Ways to Burn Off Thanksgiving Dinner Calories

The day after has many of us feeling heavy and lethargic with the consuming of thousands of extra calories. Thanksgiving Dinner is when people tend to overeat and over-drink. Most of us don't realize that a traditional Thanksgiving meal can have as many as 3500 to 5000 calories. This is double what most of us should consume in an entire day.

It's not too late to take action and crank up your exercise regime to help burn more calories.

Gizmodo.com and News.health.com make these suggestions to get those calories burned up faster. Adding segments of one or two of these to your daily routine will … (18 comments)

thanksgiving: A Day of Thanks - Happy Thanksgiving All - 11/21/18 08:40 PM
Happy Thanksgiving
There is so much to be thankful for. I woke up another day in a warm and beautiful home with my wonderful husband to share it with. The aromas and baking are in the air and preparations are in the works to make things ready for family and friends to gather later today. There will be good food and conversation, lots of laughing and sharing.
There is so much to be thankful for.

thanksgiving: What Makes a Happy Thanksgiving? - 11/22/17 05:34 PM
What Makes Thanksgiving Day Special?

Thanksgiving Day is here and many families and friends will gather together to spend the day eating, visiting and watching football together. This is a tradition for some and pure enjoyment for others. What makes the day special for you?
For me, I focus on family and friends, my home and then go to thinking about my blessings. Every day I am thankful for my faith and how it gets me through each day. The abundances and comforts I have are not to be taken for granted. I am glad I can share with others.

The food and bounty we share … (16 comments)

thanksgiving: Serendipity Sundays - Thanksgiving Cactus - 11/19/17 02:37 PM
It's Thanksgiving Time
If you look around in Clarksville you will see signs of fall a precursor to winter. Just in the last week, the weather has changed and it feels like winter is on the way.
My Thanksgiving cactus knows that we are having an early Thanksgiving. The blooms are opening and it should be in full bloom by Thanksgiving Day. I don't know how it knows it is that time of year but it does.
My cactus has spiky leaves and the blooms resemble orchid blooms. This plant is not to be confused with a Christmas cactus which has larger blooms and smooth … (9 comments)

How to Stay Safe During the Holidays
The holidays are almost here and that means traveling for many of us. Personal safety is on our minds more than ever before and we need to be on high alert especially this time of year.
Holiday shopping has begun, be on guard and keep your packages and personal belongings secure and out of sight. Be aware of your surroundings and don't be afraid to speak up or reach out and question if something doesn't feel or look right.

If Traveling over Thanksgiving:
Ask a friend or neighbor to check on your home. Just driving by is not enough so ask the friend … (21 comments)

thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Cactus or Christmas Cactus? - 11/24/16 06:40 AM
Which Do You Have?
A post by Noah Seidenberg prompted me to find out more on this subject about my cactus. A couple of years ago I was given a beautiful cactus plant by one of my Thanksgiving dinner guests. It was covered in white blooms at the time. My friend told me it was not a Christmas Cactus but a Thanksgiving Cactus and that there is a difference. I thought she was being clever since it was in bloom on Thanksgiving Day.
I had never heard such a thing but did notice it bloomed last Thanksgiving and again this Thanksgiving. I have done some research … (24 comments)

thanksgiving: Giving Thanks for my Home - 11/23/16 06:15 PM
Giving Thanks for my Home
Owning a home is very special and not to be taken for granted. Home is more than a building or dwelling, it is a habitat, a sanctuary. I am thankful for my home each and every day.
When I wake up in the mornings, I love knowing that I am safe and sound in my home. All the children are grown so it is just me and my husband living here. We start off slow in the mornings with him getting up a full hour before me. I like those last few minutes in the bed dozing in … (11 comments)

thanksgiving: I Give Thanks for Our Military - 11/22/16 07:00 PM
I Give Thanks for Our Military
I live in a military town and every day I am reminded how important our military are to our country. I see the families affected by separation, by worry and stress and children that miss their parents at important school and social events.
Our military servicemen are on call day and night. It isn't a given that they will get holidays off or get to spend time with their families. I know that first hand because my Navy son doesn't get to come home for many holidays. We will not see him this Thanksgiving as he is … (15 comments)

thanksgiving: I Am Thankful for Travel - 11/21/16 10:32 AM
I Am Thankful for Travel
I love traveling and especially seeing our great country. I have been to about 40 of our 50 states and will see the rest over the next couple of years. There is so much to see in the way of parks, museums and beautiful geography that it is a quest of discovery. The people and food are different too and that is part of the great adventure.
It is quite a thrill visiting foreign countries but I don't have many of those under my belt,. So far I have traveled to about 15 other countries. I got a very … (33 comments)

thanksgiving: Food and Good Food is a Real Blessing - 11/18/16 09:15 AM
I Am Thankful for Food
In these days before Thanksgiving my thoughts have turned to food. It is a blessing to have plenty of food because so many go to bed hungry every night.  I am so thankful that my pantry is full and my freezer has many options for me to prepare a meal.
I am particular about my food and want it to have lots of flavor. I don't particularly like any fast food and like food prepared fresh with lots of herbs and spices. Given an option, I prefer to cook at home and satisfy whatever it is I am craving.
Getting a … (17 comments)

thanksgiving: Giving Thanks for Grandchildren - 11/16/16 09:19 AM
Grandchildren Are a Blessing
I am thankful for my grandchildren. I have 4 grandsons and they all live in town. That is very special and allows me to see them often and have them over to my house. They are so sweet and loving and tell me I am a good cook and they look forward to coming for a meal.
Once they get to my house they want to play, don't particularly want to eat and love being outside. We let them romp and run and don't put too many restrictions on them. That is what grandparents do.
This is a photo I … (18 comments)

thanksgiving: 10 Day Thanksgiving Post Challenge - 11/15/16 04:58 AM

Only 10 days to go and we will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day. This day is different for everyone depending where your family is located and your traditions. I know it is one of my favorite holidays of the year.

One thing we all have in common is that we are incredibly blessed. I am issuing a challenge to all. Starting today and each day until Thanksgiving Day write a post about something you are thankful for. It can be big or it can be small. Oftentimes the smallest blessings give the biggest joys.

Voicing our blessings makes them come to life and gets … (395 comments)

thanksgiving: How to Burn Off Those Extra Thanksgiving Dinner Calories - 11/28/15 12:03 PM
How to Burn Off Those Extra Thanksgiving Dinner Calories
Thanksgiving Dinner is the one meal during the year that people pile it on and overeat and overdrink. The traditional meal has from 3500 to 5000 calories. This is more than double the calories that most men need to eat in one day and could be triple what a woman watching her weight should take in.

To undo some of the damage you can ramp up your exercise and activities to burn more calories. These are suggestions from Gizmodo.com and News.health.com that will help you focus on getting those calories burned up faster. Assume you consumed an average … (27 comments)

thanksgiving: A Thank You Note Shows Real Thanksgiving - 11/25/15 08:47 AM
A Thank You Note Shows Real Thanksgiving

Thank you notes are becoming a thing of the past. The reason is that it is so much easier to just say thank you and or send a thank you text. In many cases even these acts of thanks are not extended. The younger generations don't understand the impact that a personally written thank you note can make. Some of them may never have written a thank you note.

It takes time to sit down and write  a thank you note. It takes time to put together some meaningful words and to locate an address and … (22 comments)

thanksgiving: What Makes Your Thanksgiving Day Happy? - 11/16/15 10:16 AM
What Makes Your Thanksgiving Day Happy?
I am confessing that I get really stressed out having a houseful of people on Thanksgiving Day. Twenty eight of the last 30 years I have hosted the meal and invite family and close friends to join in. Sometimes it is a dozen people and sometimes a couple of dozen. It is a buzz of activity and tons of work.

Once again I am hosting the dinner. After the meal is over when I am visiting and laughing with the guests all the stress goes away. It is the prep time before that ties me in knots. Finding … (29 comments)
