delaware center for horticulture: Horticulture Center to Discuss Secret Lives of Trees
- 02/04/13 12:32 AM
This should be a good talk--Discover the Extraordinary Secret Lives of Everyday Trees, with Nancy Ross Hugo. The talk will be at the Delaware Center for Horticulture in Trolley Square at 1810 N. Dupont Street in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday, February 6, from 7-8 PM. The talk is the first in the Series of four winter lectures sponsored by the Delaware Grounds Management Association. The first talk is sponsored by Kerns Brothers Tree Service (who did a great job trimming my trees this fall, and gave me the DCH members' discount). A complete schedule of talks and other activities is available. Nancy (0 comments)

If you are looking for fun things to do with a little green fun thrown in, you have to check out the Delaware Center for Horticulture in Trolley Square, Wilmington, Delaware. I attended the Garden Party and Open House (threatening rain made it a moveable feast) the other day and got my ticket for the Wilmington City Gardens People’s Choice Tour — June 16 & 17. Click link for ticket info and the DCH website. This is a new approach this year, suggested by the Buffalo NY Garden Walk I attended last year. When I showed Marcia Stephenson (Special Events person, (0 comments)
The DCH installed more than 1,300 trees across Delaware this year. That's a lot of trees! In New Castle, a group of 40 enthusiastic volunteers dug in for the last big planting of the fall season. Residents in Seaford and Wilmington got new trees this year, too. And Delaware City, stay tuned -- the DCH will be planting in your community next spring. If you want trees in your town, let the DCH know! http://www.thedch.org/

delaware center for horticulture: Gardens To Die For--Or At Least To Make You Extremely Jealous

The Delaware Center for Horticulture has announced the winners of the 2011 City Gardens Contest. Since I was one of the many judges for the Flower Garden Category, I am sharing with you pictures I took of the top 2 winners. On the left are some of the flowers in Becky McLaughlin's garden, which wraps around 4 sides of her corner apartment building. It is amazing that this tenant has totally transformed such a large space. The next picture is just a small corner of Martha Ann Szczerba's garden, which wraps around 3 sides of her duplex. Saturday brought the 2011 Water Garden Tour sponsored by Gateway Garden Center and The Delaware Center for Horticulture. My friend Brenda and I were looking for ideas, and they certainly presented themselves courtesy of some hard-working and talented gardeners. The first pond was in Hockessin, Delaware and was designed by a woman who has done professional landscaping. You can see flowering rush, chameleon plant, lobelia and lotus in this rock rimmed pond fed by a waterfall, all very naturalistically. The second pond, in Landenberg, Pennsylvania, had a pond with lotus and koi (named King Louie and Kyoko) all at (15 comments)
April 21 saw a burst of Earth Day activity in Rodney Square in Downtown Wilmington, Delaware. In honor of the occasion, a new button of the IN series was one of the take-homes for all who attended. I saw some familiar faces hosting displays, including the Delaware Center for Horticulture, and old friend Dee Durham and her daughter Lauren of Brandywine Sprouts with petitions to ban plastic bags in Delaware. The theme is BYOB (bring your own bag) Rodney Square was looking its Spring best and bustling with people on their lunch hours and school groups getting extra points for (4 comments)
The Delaware Center for Horticulture sponsored a trip this past week to Susquehanna State Park for a wildflower hike, led by veteran hiker Brenda Tunis. We walked about 4 miles along the Susquehanna River near the Conowingo Dam, about an hour from Wilmington, Delaware. What did we see? Well, the first photo is of the bluebells, which completely carpeted areas of the forest. The delicate beauty in the next picture is the yellow trout lily, which is a little harder to spot.
Then you can see the tiny Dutchman's Breeches, which look like a white pair of (4 comments)

delaware center for horticulture: Wilmington's Private City Gardens
- 06/25/10 04:21 AM
Last week was the Delaware Center for Horticulture Private Gems Garden tour, and as I have already reported on the country part of the tour, this article will feature those gardens in the City of Wilmington.
Being a sucker for flamingos, I loved this little fountain nestled in a garden in Union Park Gardens. And this side yard on Baynard Blvd. is the home of an Italian gardener who featured bounteous flowers as well as a very healthy fig tree.
These 2 pictures are of Samantha Hunter's garden on Baynard Blvd. which is very unusual for a few reasons. For (0 comments)
delaware center for horticulture: Chadds Ford Pennsylvania Garden Tour
- 06/19/10 09:25 AM
The Delaware Center for Horticulture hosted a garden tour today that concentrated on 2 areas--inside the City of Wilmington, and north of the City in the Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania area. Today we will talk about the Pennsylvania gardens.
The first property, with the classical vista, is owned by a former garden center owner who has lived for over 30 years in his home in Chadds Ford. On about 7 acres with well-tended paths, it crosses a stream and has numerous viewing areas among the mature canopy of trees. The second Chadds Ford garden has been tended by the same owners for 25 (0 comments)
