home staging: HGTV's Matthew Finlason - His Latest Group of Advanced Home Stager Graduates - Toronto - 10/14/11 06:20 AM
I'm excited to share with everyone that I'm part of the latest group of graduates from Matthew Finlason's Intensive 2-Day Advanced Design & Marketing Course for Home Stagers.  Matthew brought his bag of tricks and a wealth of information to Toronto recently.  I was thrilled to be one of the few in attendance.  The course is kept to a minimum number of students to allow for special attention to each participant's needs.
Ready to bring my business to the next level, I've already started implementing some of what I've learned to make Dezigner Digz something truly special.
I love to share and write about what I … (14 comments)

home staging: Have You 'Googled' Your Name Lately? You Might Be Surprised By What You Find. - 03/23/11 12:50 PM
How often do you 'Google' yourself or your company name?  If you haven't checked for a while, here's your friendly reminder to take a few moments to do so.  Who knows what you'll find!
I try to make it a habit to check on a monthly basis, but as life gets in the way, that doesn't always happen.  In the past when I've checked, of course my website comes up as well as all of the social media sites that I belong to.  Many times I'll even come across articles that I've written for REALTOR® Magazine that have been posted by REALTORS® across the U.S. and … (96 comments)

home staging: REALTOR® Magazine - My Latest Article: What To Look For When Choosing a Home Stager - 09/23/10 07:52 AM

Last year I wrote an article for my Active Rain blog that provided information on things to look for when choosing a Home Stager to work with.  It actually got featured on AR at the time.  It's such an important topic, that I felt it was time for the subject to be addressed again.  That's why recently, I submitted the article to REALTOR® Magazine for their blog Styled, Staged & Sold.
You can read the article here: What To Look For When Choosing a Home Stager.  I hope you find it helpful if you're thinking about adding the services of a Home Stager to your marketing program.  If you're … (14 comments)

home staging: HGTV's SELLING NEW YORK - What Were Your Thoughts? - 09/10/10 05:54 AM
The first episode of HGTV's Selling New York debuted in Canada Wednesday night.  I've been watching the trailers for it over the last couple of weeks, so I was really stoked to check it out.  I can't get enough of HGTV.
The show centres around two competing New York City real estate firms.  The daily "goings-on" of their brokers are followed as they work the real estate industry.  I get the impression from the first episode anyway, that the two firms chosen couldn't be any more different from one another in how they operate.  They're like night and day.  I guess that was a conscious choice in order to … (11 comments)

home staging: A Staging Job Close To My Heart - Part 1: The Garage Sale - 06/06/10 03:54 AM

If you're just joining me, you may want to go back to The Introduction of this series of blog posts so that this makes more sense to you (it's a quick read).
Over the course of the next few blog posts, I'll be writing and posting pictures about the preparation of my In-laws' home for sale from start to shocking outcome.  I'll also talk a bit about what it's like to be on the other side of the fence during this difficult time.  It's very different from when you are coming in as an unbiased stager with no connection to the … (14 comments)

I had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew last year and got some behind-the-scenes details on the show.  For those who may have missed the interview, here is a link to it:

home staging: 'Twas The Night Before Staging - 12/18/08 11:02 AM
‘Twas the night before staging and all through my head,
danced visions of accessories in my favourite red.
The only one awake, just me and my notions,
whirling round my head, stirring up emotions.
If only I could sleep, for the alarm will soon ring.
But I'm wondering what tomorrow will bring.
On staging eve, a sleepless night.
I want to make sure the job's done just right.

The alarm goes off, now staging day is here.
Will I be too tired? Of course not - never fear.

home staging: Ontario RESA/SIF Home Stagers Roundtable - Colleagues Not Competitors - A Great Day! - 11/29/08 10:31 AM
I'm just home from today's roundtable meeting which was open to all home stagers across Ontario.  I wanted to write about it while I was still so pumped up. [A big thank you to Karen Hubert who car pooled with me.  She had to put up with my talking the whole way home ;-).]
There were 26 attendees registered for the event.  Although not everyone was able to make it, we ended up with 21 home stagers in attendance.  Everyone had such a good time sharing information and chatting about our common passion - home staging.  The main thing that I took away from today was the unanimous agreement that we're colleagues, not … (17 comments)

home staging: The Stagers - Episode #10 Recap: Mr. Finlason in the Study With a Peacock Feather - 09/11/08 09:58 AM

Well, I have to say that I have been really looking forward to this episode.  This was the only pairing of Matthew and Bridget for a staging project this season.  I'm sure a lot of feathers were ruffled off-camera but things went well in spite of it.
The home in need of some TLC this time around was built in the 1930's and was approximately 5,000 square feet in size.  The asking price for this one was a mere $2,988,000 (not outrageous I suppose by Vancouver standards).  The team had 5 days to work their miracles.

home staging: The Stagers - Episode 8 - The Loft - My Thoughts (For What They're Worth) - 08/27/08 04:23 AM

Has a week gone by already?  It only seems like a few days ago when I sat down to see the last episode.
Matthew was back in the driver's seat, along with the return of his friend Sara, who helped him out on a previous episode.
This time around, Matthew was given the assignment of staging a 1,000 sq. ft. loft that apparently was "right down his bowling alley".  The listing price for this property was $499,000 and the team had 4 days to pull off the transformation before the open house.
The homeowner was out of town, so … (21 comments)

home staging: STAGED and SOLD in 9 DAYS - Burlington's Dezigner Digz Home Staging Success Story - 07/24/08 01:27 PM
The savvy owner of this home realized the value that home staging can bring to the table when selling a property.  That's why he decided to have his property staged prior to listing it.
The result:  The property SOLD IN 9 DAYS!!!  Fabulous statistics, especially during a slight market downturn.
Home staging shouldn't be considered an added expense.  Think of it as an effective marketing tool that can help attract buyers and sell your home faster than a comparable property.  In a slower real estate market, it becomes even more important to make your property stand out from the competition.
Want to see the difference home staging can make?  See some of the … (17 comments)

home staging: HGTV's The Stagers - Episode 4 - "A Comfortable, Stylin' Home" - 07/22/08 03:24 PM

With all of the hype surrounding HGTV's newest show The Stagers, I couldn't wait to watch Episode 4.  As a Professional Home Stager, I guess I am more critical of some of the shows that are out there on T.V.,  especially those that really don't portray what we do in an accurate way.
Episodes 1 to 3 have not disappointed (although I thought Episode 2 became more about design rather than staging).
Did Episode 4 find its mark?  At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I'd say the city got a little brighter last night. Wondering why?

home staging: The Stagers - Episode 3 Review - There's Still Hope! - 07/16/08 01:16 AM
I was really pumped to watch The Stagers third episode last night, even though I was disappointed in episode two.
The property chosen was an 1,100 square foot bungalow that had been sitting on the market for 3 months with no bites.  The listing price was $765,000, $720,000, $699,000 (yes, 2 previous price reductions).  Too bad the homeowners hadn't called in a Stager sooner.
This episode featured a mother and daughter staging team.  They were very polite and tactful with the homeowners which I was really glad to see.  Some of the shows on TV portray us as being rude and insulting to … (16 comments)
