In the wake of last year’s multiple foreclosure fraud and abuse settlements and ongoing dispersion of housing assistance funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), many former homeowners thought that they would be receiving some form of compensation for wrongful foreclosures and poorly-conducted foreclosures, loan modification attempts, and short sales. Many others hoped that the money would be used, as directed by the settlements and TARP itself, to help them work out a way to keep their homes. For something completely different, it appears that the federal government is over stepping its boundaries again. Representatives of the House have drafted a letter requesting copies of “any and all” communications between Elizabeth Warren and any state attorneys general since September 2010. The group is concerned that Warren has gone “far beyond the mere offering of advice” and that she may be unduly influencing the demands of the Attorney Generals in their negotiations with banks toward a settlement to resolve the robo-signer debacle.  She is the White House adviser setting up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  In one email that has … (5 comments)

A congressional panel reported yesterday that the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP)’s final cost will “be less than expected, in part because it will accomplish far less than envisioned for American homeowners.” Had the government done enough to prevent foreclosures instead of paying “a heck of a lot more attention [to] Wall Street” then the bill would have been closer to the projected $700 billion instead of a mere $25 billion, reported Tim Massad, the acting assistant secretary for financial stability of the U.S. Treasury.
