christmas: Holiday Package Safety - 11/18/23 07:50 AM
Well, here we are at the beginning of the Holiday Season. Thanksgiving is this coming Thursday 23 November. Then 1 month later it's Christmas.

Recently we've seen uncontrolled theft of retail stores by roving bands of marauders. NOW, that has begun to move to delivery vehicles. Just this week our local Police Dept issued guidance to help prevent package theft.

Have a very Happy and safe Thanksgiving and Holiday season

christmas: The Holidays - 12/24/22 10:06 AM
I want to take this time to wish Active Rain and its members a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I also want to remind us to remember all military members who are away from home and may even be on a war front.
In 1914 there is a story of a Christmas Truce. It was not an official truce but an impromptu truce concocted by English, French, & German troops who found themselves in trenches on the French Front. The story goes as follows.
These are men, who, otherwise, could have become friends if not for war. The truce shows the spiritual power … (16 comments)

christmas: What a Night... - 12/08/22 09:56 AM
It was a perfect early December early evening on 4 December 2022 when two (2) annual events took place in our Town of Georgetown, Massachusetts. The first is the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Drive and Santa Tour hosted by the Georgetown, MA Fire Department.

Here's a little background. In the mid-1990s the Department brought back the tradition where Santa Claus, drives around town spreading cheer and joy while seated on one of the firetrucks. In 2000 they added the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. During these 22 years over 70,000 new unwrapped toys have been donated by the citizens … (20 comments)

christmas: Guess What? - 12/26/21 06:28 AM
It SNOWED last night! Just a couple of inches. Since yesterday was freezing rain and the roads were treacherous (Our town's sander truck even slid off the road) we asked our expected guests if they could come today. Pam & I had a very relaxing day and, believe it or not...in the 48 years we've known each other this is the FIRST Christmas it's been just the two of us.
Here we are marching right along to the New Year 2022. It's eye-opening to realize that just 22 years ago it was Y2K and everyone was freaking out about computers crashing AND … (32 comments)

christmas: The Day Before... - 12/24/21 07:35 AM
It's the day before Christmas 2021. A very special time of the year for me as my faith runs very deep. It's also a time of reflection. What did I consider important that wasn't and what did I think was unimportant that actually was important? Did my hands and actions reflect my faith?
BUT, tomorrow is Christmas and a time of celebration. "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life".
We each have access to this free gift. The only thing required is to … (26 comments)

christmas: A Christmas Story for Thanksgiving... - 11/24/20 10:13 AM
Let me disclose, upfront, I saw this shared story posted on Facebook. It really moved me and reminded me of how blessed we are as a Nation and a People. No matter how bad things seem we must always remember our American roots and what we are all about.
SO, this is a Christmas story for Thanksgiving. It's a longish read BUT well worth it.

It was Christmas Eve 1942. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn't been enough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted for … (12 comments)

christmas: The King Has Been Born!! - 12/24/19 07:30 AM
Good Morning & MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!
Today we celebrate the birth of the King of kings and Lord of lords. God did not send His Son to judge the world but to save it through Him.
The birth of a Savior was prophesied roughly 700 years prior to Jesus' birth, by the prophet Isaiah. you can find the verse in Isaiah 7:14
Isaiah 7:14 English Standard Version (ESV)14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
When I was young Christmas had a whole different meaning and importance than it does today. As a … (16 comments)

christmas: The Holiday and Christmas Season... - 12/02/19 01:28 PM
...Has started. I wrote this post last evening during our 2+ day 1st snow of the year. As an elected official of the Town we, the Board of Selectmen, had formed a Holiday Committee in 2018. On Monday 1 December the Town turned out for our annual Holiday Lighting Festival. There's a DJ spinning popular Christmas/Holiday tunes, the local Kiwanis Club popped popcorn, both Dunkin Donut and HoneyDew Donut provided hot coffee, hot chocolate & donuts, a couple of the area pizza shops even provided pizza, & the Georgetown Middle High School Choir performed traditional Hannukah and Christmas selections.
Included in the … (10 comments)

christmas: Tonight is the Night!! - 12/24/18 08:06 AM
Tonight is the night of our dear Savior's birth. Last minute preparations are being made. For me, 1 showing today then wrap gifts, then off to make visits and partake in holiday cheer. Tonight is our Christmas Eve church service at Byfield Parish Church then lickety-split to ByFaith Fellowship Church where our youngest son attends.
For the Christian world, Christmas is a most holy time. A child was born. The only Real Estate available for his birth was in a manger, a place where animals bedded down. His name was called Emmanuel meaning "God with us". He had come to save the world not judge it. This … (16 comments)

christmas: An Important Celebration... - 12/25/17 04:54 AM

Pam & I want to wish each of you in the Active Rain community a Blessed and Merry Christmas.  Today, the Christian world celebrates the birth of its long-awaited King, Jesus, the Christ. He is a gift from God to each of us that will reach out for it.

christmas: Christmas Memory - 12/08/17 05:17 AM
This is my Christmas memory submission to the December contest offered by Kathy Streib.
Aside from Pam & my first Christmas as a married couple, I would say the next big Christmas memory we have is when our first son was born. Benjamin Michael Dawes was born on December 16, 1977.
It was a nerve-wracking day for both Pam and me as first-time parents. We didn't know whether we were having a boy or girl Soooo, you know what I looked for first...lol. Then I felt big a sense of relief, Phew, it was a boy. My mother & father wanted a grandson. None of my … (12 comments)

christmas: Yet Another Reminder... - 11/03/17 08:28 PM
It's that time of year again! And everyone will be reminding us about it and what we need to be doing. YUP Christmas is right around the corner! By my count, there are 52 days left til Christmas. The stores have Christmas music playing and all the Christmas junk is already displayed.

But wait a minute, the turkey's right. Back off Santa! Thanksgiving is first! But, methinks the turkey will be singing a different tune soon enough.

Hold your horses there, turkey! First, I think you're forgetting our veterans. It's important that we remember our Veterans on November 11th. Be sure and pick up a poppy from … (24 comments)

christmas: The Day That Holds Time Together. - 12/25/16 06:10 AM
It's Christmas Day,
The poet, Alexander Smith is quoted "
"Christmas is the day that holds all time together." It couldn't be a truer statement. The Creator of ALL things left His throne, home and everything He knew and enjoyed to be born of a woman, to be born under the Law of God and subject to it.  Galatians 4:4-7 explains it best
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit … (10 comments)

christmas: Behold... - 12/24/16 01:18 PM
Jesus’ Birth in BethlehemIn those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirin′i-us was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son … (2 comments)

christmas: Are You Ready... - 12/09/14 10:35 PM

...to embrace Christmas? I find it a challenging season, for many reasons. There are parties and more parties. There are Christmas pagents at "some" schools and many churches. The other day I was driving through Topsfield, MA in the early evening and saw a choral group on the Town Hall stairs singing carols while the audience was huddled together with umbrellas over their heads. Then there's shopping [I'm doing most of mine online]. We still need to pick out a tree, decorate it etc, etc, etc.
What I'm trying to say is that it seems  there is more demand … (10 comments)
