historic delaware homes: Delaware Celebrates "Let Freedom Ring" - 07/04/18 09:23 PM
At 2 p.m. on the Fourth of July, church bells (and maybe school bells) rang across the country as part of a nationwide celebration of the 242nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
And I'm sure each celebration took on a local flavor, just as the one here at Immanuel Church in New Castle, Delaware did. Brian Cannon, the Chief Interpreter at the historic Courthouse Museum here in New Castle, spoke of the importance of Separation Day in Delaware history. 13 children, representing the original 13 colonies, each rang a replica of the Liberty bell.
Mr. Cannon reminded us that June … (1 comments)

historic delaware homes: Winter Winter Go Away-A Gardener's Lament - 04/10/18 05:52 PM
I know the calendar is saying it's April and Spring is here, but really? Last night I drove through light snow to get to a meeting in Kennett Square. The wind was cruel and fellow attendees tried to talk about anything but the weather.
So, I get it. We have no control over it. But still my garden is trying to do its usual Springtime thing. Daffodils are still blooming, primroses are trying hard to bloom, the spirea is sending forth white sprays of tiny blossoms, and the flowering quince is trying very hard for its buds to open.

Begun in 1855 by wool  merchant Hanson Robinson, the manor house was a Gothic Revival mansion with crenelated towers. This would not do for duPont, who painstakingly removed all … (7 comments)

historic delaware homes: Woodburn, Delaware's Historic Governor's Residence - 04/08/14 03:38 AM
I visited Dover this last Saturday for First Saturdays in the First State, I had a chance to re-visit Woodburn, which was open to the public. This home, built c. 1798 by Charles Hillyard III, is one of the finest Middle Period Georgian historic houses in Delaware. Woodburn has served as the official residence of the Governor of Delaware since it was purchased by the state in 1965. Today, historians credit Woodburn's historical importance as much to the home's architecture as to its previous notable residents. Gentlemen farmers, landowners, an abolitionist, two U.S. Senators, two doctors, a dentist, a judge and … (2 comments)
