poppy: Veterans - 11/05/23 03:54 PM
This past Saturday, 4 November our local American Legion Post #211 held their annual Veteran's Day Poppy Drive. For those who do not know the significance of the Poppy here's a brief explanation from Post #211. I took this from the flyer we put together as a handout to the folks and kids who stopped by. We invite all to participate in Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, and Veteran's Day on 11 November. The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour.

poppy: Today is National Poppy Day - 05/24/19 05:17 AM
Wear a Poppy this weekend.
Today is National Poppy Day. Many don't know the story of the Poppy and how it came about. Here's the story straight from the American Legion.
The Poppy Story
After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John … (8 comments)

poppy: Veterans & The Poppy - 11/09/18 03:11 PM
The red Poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields.” On September 27, 1920, the Poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war.
Today our Georgetown Ameican Legion Post #211 will hold our annual Veteran's Day Poppy Drive.

The Poppy Story
From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the memory of a barren landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood that had soaked the soil. By that miracle of nature, the spirit of their lost comrades lived on.

poppy: Do you Have Your Poppy? - 11/09/17 01:07 PM
Ever since watching the Ken Burns documentary of Vietnam many memories have come flooding back. Just this year I met a veteran, a Marine, who spent 3 tours in Vietnam. He lived homeless under a dumpster when he was found by another veteran who took him in and got him help at the VA. You see this man was suffering from a traumatic brain injury. He no longer had any memory of life before he arrived in Vietnam. Today this veteran is living as normal a life as he can. He has a family and dedicates his life to helping veterans because someone cared … (12 comments)

poppy: Why Wear a Poppy? - 11/03/17 07:42 PM
For the Georgetown Rene J. Gagnon American Legion Post #211 the Saturday before (Remembrance Day), now known as Veteran's Day, is when we have our semi-annual Poppy Drive.
The Poppy Drive funds help fund American Legion programs, the Soldiers Home, and veteran services. It also reminds people of the importance of remembering those that have served and died.
There's an old Jewish proverb that goes like this; "The only truly dead are those who have been forgotten."
Here's a short video about the Poppy and why we should all wear one during Veterans Month.
