In my area, Fremont County, there are somewhere between 13 and 15 State and Federal prisons. The number of prisons fluxuates with closures and new builds going on all the time, and doesn't include county facilities. The prisons are a major source of money for Fremont County : federal funds, state funds, employment, hotels, visitors, food, fuel. Employment in Fremont County is sometimes hard to come by if you don't work for the prisons, but at the same time families of guards and prisoners help support the local economy.
