Philadelphia Gas Works also known as PGW, had a rule in the past regarding placing liens against the title of property for unpaid gas bills. This rule put landlords in a terrible position. If the tenant  or multiple tenants failed to pay the gas bill, the property owner would be required to pay the lien when selling the property. Buying a home can be better than renting in some situations. Overall, I like to say buying over renting, but the statement that "renting is throwing away money" is not necessarily true.
