Lady Bird Lake is the center of all things Austin during the year but especially in the summertime. "Bat Watching" is a favorite pass time and excursions run non-stop each night with throngs of people lining Congress Avenue Bridge (Officially called the Ann W. Richard Congress Bridge) in hopes of seeing swarms of bats flying out from under the arches of the bridge to forge for food. Bat season is from mid March to early November. Austin is the home of the largest urban bat colony in North America. Believe it or not the colony is estimated to be 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats.
