keep austin weird: Lady Bird Lake ~The Austin Hub for Summertime fun! - 07/22/19 12:35 PM
Lady Bird Lake is the center of all things Austin during the year but especially in the summertime. "Bat Watching" is a favorite pass time and excursions run non-stop each night with throngs of people lining Congress Avenue Bridge (Officially called the Ann W. Richard  Congress Bridge) in hopes of seeing swarms of bats flying out from under the arches of the bridge to forge for food. Bat season is from mid March to early November. Austin is the home of the largest urban bat colony in North America. Believe it or not the colony is estimated to be 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats.

keep austin weird: Saturday Shots ~ It's That Time of Year ~ Packing Rogue Balls - 01/06/18 05:11 AM
In Austin we have a fun rogue tradition (one that ties to our slogan "Keep Austin Weird")..... we like to decorate trees and bushes along our roadsides during the holiday season. As people drive by they honk and yell "Merry Christmas" to families decorating the trees (there are a lot to choose from).
This year Handsome Hudson and Beautiful Beckett helped decorate 2 bushes in the entrance to the section of Canyon Creek we live in. Of course we always take them down after New Years! Our tub of rogue balls are packed and ready to be stored until next December!

keep austin weird: Austin Weirdness #6 ~ The Little Longhorn Saloon ~ Chicken Shit Bingo - 07/07/16 07:35 AM
Austin always favored the Honky-tonk country music scene until our whole music picture changed to accommodate the new bands offering sights and sounds from all over the world!
For more than 2 decades The Little Longhorn Saloon (also known as Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon) serves as the center for another Austin Weirdism. Ginny’s is a friendly, small, rustic Austin beer joint for great classic Texas music in Central Austin. Places like this are disappearing quickly in our city but Ginny’s for the time being is still going strong and draws 1,000’s of Little Longhorn fans from all over the world! keep austin weird: Austin Weirdness #5 ~ Bats Under the Congress Ave Bridge - 06/27/16 07:37 AM
Believe it or not there are 1.5 million bats (the world’s largest urban bat colony) that fly out every summer night from under the Congress Avenue Bridge (officially the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge). They are a sight to behold! Thousands of residents and visitors flock to view the bats spiraling into the summer skies!
The Congress Avenue Bridge was reconstructed in 1980. The engineers had no clue the new crevices underneath the bridge would make the perfect bat roost even though bats had lived there for years. Many residents reacted in panic and ignorance by petitioning to have the bat … (21 comments)

keep austin weird: Why Millennials are attracted to Austin’s lifestyle - 06/21/16 07:29 AM
We read articles every day about why Millennials are different from other generations. Who are these people? Most all Demographers lump them in the 18-34 age group and have now surpassed the Baby Boomers (ages 51-69) in numbers.
Austin is attracting large numbers of Millennials moving here through job creation from companies like Google, Apple, Oracle, National Instruments and so many more! The University of Texas and Austin Community College attracts Millennials and UT Dell Med is opening with its first set of 50 students! Austin is diversified with so many sectors needing employees. keep austin weird: Austin Weirdness #1~ The Cathedral of Junk - 05/26/16 04:23 AM
Our “Keep Austin Weird”  blueprint is one many cities are trying to follow and with good reason. Our drive to support local business, artists and retain our “Texas Pride” is what is luring companies and their employees to live and work in an environment that cares about its residents.
Austinities love our slogan “Keep Austin Weird” and its has been ingrained in our DNA even being found in the glossary of terms of the city’s comprehensive plan from 4 years ago! The official document defines the word “strikingly odd” or “unusual.”
I wrote about Austin’s culture in my post on my blog but … (32 comments)

Graffiti Park at Castle Hills or the Hope Outdoor Gallery
In Austin our motto is “Keep Austin Weird!”  Graffiti Park at Castle Hills or the official name HOPE Outdoor Gallery fits perfectly in this mantra. Graffiti artists have to take risks when applying their craft illegally but there is one well- known place in Austin where graffiti is legal!
The park is not a public City of Austin Park, its private property owned by the Castle Hill Partners (an investment firm that operates out of the castle that sits on West 11th Street above the gallery). Castle Hill Partners has no … (13 comments)
