talk to chuck: Wheatfield, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:43 PM
Wheatfield was founded in 1883 on land donated by Simon and Mae Thompson. Like many of the communities in Jasper and Newton counties, the land that Wheatfield occupies was once swampland. Wild rice, or swamp grass, grew in abundance before the land was drained in the mid 19th century.
Acres of this plant were said to look like fields of wheat. Another explanation for the town's name is that its center is in the spot where the first field of wheat was grown.
Wheat is still grown in the area today along with corn and soybeans. Had it not been for a law … (0 comments)

talk to chuck: Roselawn, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:30 PM
When you say "Roselawn" to a Northwest Indiana resident, what comes to mind is not necessarily what Roselawn-area residents want you to think first: nudist resorts and an airline disaster. In October 1994, American Eagle Flight 4184 crashed due to icing in a soybean field near Roselawn killing all 68 people aboard.
Roselawn is also home to two nudist resorts: Sun Aura and Ponderosa Sun Club. Thousands of people attend the annual Nudes-A-Poppin, an outdoor nude beauty pageant.
"They are very good business people," said Jennifer Whaley, director of Newton County Economic and Community Development. "They bring a positive economic impact to the … (1 comments)

talk to chuck: Lake Village, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:19 PM
        LAKE VILLAGE AIRPORT
Residents of this out-of-the way region aren't lacking in opportunities, according to Lake Village librarian Mary Kay Emmrich. "We do the same things everyone else does," she said. "We just have to travel farther to do them."
The four-square-mile Newton County area is unincorporated, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in recorded history.
According to an 1876 county retrospective by the Indiana County History Preservation Society, Newton County (where Lake Village is located) was inhabited through the mid 19th century by American Indians, wolves, swans, muskrats, beaver and fish. It also was dominated by a 36,000-acre lake.
The first settlement that … (1 comments)

talk to chuck: Wheeler, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:12 PM
Although there are many stories about the origin of the word "Hoosier," early Wheeler residents might be responsible for its common use. In the mid-1800s, one of the first frame buildings in the area became a well-known inn called the "Hoosier's Nest." The fame of Hoosier's Nest was captured in an 1866 poem by John Finley, which first called attention to the word "hoosier," to mean a resident of the state of Indiana.
"I'm told, in riding somewhere West, A stranger found a Hoosier's Nest -  In other words, a buckeye cabin, Just big enough to hold Queen Mab in."
Like many Midwestern … (3 comments)

talk to chuck: Shelby, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:07 PM
Hugging the north banks of the Kankakee River, this sleepy community that once drew Chicago businessmen and political types for plentiful hunting and fishing continues to draw those with a love of quiet, river life.
In 1886, William Shelby, president of the Lake Agricultural Co., laid out the area, which remains unincorporated and is the southernmost community in Lake County.
Dean White, of Whiteco Industries Inc., has his roots in Shelby, where his father, George White, and Joe KerKinderen began White Advertising. White, now a billionaire with business dealings in entertainment, hotel and real estate development and outdoor advertising, has said he has … (0 comments)

talk to chuck: Brunswick, Indiana - Back in Time ==== A Glance at History - 08/20/07 05:02 PM

For more than a century, the hamlet of Brunswick has been locked in time - its pristine landscape undisturbed by an influx of traffic, noise or major developments. And Donn Hylek, owner of Reichert's Tavern, one of only two businesses still operating in the community founded by German immigrants back in the mid-1800s, says he wouldn't have it any other way.
"This is the land time forgot, and frankly, I'm really happy with that," said Hylek, who claims his pub, centered at a single three-way stop at the intersection of 135th and Calumet avenues, is "a one-man band operation that caters to … (5 comments)
