, and I entered this face:
If you have a minute, and wouldn't mind - I would love it if you'd vote for my photo! (assuming of course, that you like it....  :) Click here to vote

virtual tour: Wordy Wednesday From Colorado - A Surprise at the Beach! - 09/09/09 02:35 AM

I was standing next to a rock jetty on a beach during my San Diego visit last week, photographing this little Willet. All of a sudden, he started screaming (REALLY screaming!) and flapping, and took off. I thought I had gotten too close to him, and scared him. But I've never had a bird react to me like THAT!

Then, I looked to my left, and sitting on the jetty I saw this!

It wasn't me who scared the Willet. I never in a million years expected to see a HAWK at the beach, especially just … (23 comments)

Too often, we walk right by a thing of beauty without giving it even a moments thought... take the time to 'stop and smell the roses' today.
Everything has it's beauty but not everyone sees it. -Confucius

virtual tour: Light Painting Photography & 100K! - 08/17/09 05:53 PM

With this post I hit 100,000 points on AR! WhooHoo! The '100' in the photo above was not done with Photoshop. It's a photographic technique that originated in Germany, called Light Painting Photography. The technique involves setting up in a completely dark room, adjusting your camera settings, in this case shutter speed was set at 10 seconds, and the aperture at f5.6, (you would obviously require a tripod).   I was by myself, so I used a remote to trigger the shutter. With a pen light, I drew the 100 in the air in front of me. I … (34 comments)

virtual tour: Motivational Monday - The Art of God - 08/17/09 04:09 AM

The chess-board is the world; the pieces are the phenomena of the universe; the rules of the game are what we call the Laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance. - Thomas Huxley
