Charity Island cruise held to help foster tourism ideas
A group of area business people set off from the East Tawas State Dock last Friday for Charity Island. The 17 mile trip, which featured a tour of the historic Charity Island Lighthouse and lunch, wasn't all pleasure though, important tourism networking was taking place.
The excursion was hosted by the Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan State University Extension and was created to explore Lake Huron ecotourism opportunities.
It was part of a continuing effort by area agencies to utilize Tawas Bay, Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron to boost tourism that is … (0 comments)

The Oconto aground off Charity Island, December 1885
The Oconto left Oscoda on 12/04/1885 with 22 passengers and 25 crew-members on what was supposed to be a short trip to Alpena. About an hour after they got underway a winter storm descended on Lake Huron and engulfed the Oconto and its crew in a blinding gale snowstorm.

The island was offered for sale in 1987 for $750,000. 10 years later, in 1997, more than 80% of the island was acquired by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an addition to the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge … (0 comments)

If you have ever spent time around AuGres or East Tawas Michigan, then you've heard of the Charity Islands. As a kid, my grandfather used to tell me stories about how the indians used the island for collecting flint to make tools and for fishing the shallow water between the 2 islands.
So when I heard about Charity Island Excursions I signed up for their monthly newsletter. The March issue talks about "Shirley Ann" departing from East Tawas State Dock this summer, dinner cruises, wildflowers of the islands, bird watching, homemade corn chowder and french bread at the lighthouse.
