quality of life: Selling Over 100 Homes a Year Almost Ruined My Life - 07/01/22 12:31 PM

Selling Over 100 Homes a Year Almost Ruined My Life I've talked about burn-out earlier this week, when I held my coaching webinar for Club Zebra members, and I was really touched by how many people emailed me to share their experiences with burnout.
When I was actively selling real estate, I sold way too many homes - and it literally almost ruined my life. One Christmas I really got a reality. I had missed a really important and very special Christmas dinner because I was working. I had let my family down because I was juggling 3 offers on … (8 comments)

quality of life: The Value of Vacations - 06/17/22 03:22 PM

The Value of Vacations I just got back from Greece and today, I'm back at Encore with my coaching clients. It's my favorite place to be, but I want to talk about the value of putting yourself first. Whether that is taking a special trip or going on a luxurious vacation or visiting a special person, you need that down-time away from your business to recharge and refresh.
A lot of us are passionate about our work - and we should be! However, I can tell you from personal experience that every time I take time off for vacation, I … (3 comments)

quality of life: 5 Tips for Real Estate Business Planning Success - 01/14/22 10:45 AM

5 Tips for Real Estate Business Planning Success
Business planning is top of mind for most business leaders this time of year. Lofty goals, dedication and drive are commonplace, but what is going to get you to a new level of success is not looking forward, it is looking backward and analyzing what has room for improvement.
In all my years of both selling real estate and now as a coach and trainer, there are common challenges that always doom a business plan and sabotages goals. Agents aren't consistent, they aren't leveraging their time, they don't track their money, … (9 comments)

quality of life: Are Time and Money Wasters Dragging Your Business Down? - 10/15/21 12:41 PM

Are Time and Money Wasters Dragging Your Business Down?
Have you ever had a leaky faucet? One that drip-drip-drips all day and night? Maybe one that you know should be fixed, needs to be fixed, but it isn't your biggest priority?
Then the water bill comes and you are shocked to learn that the little drip drip drip has resulted in an extra $200 bill and thousands of gallons of water. Then it becomes a big priority! The individual drips don't seem like a big deal, but the accumulation factor is huge.
Every business has leaks. Most real estate … (5 comments)

quality of life: Prioritizing Your Rocks - 10/12/21 10:58 AM

Prioritizing Your Rocks
You are likely familiar with the Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand story and demonstration.
No? Let me quickly explain:
Our demonstration includes a jar, rocks, pebbles, and sand.
The jar represents your life - the 24 hours that each of us has each and every day.
The rocks include the important stuff - spouse, family and friends, pets, hobbies, health, and the things that bring each of us joy.
The pebbles include the things that we have to focus on such as career, making sure your house is maintained, your financial life, etc. It even includes marketing … (11 comments)

quality of life: Don't Lose Sight of Your Quality of Life! - 05/21/21 10:21 AM

Don't Lose Sight of Your Quality of Life!
Anyone who knows me knows that I have a long-held belief that the first and the most important thing in your business is creating quality of life.
As our inventory-lean markets move faster and faster, I want to encourage all of you to think about your quality of life BEFORE you reach a stage where you are burned-out.
What do I mean by, "quality of life?"  If I had to define it simply it would be happiness that is created when there is a good balance between your personal and professional … (21 comments)

quality of life: The "E" Word - It might be costing you business! - 12/06/19 02:43 PM

The "E" Word - It might be costing you business!
"I had a bad year because of the market."
"My company didn't support me enough."
"There's too much competition in the area I work."
"I'm too new in the business to make a lot of money."
ENOUGH! Do you have "Excusitis"? It's a rampant disorder in the business world, characterized by frequent and habitual use of the "E" word - excuses.
I hear the above excuses - and MANY more - each and every day from real estate agents who are hiding behind limiting beliefs. And they're bright and talented agents who ultimately know better. But … (8 comments)

quality of life: Time and Money - 03/29/19 12:19 PM

Time and Money
Forgive me, I am feeling a little spicy today so this article is a little more blunt and to the point than usual! I have talked with a lot of stressed out agents this week who are doing too much themselves and not taking advantage of opportunities to leverage their time. If that sounds like you, this article is dedicated to you and your business!
AGENT: "Denise, can you help me make more money?"
MY RESPONSE: "Yes! But the first step is to help you make more time. You need that time to provide amazing service and … (10 comments)

quality of life: Simplify! - 02/16/18 02:39 PM

Simplify!
We just had a great two-day Safari workshop this week. What I love most about Safari is that no two are alike! Although the principles and foundations of each are the same, the application of those principles of each are driven by the unique needs of the agents in the room.
At this last Safari, there were agents with years of experience, some that were brand new, some whose business had stagnated and needed new energy, and even some agents that were overwhelmed with business and were trying to put together transactions on the breaks. Some were there … (14 comments)

quality of life: What are You Avoiding? - 02/12/18 01:19 PM

What are You Avoiding?
Do you ever get that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you think about that certain thing that you have been putting off? That thing you know you should do and would make you feel better to just get it off your plate? But the thought of tackling it is so overwhelming that you just push it back to the recesses of your mind and hope to forget about it?
If your thoughts went immediately to that thing, or things, that are weighing heavily on your mind, I am talking to you.
Maybe it's … (13 comments)

quality of life: A Day in The Life of a Realtor - Jack of All Trades - 10/05/17 04:44 PM

A Day in The Life of a Realtor - Jack of All Trades
The one incredible benefit of being a real estate agent is that you get to set your own schedule. Imagine the freedom to work when you want and to be able to sleep in when you want. Sounds good, right? That is a fantasy that many real estate agents like to believe but in reality, the business of selling real estate can overcome your life.
The challenge for so many of my clients has been how to juggle it all. Being a real estate agent in today's … (6 comments)

quality of life: What's Your Net? - 05/12/17 09:06 AM

What's Your Net?
Last week I talked about how important it is to truly being able to calculate how much money an agent makes per hour by dividing their gross commission income by total number of hours worked in a given year.
For example, if you make $100,000 gross commission and you work 40 hours per week for 52 weeks (2080 hours per year) you would make $48.08 per hour.
If you have yourself 4 weeks of vacation you would actually be giving yourself a raise because now you would only be working 1840 hours which would bump your … (3 comments)

quality of life: Your Work-Life Balance Check-Up - 09/02/16 03:51 AM

Your Work-Life Balance Check-Up
I would like to take you back to December 31, 2015. You might have been with friends celebrating the new year, traveling with family, or perhaps curled up with a cup of hot cocoa next to the fire, but wherever you were and whatever you were doing, you had probably been giving some thought to the upcoming year and how it was going to be different than previous years in terms of structure and in terms of protecting  your family time.
Fast forward to September 1, 2016; Labor Day weekend and the symbolic end of … (2 comments)

quality of life: The Empty Pipeline Syndrome - 09/25/15 03:05 AM

The Empty Pipeline Syndrome
We got a call a few weeks from a client who had gone from being on top of the world to having a disaster on her hands in a matter of a morning.
She had a number of deals that she was handling and they were all imploding for different reasons. Not only was she feeling awful for her clients, unable to repair the damage that was unfolding before her eyes, but she was also seeing the commission she had counted on, slipping through her fingers.
What was worse was that she had been focusing … (74 comments)

quality of life: The Fall Catch Up Plan - 09/18/15 04:37 AM

The Fall Catch Up Plan
Fall is a natural time to reflect back on your year and to give yourself a fresh start so you can finish out the year strong.
With kids going to school and our focus turning away from summer activities, this is a great time to examine your business and determine if you are on track - or if you need to make some adjustments as you head towards the end of the year.
First some evaluation:
1) Are You on Track Financially?
This is the easiest thing to evaluate but the one thing that causes … (2 comments)

quality of life: "To Do" Overload - 05/08/15 04:20 AM

"To Do" Overload
If you made a list of "to do" items right now in your business, how would you feel? Confident that you had a handle on most of them? Completely overwhelmed by the deficiencies in your business? Or completely indifferent because you weren't planning on tackling them anyway?
The agents I begin to work with are often in that second category - completely overwhelmed by their "to do" list which consists of not only the things they have to get done for their clients, but also all the systems and tools they want to develop to streamline … (1 comments)

quality of life: The Link Between Personal Space & Business Success - 01/23/15 05:10 AM

The Link Between Personal Space & Business Success
Organization of any kind comes easy to some and not so easy to others. Most real estate agents are juggling many different clients at one time and find it hard to think about organizing anything other than their time to manage their clients.
But when you calculate the amount of time that is wasted or lost due to not only a disorganized office or inefficient filing system, but also possibly your closet or bathroom drawers, you might want to rethink how disorganization in both your personal space and office space can affect … (5 comments)

quality of life: Rethinking Vacation Coverage - 05/22/14 07:33 AM

Rethinking Vacation Coverage
With the summer months almost upon us, I hope you have planned some time off to have fun in the sun. However, with vacation and time off comes the worry about what will happen with your business while you are away. Or perhaps you wind up promising to give away half your commission for the covering agent but wind up coming home to 95% of the work! This summer, I encourage you rethink how you partner with the agent(s) who cover your business and find a solution that is more reflective of the work that is … (0 comments)

Let Quality of Life Be Your Guide in 2013... and Beyond
Anyone who knows me knows that I have a long-held belief that the first, and the most important thing in your business, is creating quality of life.
As we wind down 2012 and head in to 2013 I want to encourage all of you to think about your quality of life.

quality of life: Five Questions to Ask Yourself About Time Off - 06/22/12 03:25 AM
Five Questions to Ask Yourself About Time Off
It's that time of year. School's out, the weather is getting warmer, and many real estate agents start dreaming about... vacation!
Unfortunately, for many of them it's just that - a dream.
I'm a huge believer in the concept of "quality of life," or "work/life balance." Because of that I believe regular time off is an absolute must for real estate agents - scheduled time off each week, and a longer period for extended vacations at least once each year.
I can already hear you wailing in the corner! And I know you're saying … (3 comments)
