historic homes delaware: Happy Delaware Day! - 12/07/16 08:52 AM
Since 1933, the governors of Delaware have proclaimed December 7 as Delaware Day in honor of that day in 1787, when Delaware became the first state to ratify the Federal Constitution, thus making Delaware the first state in the New Nation.

Thanks to the efforts of a wise Delaware educator and legislator, Mr. E. Paul Burkholder along with the Rotary Club of Georgetown, a statewide effort was made in 1933 to have December 7 established as Delaware Day. He and this Rotary Club secured more than 6,000 signatures on petitions, which were presented to the Governor and to the … (2 comments)

historic homes delaware: Historic Buildings Hold Treasure Trove of Graffiti - 08/08/16 07:54 AM

Yes, Michael will really talk about graffiti, but once it morphs into  historic territory, it becomes a subject of scholarly research. I have heard him speak about all the “writing on the wall” at Old Swede’s Church in Wilmington, and there is a lot to learn. Join him at Stoney’s British Pub and learn all about it and lift a pint to history!

historic homes delaware: Yuletide at Winterthur Sparkles - 11/26/15 07:10 AM
Yuletide at Winterthur   A friend and  I took some time last night to see the Christmas Season exhibit in the duPont house at Winterthur Museum and Gardens .  The historic home was first occupied in 1839, with later additions. There are lots of Christmas trees, including one accented with purple to recall the wisteria design Tiffany lamp in the current Tiffany exhibit at the museum, and one with naturalistic elements, including a topping of a wasp nest and little wasps (my interpretation) flying around the tree.
And there is the crowd favorite, a dried flower tree in the conservatory, surrounded by … (10 comments)

historic homes delaware: Wilmington Library Shines in New Update - 03/19/14 05:44 AM
The Wilmington (Delaware) Free Library recently re-opened more than a year and a half after closing to undergo a $10.4 million rehab. My last memory of the “old” Library was working in the research room on the 3rd floor on a hot summer day with all the windows open,  not helping with the oppressive heat.   A recent visit to the Library revealed something completely different. The renovation – partly financed through the controversial sale of N.C. Wyeth illustrations – goes beyond new lighting, an improved air conditioning system and a modern entryway that includes a new handicapped entrance to the 92-year-old … (4 comments)
